At one time, this was true. There was a time when all sampling was done "by hand". This is no longer true, and has not been true for quite some time, thanks to the advancement of technology. From 2002 to 2006 I worked for a company that was directly funded by ASCAP. We sampled dozens of stations in at least the 110 Media Markets across the US, as well as some international and online stations. Using as many as 5 servers per market we were tracking a minimum of 10 stations per server. Using digital fingerprint technology we reached nearly 100% detection rate of which *version* of which song was being played on a station. That company no longer exists, but the methods(and similar technologies) live on. This should cover something close to 50% of stations residing in the 302 US Media Markets.

Why don't you let players who want to try this out and learn it and test it for you and let people who have adapted to the old system continue to play on those servers until all the bugs are worked out?

The PS2 I think did the most to accomodate size and placement, it has a stand, when its sitting down its flat, the discs are not top loading. However the shape is far too small to make it stackable in any way, unless its at the top of your unit or sitting between two larger anchored units. This has always been an issue with me as I like to have my tv, consoles, record player, reciever, dvd player, and tape player hooked up as one system and the consoles are always harder to situate than even the clunky top loading record player.

Well said, I was going to post a similar response. From what I understand of how paying for bandwidth works is that as far as the ISP is concerned it doesn't matter if Im transfer voice, video, text or whatever I want over my line its done legally. To me, this is akin to saying AOL must pay us for usage of our pipes because the extreme rise in AIM usage is causing people to use the phone less. or PEOPLE ARE PLAYING WOW OVER OUR LINES, BLIZZARD MUST PAY US FOR THIS. Unless there is some sort of competition law saying you cant use their pipes for free because you directly compete with the large phone companies (which would make some sense to me as they would be profiting because they are using a competitors lines for free) I don't see the merit in this statement.

Linux can do a lot of things natively that windows can't do, or things for which you have to download third party software on windows. For someone who is very interested in the inner workings of a computer linux adds tons to the experience, it often times can force you to think harder. The fact that I got involved back before the big "Linux Desktop" push meant I was forced to use the command line very often, this was wonderful for someone like me who used to play with the dos prompt just for fun. I thrive in linux, I have been known to hole myself up infront a linux PC for weeks configuring freevo, or customizing enlightenment. In this country there are now better alternatives. FIOS(fiber optic) for the SAME cost as comcast cable internet gets me 15mb down and 2 mb up, that trumps comcast hands down. They even installed the new terminal at my home for free and gave me a free month. I also just saw that DSL prices from verizon are now $15 a month for 768 down. Why you would pay $10 a month for dialup to save $5 when the speed difference is a factor of at least 10x from 56k to 768k at this point is lost on me. As these types of services and prices become more mainstream (apparently people are signing up for fios faster than they can install it in my area and other test areas) broadband will be more prevalent. There is truth to the fact that it is harder to get broadband to all the rural areas of the US this is logistical. But its also market. A lot of people in the US just don't see a need to pay for more than dialup, but when the cost difference is a couple dollars and you notice your email download way faster and your couple websites you look at load way faster people will abandon dialup. Or so I believe.
