Thats like saying you prefer Microsoft have a monopoly instead of seperate companies.
Competition between the IMS bring innovation.
We need them to be seperate entities to ensure innovation. SO, the best thing you can do is make a client which connects to all of them so people who want, can connect to all of them, however expect AOL and all of them to block you because you wont be supporting their business (no ads)
Thats why trillian is always being blocked and really I want trillian to be blocked because it keeps AOL from profiting on IM, and if AOL doesnt profit on IM AOL wont keep innovating and offering new features. AOLIM wont improve.
Same with ICQ I hope most people do use the real ICQ and support AOL.
This way with AOL generating revenue eventually they'll port their IMs to Linux just to generate more money. They will also improve and innovate, believing they'll make more money with more users.
So please lets not try to make jabber and others STANDARD but keep them as a working alternative for techies and other professionals.
Let the average joe keep using the seperate clients.
yesterday it was working great, today it seems to not work for me anymore. Its getting faster quick though, yesterday it was almost as fast as the WWW.
buffering searches would definately solve the problem.
Why dont we buffer the searches and cache the route somehow, on certain computers so that when anyone else searches it goes directly down the preset buffered path?
Ok since you have the solution, go implement it, code it!
Considering all the PCs they have most likely get infected by Virii, and how Microsoft has 40 billion in cash sitting in the bank.
I'm Sure Microsoft has purchased hundreds of thousands, add in all of the other big companies and you get millions, add in schools and colleges along with government and you get hundreds of millions
You wont get any development support if you keep using java. Port to C.
Java apps are not easy to install usually for any OS because they require a Virtual Machine, why not just use C and develop cross platform? Please tell me why you picked java?
Thats the only problem i have with your app. I understand java allows easier cross platform development but you could have done the same thing with C, it wouldnt be as quick and easy but you'd have better support and better code in the long run.
I dont like java, Java sucks on all OS's, linux, windows, OSX.
Why would anyone ever choose java?! Most people know C, so for open source development java takes longer, java is weaker than C, slower than C, and its not really all that much more portible than C.
Why not just use C?
The only problem with this app is its java. Freenet is java and its taking forever to write because of it.
Theres not a single good java app for peer to peer, name one.
I dont care what program you make, if its java, its going to be crappy.
I dont know why theres this illusion that java is useful, its not really all that portible, you could have the same portibility with C if its writen right.
I dont think theres a single good java peer to peer program, freenet is java and thats why its taking forever to write.
Thats why you run it on top of freenet or GNUnet to make it unstraceable.
Sounds to me like a gathering of script kiddies

Sony has done this against Sega and Nintendo. Microsoft has done this before as well.
What you do is, you tell everyone you are coming out with a new product right when your competition is about to go mainstream. (PS2 hype begins when DC begain to sell more than 5 million systems)
Then you get articles printed about how your competitions product is doomed to fail, you pick it apart. While not everyone will believe the article, thousands of people will, which can turn to millions, which can kill the competiting product.
Linux luckily has a community and zealot strength behind it, if it were an ordinary company, Microsoft would have just put the final nail in the coffin,
People will be thinking "should I get Longhorn or Linux? Well this article on MSNBC says Linux is dead, and Bill Gates was on TV last night in that interview saying good things about longhorn, I think I'll go with what I already have and get longhorn"

Why are they asking what happened? Linux is just now finally getting support from OEMs, what the hell did they expect when all their time their parent company has been blocking any competiting OS from even being able to compete on the same ground as them.
So now Lindows, Mandrake, Redhat and others are getting OEM contracts and what the hell?! Now MSNBC decides to come out with an article about how Linux has failed right when it hits mainstream?
This reminds me of the BS Sony did to Sega, back when Dreamcast was a success, Sony would slowly take their developers away, and hype vaporware PS2 just to keep them from selling, then spread rumors about how DC would fail and not to buy it.
Its FUD. Microsoft is trying to keep Linux from going mainstream which Linux is just now starting to do, by talking about longhorn constantly, and manipulatnig the media.
Yeah tell them Linux has failed, and in the next article, in depth (hype) article on longhorn, and palladium, interviews with bill gates, etc.
"This is owing to the fact that bands/artists with technically savvy fans will have a lot of fans who will end up downloading music or burning CDs where as less tech-savvy fans will end up buying their CDs."
What hes saying is, the stupid people will buy CDs from the techies, the techies will get CDs from the net and burn them, and no one will buy them from the stores.
I mean yeah, this happened with the tape cassette didnt it? I guess we should go back to vinyl to end piracy.
Before tech savvy people had the computer we had the radio and tape cassette.
People could ALWAYS pirate music, yet michael jacksons triller sold 20 million copies, funny how no one decided to pirate him even though it was all over the radio all the damn time and everyone had it and could copy the cassette.
I know, I had one of those dual cassette players, you stick both cassettes into it, play one and record on the other. Funny how when everyone was using cassettes the RIAA didnt complain about sales but now, that they are losing their monopoly, piracy is suddenly a big problem?
IF the whole CD is great why would any real fan want a pathetic low quality bootleg? Bootlegs arent vinyl quality, or even CD quality.
When I want to listen on my surround sound stereo system, I dont want to be listening to a bootleg.
This is like the war cassettes vs CDs, everyone could get bootleg cassettes, now people can get bootleg CDs, but not at vinyl quality most of the time,
Musicians should up the quality of their work, If i have money I'll buy CDs sometimes not just to support the band but because its better quality.
This kinda news is like people using oil instead of hydrogen or other fuels to power cars.
This isnt good, because sure we can keep using this process, but we should use something new and better. How is keeping intel and others from innovating by improving exsisting technology better than forcing them to innovate and create new technology?
The AIDS problem in Africa is not my fault. It's a social problem caused by lack of education and ignorance of basic facts.
However you own most of the information and its your responsiblity to educate those who cannot afford education.
Poor people in Harlem is not my fault. I didn't make them poor. Same thing with people in Afghanistan. No amount of fingerpointing is going to make me feel guilty for that situation. I can fell empathy for all the above cases, but not guilt. No matter how often you try to tell me it's my fault, it's not.
Its not your fault that you grew up middle class either. Not everyone is so fortunate as you, its not like you grew up in harlem and worked your way out of there into your spot you have now, so how can you understand? Its not about guilt, it or empathy, its the fact that you have no choice, if you expect society to work, you have to make sure everyone can survive by following the rules, because when only you can surviving following the rules, you'll be the only one following your rules.
One last point: Did Bill Clinton spend his childhood and university years bitching about how bad he had it, being born in Arkansas to a single mother? Or was he too busy being a Rhodes scholar to feel sorry for himself?
That is why poor people respect Clinton, This is why he was voted in by all the democrats, because he worked hard and spent a lifetime to get his spot, he worked x100 harder than you,, x10 harder than bush, and he made it.
Not everyone however will make it, not everyone can or will be president, Clinton did the impossible and that is why I respect him. He didnt spend his childhood bitching, but he knew where he came from, and when he became president he helped make it so other people in his situation had it easier than he did. Whats wrong with helping people who are less fortunate than you are? I'm not saying let them leech you into the poorhouse, but help level the playing field so your class doesnt decide what you can and cannot do. Allow the proper services and support structures to be in place so even the poorest person can become a scientist, a lawyer, even president. Give them hope, and something to aim for and they wont become criminals, they dont become terrorists.
Remove that hope, tell them its going to be impossible and what do they have left?
Thats my point, I guess we can never agree because you've never been in a hopeeless situation. I agree to disagree.
Well, you'd still have the class system, the only diffrence is, you'd have almost class slavery
you'd have no way to ever become rich, Think about it, the rich will get richer, but the poor will have no way to get educated, so unless they are lucky, or a genius, they have no way of ever being rich.
Face it, in a taxless society, people would riot and steal, no ones going to work when theres no longer the american dream, no hope of being successful, hell they cant even be educated!
That NO one is in poverty, and that everyone has a fair chance.
This means no one should ever starve, even if they dont have a job everyone deserves shelter, and food.
This means no one should ever be denied education no matter how old, if they cannot afford college they should still be given some other chance.
Lastly, welfare SHOULD exsist, but in a diffrent fashion, perhaps instead of welfare, public shelters with paid empoyees who help the poor, and help raise children etc
this way people cant be on welfare and take the money and use it to buy drugs, or something stupid.
Thats like saying you prefer Microsoft have a monopoly instead of seperate companies.

Look, if we own the CD but not the music, we cant copy the music.
If we own the music and not the CD, we can share the music.
If we own the CD and the music we can share both..
If you have a party, you'll share all your CDs anyways with hundreds of people.
