  1. Barriers to acceptance on The Future of Ogg Vorbis · · Score: 5, Interesting

I can see one main way for Ogg to gain widespread acceptance quickly - as the sound track of your run-of-the-mill, MPAA-angering DiVX. MP3 soundtracks only allow for 2 channels, whereas Ogg will allow for n. The main thing that pisses me off about DiVX is the lack of 5.1.

Imagine how widespread Ogg would be if it was the favored soundtrack of the DiVX generation.

I just tried Videolan .. to all those reading - performance may vary depending on your setup! I don't get good Videolan performance but Xine works near perfectly for me. Videolan may work well for you, or even OMS.
There aren't that many players to try, so you may as well try all of them and see how your mileage varies. I attribute part of my problems to my Aureal Vortex 2 PCI sound card.

  4. Selfishness hurts consumers on Make Way for Fiber · · Score: 1

This happened here in Australia - a few local governments decided that since the telecommunications and power cables were on public property that they should collect rent!

What does this mean for the consumer? The corporations aren't going to cut their margin, so the rent is just going to be passed back onto the consumer in higher fees. An underground optical fibre (spelling!) cable is unharmful, unobtrusive and completely hidden. Why can't these people be a little more community-minded? (read: less selfish)

  6. Other factors on id On Linux: Bad News · · Score: 1

I had every intention to purchase Q3 for Linux, however I had trouble getting hold of it and any retailer I went to (ignorance), and I couldn't order it online since I don't have a credit card.

There certainly are other contributing factors to why Q3 for Linux didn't sell as much as anticipated. If you think back a year ago to when it was first released, the only cards compatible with it were Voodoo2s. Eventually the Matrox cards gained support thanks to Mr Carmack, but NVidia had not released its GLX just yet, and XFree 4.0 was still a little while away.

No wonder it didn't sell as much as anticipated. Not only did you have to be a Linux user to consider buying it, you also had to have a Voodoo2.

  9. Re:Well... on At Long Last, Election Day · · Score: 1

What you really don't understand that the President of the USA is more than just "ours". Apart from the fact that the USA has been self-appointed the international peace-keeping force and the upholders of democracy worldwide, the American economy dictates so much more that you seem ignorant about. Here in Australia, the value of the American dollar affects us more than you could believe. What's more, when the President of the USA says "jump!" the first instinct of the Australian government is to ask "how high?". When LBJ asked us to send troops to Vietnam, we very much obliged, even introducing conscription! And this was all just to keep Uncle Sam happy. This is not because we can't think by ourselves, or make our own decisions. It is because the President of the USA is a world leader, and not just your head of state. Keeping the American President on side is of upmost importance. The Presidential race has featured in our news every day since before the primaries. If he was just "your" leader, then we probably wouldn't care. I hate to break it to you, but the Europeans are right. Just remember, when you Americans vote, you are effectively voting on behalf of the world. When Bush (!dubya) declared war on Iraq, Australia followed suit. This is just one example. You are in the priveliged position of being the most powerful country in the world. Please don't abuse it.
