I disagree with you disagreeing completely. I have never read any documentation or books or anything on networking, and have built several OS/2 and Windows networks (some homogenuous, some with both) that shared everything perfectly, because it was all relatively easy to figure out what to do.

I've also built Linux networks, as well. But, I've never gotten samba to work to share with windows and os/2. I've tried, but i'm not even going into the freakin manuals. I'll just FTP transfer all the files, because it's a hell of a lot easier than finding the documentation that everyone says is worse than none, for samba.

Yes, I've read lots of other manuals.. but if a task can be done in Windows, OS/2, and several other OS's, without knowing anything about that task beforehand, in under ten minutes.. why does it take weeks for people to figure it out in Linux?

I wanted to suggest that they go check out Knoppix. Just to try it out.

Unfortunatly, I found that all of the websites that i could find that have to do with Knoppix are either (a) complete garbage, or (b) geared towards people who already know what, why, and how.

Knoppix could be used quite readily to show people what they are missing out on. Anyone know of any sites that explain to COMPLETE NEWBIES what, why, and how? ie, Knoppix for Dummies!

It took me another two weeks tweaking spam-assassin's kill rate down to about a 50% accuracy, and now i actually receive all my emails.)

  4. my reasons on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 1

Basically, all I need is a web browser that functions, an email client, instant messengers, and chat programs. That's all I really do with my computer. (and some music playing)

One reason to stay on Linux, is that I can't seem to get Windows to support my computer's SCSI controller.

One reason to get rid of Linux, would be because it's virtually freaking impossible to get all of this working in Mozilla AND Opera for Linux, all at once: Java, Multimedia Plugins, Flash/Shockwave. And then KEEP it all working, as you upgrade versions of Mozilla/Opera.

On my roommate's Windows computer, I can stay up-to-date on web browsers, without having to re-install all my plugins, or risk breaking them badly. Mozilla/Opera do not lock up regularly under the Windows platform. (IE, however, is a supreme piece of garbage)

I could play games if I were using Windows. I might care about that if I had hardware that was actually capable of PLAYING the latest games.. but the fastest puter in the house is a 1.1GHz and doesn't have 3Dhardware worth talking about. My machine is a 600MHz P3 with a Radeon 7000 PCI. Not exactly a power house. It plays Quake 3 ok, but that's about the extent of it's power. (Return to CW didn't run at all on it, and barely ran on the 1.1GHz machine)

Of course, my router computer uses Linux. And before it used Linux, it used OS/2. And it did the exact same things that it did with OS/2 that it does with Linux.. except on Linux, it can be booted from floppy, and run without the hard drive (without the additional services i have it running, such as email/web/database). No compelling reason to keep it with Linux, except that there's no compelling reason to go back to OS/2, and Windows just plain wouldn't cut it.

(i've never spent more than a day figuring out the basics of an operating system only to get frustrated and give up.. except with Be.)

So, why couldn't the kernel be mated to a completely different set of software?

Then, sometime in the Win95 or Win98 era, Microsoft changed it to the less-intuitive and less-standard Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V.

And Microsoft was a member of the body of people/organizations that made Ctrl-Insert and Shift-Insert the standard.. then went and trashed it...

This is the CUA92 user interface universal standard, by the way.. and i'm a bit busy right now to do a google search for it, but I'm sure anyone interested could find it..

So, our internet service was still on, and our tv was off. Go outside, look at the connection on the satellite grounding block.. it's got a block thing on it, with an attached "Please contact Comcast to restore service" tag.

We called Comcast, explained to them that they'd best be out there within approximately 15 minutes to restore the satellite connection they disconnected. When that failed, we also contacted DirecTV.. DTV was VERY pissed off, and spent quite a while getting all the details from us.. and they also suggested we contact the FCC.. which we did. We did get COmcast out there about 3 hours after all this was done.

on my server, if i run several of the same report (for different date ranges, for example) back to back, then after i think 12 of them, the server just plain refuses to generate any more of that type of report. i called and wanted to report this, and they wouldn't report it as a bug, they'd just give me the reset password.
