Now if only I could figure out how this would allow oil drilling in the Arctic and I would know why they did this whole exercise.:) This is just a return to Cold War era paranoia to get defense budget stuff funded.
I wonder what those vaccines would go for on Ebay? Nothing like some supply and demand to test the auction market! Just imagine how many people would be sitting on their computers trying to snipe the last shot of vaccine available!
That's sweet! I think no one should ever buy CDS anymore.. Oh wait, how we will get our free music off the Internet then? The bottom line is someone needs to buy it until the companies do it themselves, which I don't see happening any time soon. I think alot of people don't really think about how it gets out there. Also, the more people that buy the CD, the faster it can be spread. But in the end, someone out there is buying your music for you.
The Space Program is so boring these days. If I want to learn and see stuff about space, I'll go watch a movie. Hollywood has better special effects than what the Space Shuttle brings back.
We live in a world where space travel is everywhere so it really isn't a big deal. 30 years ago it was new and exciting but now it is just a normal occurance.
Now if the Space Shuttle has to save us from a big ball of garbage, that would be something!:)

Misinformation Capitalizing on the Atlantis Movie?

I can see the gleam in the eye of these researchers. Announce the existance of these towers when everyone just saw Atlantis the movie. What the headline fails to mention is that they are natural towers, not man-made. I was a little disappointed when I read the article, I was hoping for proof that I am the reincarnation of the high king of Atlantis, but I guess the proof will have to wait.
Check out this article from a recent edition of Discover magazine. It talks about John Christy, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama, Huntsville who thinks that global warming is not as bad as we have been lead to believe. It is an interesting article, even though it goes against everything we have been told. But then, remember when the world was flat and smoking didn't cause cancer? It is always best to read opposing views before we close our minds.
A followup to my last post. This is way offtopic, but after looking at the first image result, I stumbled across this page, which is FUNNY. I'm about to pee my pants.. Oops, too late! The last picture on the last page is the best. It is every Slashdotters worst nightmare!
This is worthy of a 'rotflmao',check out the search for our very own CmdrTaco. I love the first result. This makes it much easier to stalk your favorite online personalities! Can you say, "All your pictures are belong to us?" I thought you could.:)
Oh great, it gives previews. I have a hard enough time searching for "Mangrove" trees on google in front of grandparents without worrying about something pr0n related popping up! And now this!:)
This is perfect! I had heard this rumor that there is this fabulous picture out there but all I know about it is that the word goat is associated with it. I had better search for it right now!:P
I don't think the majority of the public understands how deep our dependence on oil and its byproducts is. Everytime you hear about some new way to conserve fuel, use another kind, etc, people get their panties all damp thinking about how cool that is. The fact is that it would take years, maybe decades to ween the world off oil. We use it in about every product you can think of.
And yes, you can blame the government and auto companies for "forcing" us to use Artic oil wells, but when someone turns off all their appliances, leaves their 65 degree house, gets in their SUV, drives to the 55 degree airport, boards a huge jet, flies to the Artic and takes a cruise on a huge cruise ship to "appreciate" nature, maybe we should look at our priorities. Using a ton of natural resources to go see them doesn't make alot of sense.
I for one got gas 6 times last year, get over 30 miles to the gallon and ride my bike/bus most everywhere. Conservation is the real short-term solution. People shouldn't keep using as much fuel as possible becuase there will be an alternative one day.

But if my grandparents want a simple GUI that hides the guts, they can already buy a Mac. Trying to convince them, or anyone that isn't a geek, to use something that has traditionally been used for games will be difficult.
It has taken 10 years to get my grandparents to buy AND use a computer and now I am going to convince them to use a Linux ("What's that, a new medication?") box made from a video game machine ("Games are for kids!")
The reason MS dominates the market is that they got into the market, squashed the competition, there was no alternative and now most people don't care and don't want to learn something new.
It is hard enough to get people to change software, but this author thinks you can change what software AND hardware someone uses. I don't see this happening for a long time, if ever.
The bottom line is that these may help you live longer, possibly even forever, but they are only part of a healthy life. There is no ONE thing that will extend life, no matter what anyone says. You have to have a combination of healthy food, exercise, maybe these rings and a whole bunch of other stuff. The fact is that our ignorance about immortality and a long life is far greater than any knowledge we currently have, so don't write him off so quickly.
Electromagnetic energy plays a big part in our world, we all have energy in our bodies, so maybe these rings can really help you. I doubt they let you live forever, that just doesn't seem possible, but along with other things I am sure they could help. I would think that especially here on Slashdot, where everyone is supposed to be more open-minded, that you would research these rings and make thoughtful comments instead of instantly labeling this guy a crackpot.
I think he isn't seeing the whole picture, but maybe one day, his rings in combination with something else will actually extend life. But I don't think any readers even care about this, since his other comments were good old fashioned flamebait. Don't let his other radical statements cloud your judgement on the rings. They probably don't give you immortality, but they are at least another avenue to explore.
Like most silly lawsuits, you shouldn't blame the people who file the suit. Usually, they have been convinced to do this by some money-grubbing lawyers who make money no matter what happens.
Unless a lawyer tells someone who they should sue and why, most people wouldn't come up with this stuff by themselves. Sure, they aren't too bright for listening to a lawyer, but if there is money involved, intelligence sometimes gets misplaced.:)
Between the main page, the meta keywords (starwars, star, trek, antichrist) and pop-up spam pages on that site, I thought Slashdot had been hacked again and someone had posted a fake story! That's what happened, right?
Yup, I agree! But parents need that big SUV to protect themselves (hopefully) from some kid with road rage who has played to much Quake because his parents were too busy buying a SUV to protect themselves, etc, etc..:) It is an endless cycle!
This quote really sums up everything to do with this issue:
"Hey there are some games out there that are pretty ugly, and why don't you go see what your kids are doing?"
Computers, televisions, playstations and all similiar products are toys, not babysitters. Parents need to realize this and actually get involved with their child's life. Because if parents don't get involved with their children, the government will and that doesn't sound too exciting to me.
To the typical tourist, dreadful usually means different. As long as it doesn't look like a health hazard, I like to keep an open mind. Sheep's stomach, cobra and duck feet sound horrible but actually aren't that bad.
I agree with the Chinese food comment, they are everywhere, but they aren't owned by one company (at least I don't think, wouldn't that be funny) so you can usually count on a wider variety of food and quality.
I agree that some people are ignorant of alternatives, but most just don't care anyway. Who wants to heat the grill and stare at the steak defrosting. As Homer says, "40 seconds, but I want it now!":P
I agree with the tourist comment. Speaking as an American (-1 Flamebait:P) I know that American tourists want to go to another country, be able to eat and shop at the same stores as home and then feel great becuase they are out "seeing" the world and all its cultural differences. I too prefer the backroads and local places because in my old age I am appreciating service and quality more than price.
You do have to give some "credit" to the consumers for making their world the way it is, you can't just blame big nasty corporations. Although they do have money and power, the reason they do is because over the years consumers have been feeding them money. Remember that every company started small.
You could say That's the worst of (consumer) America -- putting the needs of (their wallets and lazy asses) ahead of (quality and service) The fact is consumers like convenience, low prices and consistancy. Most people don't care about service, especially when something is really cheap. They just buy another. Does someone care that their.39 cent hamburger tasted like crap? No, people just stuff their face and don't care about taste as long as it is fast and easy.
The bottom line is people value convenience and low prices more than quality or service. That will not change anytime soon. And even though rioting is fun and exciting for the whole family, that is not the answer. Corporations are there because we put them there, not because one day they arrived with tons of money and power...
