  1. Re:Clock and firmware on Apple iPod Update Increases Battery Life · · Score: 3, Interesting
I just updated my 5GB to 1.2.6 and the only strange thing that I noticed was that the clock was frozen at 12:00:00 1Jan 2002. If you manually adjust the date and time it starts running normally. I haven't found a way to turn it off again, short of running an iPod restore.

Could this be a power-saving feature? Disabling the clock until the user actually decides to start using it? (I know I never do, so it wouldn't be a big loss and the extra run time would be great)

I just purchased a iPod to replace my Minidisc player. Xplay works pretty well and allows me to manage the music files from a Windows box.

The Minidisc's big advantage is the small size of the players (man, those things are TINY!) and relatively high storage capacity (2.5 hours of pretty good quality with MDLP capable models). However, you're still stuck with recording music in real-time and that was becoming a bit of a pain because I change playlists pretty often.

The 5GB iPod stores somewhere between 40 and 80 hours of music and although you can't create new playllists on the fly (you must create the playlist on your PC/Mac instead) music uploading/downloading is far faster than the Minidisc and it has a great user interface. The battery life isn't too great (6 hours maybe?) but it charges whenever you plug it in and only takes an hour or so to get to full charge from 0%, so how bad can that be?

I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy IX and hope to have that finished by the time FF X comes out at the end of the year. Recent news about the Resident Evil movie has me thinking that I should give a few of those titles a try as well.

My local crack-dealer^H^H^H^H^H^H^H game store also has used Dreamcasts... perfect for some Crazy Taxi and Shenmue huh? I worry that this whole "console" thing is an addiction that grows. eeeeeeek.

The other PC and Playstation games that I had lying around (including FF9, Max Payne & Metal Gear Solid 2) just sat around, unplayed until I had finished ICO (twice!). What's even more amazing is that this is supposedly the first game by a internal Sony team...

    Pros:
    - the visuals and environmental sounds are simply stunning, you'll find yourself running around just taking it all in
    - the puzzles aren't TOO hard, but contain enough variety to keep you interested
    - did I mention how amazing the visuals were?
    - game design that uses the absolute minimum amount of characters, music and speech to tell a completely engrossing story

    Cons:
    - the game is very short, maybe 9 hours for my first run through and definitely less than 4 hours from start to finish once you know what you're doing
    - almost zero replayability, all of the puzzle locations and solutions are the same, every time through (although, I still feel that I got my money's worth)

  16. The Microsoft KB sayeth on Why Does IIS Answer HTTP Requests w/ NetBIOS Reply? · · Score: 4
I found this interesting article (id: Q245574) that may apply.

Evidently you can configure IIS to do reverse DNS lookups (which are disabled, by default) but it adds a special Microsoft-flavoured twist. If the standard reverse lookup fails, it tries to retrieve a name from the remote client using NetBIOS.

Could this be the source of your UDP requests? You can try connecting to the servers in question from a machine with working Reverse DNS entries to see if it still happens (according to the article, it should not).

    -------------------------

By default, performing a Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_HOST") in ASP returns a null value, which causes Internet Information Server (IIS) to return the value of REMOTE_ADDR, the IP address of the client. This is by design to increase performance for Web hosting. However, by changing a setting in the metabase, IIS performs a reverse DNS lookup and returns the host name of the client connecting.

With the metabase setting enabled, every request for the REMOTE_HOST server variable causes IIS to pass a name resolution request off to the operating system, which attempts to execute a reverse DNS lookup. If the reverse DNS lookup fails to return the host name, the operating system then attempts name resolution using NetBIOS. If NetBIOS resolution fails an empty value is returned to IIS, which returns the REMOTE_ADDR value (client's IP address) to the original REMOTE_HOST request.
