Actually, FM has pretty good fidelity and dynamic range, assuming you have full quieting in your receiving equipment.
There is so much bandwidth there, they can modulate multiple audio signals which are totally separate... In fact, multiple piped in music sources for businesses used to be sent on the station where I worked... So you had the mono signal, the Stereo differences sent on the first pilot, then a couple more audio channels for different music sources that got played in business lobbies and on as phone hold music all over the city.
Most "audiophiles" don't possess the necessary acoustic environment, speakers and setup to actually hear any of the differences all that money they spent on equipment. Most of the time, the argument boils down to who spent the most and can produce the best looking performance numbers from the sales literature.
Not to say there are not differences, only that most folks, unless trained, wouldn't be able to hear them even if the sources where side by side and setup the same. Most don't have the equipment, ears and skills to setup their stuff anyway.
Most pop songs could probably be listened to in 10-bit without any noticeable difference. Too much compression.
LOL.. I think you are being generous with 10 bits. I used to work at a "top 40" pop format station (as junior audio engineer), I can tell you they process and compress what comes off the CD's into oblivion to get the audio signal as "loud" sounding as they can. It was awful sounding to me... These days most Pop coming off of CD's have the same sound to me and needless to say, I still don't like it.
...the sillycon valley. It's always going to be the center of tech...
In my experience, any statement that contains "always" that's not based in scientific and repeatable observations, especially those that are speaking of some future state of things, usually turn out to be incorrect. I'm not saying this one is, only that it's very likely wrong.
Detroit used to be the center of automobile manufacturing, but today "motor city" is awash in urban blight and poverty while the manufacture of automobiles has moved away.
IF your probable cause is even partially justified by a politically motivated and funded document and your warrant request involves possible monitoring of the opposing party's candidate/campaign... We have a SERIOUS problem. If for no other reason than it looks really bad and opens the investigation up to being accused of being driven by partisan political motives.
There may have been probable cause w/o the Steele dossier but who in their right mind would use such a document to justify probable cause, full knowing it's source? This was a seriously stupid move made by the FBI, with the full knowledge of Comey and McCabe, who both are now having issues with telling the truth about all this.
You do see how this appears right? You do agree that this was a stupid move? What SHOULD have happened is the warrant should have been obtained WITHOUT the source that taints the whole investigation with the charges of being motivated by partisans. The FBI should NEVER use stuff like this, EVER. And the idiots who allowed this at the FBI need to be called on this stupidity...
The *problem* for using AM broadcast towers for cell phones and line of sight RF links is they are usually not located in the right places and are usually taken down when the station goes bust unless they are under 200' tall.
AM is pretty low frequency and this means that you didn't need line of sight to the tower to receive it. During the day, propagation to the local area was almost assured, even with a modest antenna and ground plane. You didn't need a tall tower or an elevated location, you just needed a modest one you could load with a good ground plane that was close to the center of your desired coverage area. This means AM towers are not all that useful for RF line of sight links, they are not tall enough and they are in the wrong places.
Any tower over 200' requires marking by the FAA regulations. This means that a tower owner MUST maintain the lights/paint on any tower over 200' or they risk getting fined. If the tower was used for a station that's out of business and was over 200' tall, it gets taken down and sold for scrap so you don't have to pay the electric bill and for somebody to climb up and replace the light bulbs or repaint. If it's under 200', how useful is it to a line of sight RF link?
Now.. FM and TV towers are TOTALLY different situations. Both FM and TV are limited to line of sight (plus a fraction) so they are TALL and in locations that overlook large geographic areas. However, the article is about the towers left behind when AM stations go bust... Which isn't going to be all that useful...
True, you CAN pay too much for crap.... But, you are not usually going to get quality at bargain basement prices either.
However, if you forego the high pressure sales pitches and follow a couple of simple rules, you are less likely to get taken paying premium prices for crap equipment.
My best advice is to buy your appliances from a non-national big box supplier, but comparison shop for the similar models at your local retailer. Shop between manufacturers online and find multiple options that are in your price range and have the features you like. Use the internet to find reviews on the stuff on your list. Look at manufacturers too, which ones build the best stuff historically? What kind of warranty do they give? Are customers happy or are they complaining about the same things? Don't just buy from the local big box retailer taking the word of the kids who sell these things and service contracts on commission.
Don't be in a hurry, buy the best deal and above all, make sure you are checking prices from more than one source on EVERYTHING. I find that I make my biggest mistakes when I'm in a hurry. Take your time, do the research. If the cheap stuff is trying to pass off as quality, you will likely find it at thrift sale prices online. If you do, beware.
The design of these things hasn't really changed all that much in decades. I seriously don't think that they have changed all that much engineering wise because there isn't any money in it. Sure, the control boards with the attached switches have changed, but I can tell you a couple of things you look for when buying.
First, NO pressure switches on the user interface. You know, those "buttons" that look like bubbles? DON'T buy them, they wear out quickly. Buy stuff with real buttons and/or rotary encoders or even touch based user interfaces. Those bubble switches are cheap and wear out quickly, they are a sign that the device you are buying is crap.
Second, NO LCD segment displays. Segmented LED's are more reliable and durable. If your device is sporting some LCD user interface, they don't take vibration, heat or moisture very well, it's going to break down and it's going to be EXPENSIVE because it's attached to that main board that's always expensive.
Third, Don't buy the new wiz bang shiny unit with all the newest bells and whistles. Back off a bit and buy the similar model, from a known manufacturer that has a history of quality. Consumer reports used to be a good way to get this kind of information, these days online review sites you trust can work. Remember, simple is better, both for reliability and cost. What are you really going to use? Don't buy more than that.
Also, for most appliances you can pull up the assembly diagrams and cost out various parts. If you really want to know what repairs are going to cost, go take a look on a appliance part site and look at what parts cost what. It's pretty obvious when things are getting out of hand.
In short, buy simple stuff that's going to last... If the controller board is rolling craps to often or the motor is burning out every 3 years, well then, you didn't do this right.
So you admit that the wire tap was put in place but it wasn't Trump (It was Carter Page). Page hasn't been accused of any wrongdoing so far, but the warrant was issued based upon Page's name showing up in the "Steele Dossier" and little else.
I will remind you that the "Steele Dossier" was basically opposition research, started but abandoned by the Cruz campaign during the primaries, then heavily funded up by the Hillary campaign after the conventions. So the question becomes, how does opposition research from a political source end up being used by the FBI as justification for a FISA warrant? Further, how does such justification fly though the FISA process without so much as a question?
This was the point of the dueling memos... Face it, the use of this dossier as ANY part of any investigation by the FBI is a problem, then when you consider how it was funded and who got investigated with this being used as evidence, was really bad. It basically turned the FBI into a political player in the 2016 campaign, which makes the US look like a two bit dictatorship with kangaroo courts if it is allowed to continue. The FBI shouldn't be doing things or investigating people based on political documents, regardless of which party is in power.
James Comey pretty much made the FBI into a political organization. Listen to what he's said about why he did what he did during the election, he was being driven by political events and requests from his political masters and admits to it. He tried to placate the political leaders and drove investigations and his public statements accordingly. Yea, he got put in a bad place by the Clinton/Obama people but he bowed to the pressure they applied. THEN, his folks use the Steele dossier in investigating Trump's campaign (and he admits to knowing about it)? What a holy mess he made, both of the election AND the FBI's reputation...
For FISA warrants? Yes, you toss the inadvertently found evidence about a US citizen that wasn't specifically being looked for. It is the price of using the secret warrant. This doesn't preclude you from using information on foreign national outside the country to direct an investigation of a US citizen, you just cannot use the FISA obtained information unless you get a warrant for the new crime, which means collecting enough evidence to get the FISA warrant and collecting new information you can use.
The Grand Jury process is a problem and it's obviously used for political purposes more than it should. However, I don't have a clue how you fix this. I worry about the process where only one side presents evidence and I worry about the ramifications of taking the 5th during such proceedings, where you cannot change your mind about that after you start answering questions. Maybe they should grant immunity to witnesses for anything discussed not related to the crime(s) being investigated? Maybe they should be required to provide exact questions which they can force you to answer, but allow you to refuse any additional questions? I don't know. But I agree, the process is troubled.
It's also my experience that most "durable goods" (Like kitchen appliances and such that go 10+ years) usually last long enough to be worthless before they break.
Speak for yourself. All the "durable" appliances I've bought in the last 10 years have needed out-of-warrantee service before 10 years. Well before.
Buy better stuff and take care of it maybe... I've had two minor repairs to the washer/dryer pair we purchased 10 years ago now. I was able to diagnose and repair both myself. The dryer had a temperature limit switch fail, repair parts where about $20 but only because I wasn't sure which of the two possible parts it was so I replaced both. The Washer needed $70 worth of water inlet valves, again only one was bad but I replaced both. I had a garbage disposal go bad after 15 years (outside of 10 years) and everything else, fridge, stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher have been running just fine since installed with only normal maintenance and cleaning. Spending $100 on repair parts for all these items is pretty good for 10+ years so I don't know what the issue is with your stuff.
I know a bunch of people who buy cheap stuff or don't take care of things and they have a lot more trouble. Maybe you are just not very lucky?
LOL. Who doesn't KNOW that Obama was doing all he could for the democratic candidate? He sure spent a lot of time fundraising and stumping. But it wasn't really HIM, but his administration which was getting ready to shift gears and work for the Hillary Clinton administration to which I refer. Comey, in his book, says that he was working for Clinton during the campaign, others where doing exactly the same thing, hedging their bets on the sure thing of Hillary.
But hey... Let's put partisanship aside and end FISA abuse by making it a contested process, where there is an advocate for the target of the warrant, tasked with protecting the interests in the secret court. Let's also make FISA warrants only valid for evidence collection in criminal investigations where the alleged crime was specified in the warrant application and the alleged perpetrators are named. So if the evidence uncovered isn't about the crime in question being committed by the person(s) identified, it's not usable in a trial.
Let's also make it a felony to collect and use information though FISA warrants for anything other than the criminal investigation disclosed in the application or lying on an application for a warrant. The only exception to this is for intelligence gathering on FORIGEN targets, in which case the US citizen's identification MUST be hidden and the information is not used for criminal investigations.
Ordered parts on Amazon and repaired my LG washing machine myself just this week.. What's the problem with repairing appliances?
I suppose that a 10 year old washing machine with a bad water inlet valve is not exactly like fixing your 72" OLED TV or finding parts for the latest Apple device that doesn't get deactivated by the next software update, but do we really need laws for this?
In my experience, most "appliances" phones, tablets and laptops are pretty much throw away consumer devices that you toss and replace on a regular basis anyway. It's also my experience that most "durable goods" (Like kitchen appliances and such that go 10+ years) usually last long enough to be worthless before they break. It's also my experience that most non-durable consumer devices like phones, TV's and laptops last long enough that by the time they break I want to replace them, assuming you take reasonable care of them.
Shesh... Be carful there with what you accuse the Trump administration of..
I'd like to point out that MONTHS ago, around the time of Trump's "Wires tapped" Tweet that caused a week of "He's crazy!" reporting, it was alleged that the Obama administration did just this, went to the FISA court to get a political opponent under surveillance. Since then, more evidence has surfaced that indicates that this is actually true. (Remember the dueling "memos" from the house committee? That's what this was all about.)
So, I agree. Using the secrete FISA courts to get a secret warrant to spy on your political opposition is not good, neither would using such spying for personal or political gain. But I'm afraid that there is ample evidence that it has been going on and heads should roll for abusing the FISA system... Oh, and heads actually ARE rolling.... But you don't want me to discuss all that because the media isn't really covering it.
"Device with limited storage" == "Phone" or "Tablet"
So this says that Windows 10 is targeted for embedded devices like phones and tablets... So the death of Window's phones was announced prematurely then?
Because YOU GUYS won't discuss options on ANYTHING.
It may not be apparent to you, or for the makers of such partisan statements as you just made, but the current situation in congress is largely do to the democrats deciding to say "no" about nearly everything. The facts are clear, Republicans can and do regularly pass legislation though the house that dies in the Senate. Why is that? Because by Senate rules it takes a super majority to pass anything, which, if all republicans vote for something also requires a handful of democrats to vote for it too. With democrats sitting on their hands yelling "Impeach, Impeach" there isn't much the republicans can do short of taking the Senate nuclear and suspending the cloture rules.
So, you wana go Nuclear in the Senate or You wana accept responsibility that "YOUR SIDE" has here? Maybe a negotiated peace? Your choice...
Human activity is NOT electronic, so spying via AI then is easily subverted. Just keep things personal and/or off the electronic infrastructure your adversaries can monitor. Only a fool would think AI can monitor stuff it cannot possibly see.
Yea, AI might be able to sort though reams and reams of data looking for information, but it's never going to see stuff that's not in the data it can collect. There will need to be "spies on the ground" forever, both to bypass electronic monitoring and infiltrate to collect information in ways that cannot be monitored..
This article is garbage... Who in their right mind thinks this even could happen?
Seriously, who believes this tripe? No human spies eh? Yea... Not going to happen.. Just like taking the pilot out of fighter aircraft isn't going to happen. Sure, SOME activities will be automated, but humans are going to be a part of these activities for as long as more than one human is alive.. I know it sounds tempting and the common wisdom is AI will take over all sorts of complex things, but it won't really. Sure, AI will make tasks less complex and take over the mundane, but It's not doing these pie in the sky kind of things any time soon...
They hack commercial satellites and there are lots of them, nimrod.
Nation states hijack commercial satellites? Citation please?
Such activity by a foreign power would be generally the same as hijacking a commercial vessel on the open sea. You might get away with it, but do it enough and the originating country is going to get upset with you..

LOL @ starting a war.
