There is more of linkage of the driver with the car with a manual transmission which leads to better gas milage(5%-15%), and manual transmissions are FAR simpler(easier to fix and cheaper to buy). A better computer analogy would be coding in assembly or java. Java is easier to use, but you give up a lot of efficiency and add a bunch of complicated layers where problems can creep up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission#Benefits_and_drawbacks

I know any Serial/UART/USART controller you find today handles clock skew/drift and jitter this way, and a quick search of SPDIF controllers shows that they do the same.

Yep... actually the iPhone 3G was released before the G1. The G1 was release on October 22, 2008 and the iPhone 3G was released on July 11, 2008.

The iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G have the exact same CPU, RAM, and Screen. The only advantages the 3G has over the 2G are:
    • Real GPS (but no compas). The iPhone 2G only does tower triangulation which isn't as precise, but good enough for restaurant finding. Even the iPods will attempt to locate their geo-coordinates themselves using wifi access points
    • 3G speed...
    • Bluetooth that works with stereo headsets(A2DP)

The 3GS is a completely different phone from the 3G(although 2G/3G software runs on the 3GS). The 3GS has a much faster CPU, much better GPU, twice the RAM, shoots video, and has a compas. Comparing the G1 and 3GS wouldn't be fair.

I think the bigger problem with climate change science is that it is SOOO hard to get definitive answers. For example, look at this essay on rapid climate change. I think today most people believe that rapid(less than 100 year) climate shifts are possible and have happened, but the data isn't bulletproof and until recently(last 20 years) the majority probably wouldn't have believed it was possible. Separating the crap from the stuff that is probably-correct is too difficult for any layperson. I'm convinced that the world is probably rising in temperature from human-caused CO2/methane, but what effects that will have are unclear to me. Right now, it looks like the ocean can only rise a couple cm/100 years(a.k.a. undetectable compared to the tide).

I think deforestation and overpopulation are the real global issues for the next 100 years. The human population is still growing very fast and we have cut down most of the forests in the world. Something drastic has to happen in the next 100 years on both of these issues.
