    Bluetooth is just plain not ubiquitous (i love that word) in the U.S.. Bluetooth that doesn't have a bunch of transmission modes disabled is even less so.

    So, therefore, since it never took off in the U.S.. it never took off.

    Every now and then I look for the "TOOTHING!" forum that sort of started the whole thing.. guy keeps getting shut down, everywhere he hosts...

    Really, I was kidding about the whole OS/2 thing, I understand that business wise, it no longer makes sense to support OS/2, and that the promise of continuing OS/2 development kind of came to a natural death when IBM dumped us all :(

    yeah.. sigh.. i've been advocating this for years and years and years.. but.. everyone i knew at ibm is long gone.. i was pretty involved with the Os/2 V4 beta test people.. but I think they are all elsewhere now.

    I'm not sure what SOX does, exactly, not into that magnitude of stuff.. but.. my retail company has been making all sorts of uncharacteristic declarations, stating "we need to do this now, because of sarbanes oxley" with no other explanation. *shrug* things have been improving drastically around here, i think.

    Well, I've toyed with the idea of picking up eComStation, but I can't really see any particularly good reason why -- it's desktop is still way ahead of anything that's on the market today, free, gnu, or otherwise.. but there's still the fact that there's virtually no software.

    It's a huge improvement over the existing solutions, and it SHOULD serve as a replacement for apt, yum, etc.

    However, it still does not appear to address the main problem:

    The package should only know what type of thing a file is. The distribution should determine where every type of thing should go.

    If it wasn't for the fact that I would have to spend a couple of entire days fixing a different distribution if i install it, every day I use my Debian box, is every day that I get more and more pissed off about how stupid it is.

    apt-get sounded great, but if you don't use "unstable" or newer, you have basically unusable software, if you need to keep up to date on anything. And the package dependencies are a living farking hell. I love "apt-get install *someprogram*" and it tells me it needs to download 300MB of completely unrelated junk to make something work.

    It's a ".com".. Being "celebrity" status, she therefore would have more of a claim over it than someone else with the same name.

    If we go by the traditional rules, though, she should be required to have a .org or perhaps a .gov rather than a .com. I farking HATE when I see orgs with .coms and businesses with .orgs or .nets. Drives me NUTS. Makes me want to go Columbine.

    You're really not going to get a whole wonderful performance out of a Component video cable, if that's the best connection you've got for HDTV. If you use Monster, you WILL get a difference. But, Component connections only give you the lowest common denominator of HDTV broadcasts.

    Do you not have DVI or HDMI connectors?

    Seriously:
    Upgrading my home theater to Monster cables, and especially monster POWER strips.. made a HUGE difference in audio and video quality.

    Also, Monster equipment has a lifetime warranty.

    What morons would donate half their settlement back to the company that gave it to them, even if they do get it as a tax write off?

    If you need the tax writeoff, you can donate it somewhere else. The SAE, being part of the automotive conglomerate, tried to fuck these developers, they got busted, and the developers just rolled over and LET THE SAE fuck them.

    Some charitable good will, to say "oh, we caught you this time, now you'd better be more careful stealing other people's shit"???

    Here I thought code people were generally the smarter of the bunch... *wtf*

    If it's better than IE6, the IE users won't care, and won't switch.

    Then again, the average person, no matter how much slashdot would like to think, doesn't care anyway.

    That said, the traffic on my website (mostly generated from fark and slashdot) is close to 35% firefox, 25% opera, and the rest IE and others.

    Actually, Linux does not automatically kill "YOUR program" it automatically kills "*A* program" .. so, running a Linux system out of ram is good enough to cause all kinds of havoc, once you are on the inside.

    Many systems are set to NOT overcommit their memory, and if I'm not mistaken ,that is actually expected behavior for larger systems, is that overcommit is turned off. (I could be wrong, it's been a long time since I had dealings with bigger systems)

    Also, the malloc(1) -should- peg the CPU at maximum, and fairly well stop virtually every other program in the system. "real" forms of multitasking just don't work very well when you put an extremely TINY call to repeat that much.
    It could loop millions of times before any other process gets its hands on the CPU.

    From someone who's been running debian on his box for about 2 years now, and every day hating it more and more....

    If you don't have your apt-get set to automatically update you to everything in 'unstable' and 'experimental', your system is automatically unusably out of date.

    At least for a personal box.

    Debian stable should be used for servers.
    Debian shouldn't be used for anything else.

    Microsoft is a business.
    Microsoft is there to make money.
    Odds are pretty good that if there were a sustainable business (ie, people who actually want them to continue to support VB6 ---and--- would pay them to do so) that Microsoft would be all over that. Right?
