The upside of this, of course, is that it won't be necessary to pay for songs that are just "album filler".
Ok, I've snapped. I can't stand hearing people bitch about "having to pay $18 for a CD with only two or three good songs, and the rest filler."
The solution to that problem is easy : Don't buy shitty music.
If you're buying the work of artists that are only capable of two or three 'good' songs on an album, that should be a hint that they suck.
Artists that suck are not deserving of your money. Do not give it to them. Yes, that means don't buy the damned album. As for the one you already bought -- sell it to someone with bad taste, or keep it as a reminder of your own formerly-bad taste.
I'm not even making assumptions as to what's good. This isn't even a RIAA vs. independent issue. There are shitty artists on both sides.
If an artist puts out a CD full of crap, blame the artist. If you buy that CD,blame yourself.
Have you tried to record with.wav sound recording application with a new sound card under XP or w2k?
Hmm why doesn't it work? Turns out your sound is actually already encypted! To be XP ready, you must have encryption installed and used! This is what causes the sound lag under w2k and XP system in games. Newer versions of Microsoft's libraries can compile support for encypted sounds so you can listen to them but if you use an older version of wavestudio or the soundrecorder that comes with windows, you will notice nothing but silence if you try to record a cd. I updated my wave studio app and the problem was fixed. It is creppy though.
Do you actually have any evidence of this
other than your own experience? I for one
have no idea what you're talking about, having
never had anything like what you're describing
happen to me in 2k. It sounds more like you
don't know how to select a recording source
(which is not set to CD by default).
I'd be impressed if windows was encrypting
an audio stream on-the-fly, considering the
100ms latency I normally get. And that's with
DirectX! ASIO gets me 10ms.
In other words, it sounds like you've
just concoted your own crackpot theory
as to why you couldn't do what you were
trying to do.
Putting public domain words into a new format does not suddenly make them copyrightable, nor mean that you own the copyright to it. That's absurd. It would be like me taking a Michael Crichton book and reformatting it, then claiming some kind of copyright over it. Absolute non-sense.
Your comparison is flawed, as a Michel Chrichton book would not be in the public domain.
As for the real issue, the fact that Alderson Reporting has the exclusive right to recording Supreme Court arguments and selling official transcipts doesn't necessarily imply that they have a copyright on it. One can sell something public domain for as much as one wants. I'm not sure that this is the case, but the transcript linked to states that it was transcribed by Alderson, but does not say it was copyrighted by them.

Many *pirated* copies of Win2k/WinXP won't boot from the CD, because the original pirate-er
just copied all the files, and didn't do a bit-for-bit clone.
Firstly, I suggest actually reading the whole post before blazing off on some self-righteous attempt to discredit it. Heaven forbid you should agree with some of it.
Without even being so bold as to say you disagree with the original poster, you weakly attempt to associate his comments with Hitler, again, without being so bold as to say it directly.
How does liking big tits and thinking MTV sucks warrant a comparision to Hitler? Hmm?
He expressed his opinions, some of which I agree with, some of which I don't. Frankly, I think that people should be allowed to pray to whatever god or gods they want, and I'm glad I live in a country where I can say that without being put in prison.
Even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if that means I have to put up with the opinions of knee-jerk idiots like yourself.

Ok, that's kind of a cheap shot, but most of what you say about QuickTime is too. Most of that happens with Windows Media Player, also. At least the versions beyond 6.4. 6.4 seems to play a lot nicer with other apps. It actually works with WMFv7 and v8-encoded streams, too. Where to find a copy of 6.4 is another question entirely...
It's not clear if you know this or not, but the name refers to Dante's Inferno, where disgruntled Italian poet Dante ventures into Hell in a quest to figure out 'What It's All About'(TM).
Similarly 'Limbo', 'Styx', 'Charon' and certainly many other various bits of the Inferno system are references to that work.
If I remember correctly, contrary to the typical image of 'Hell', fire serves primarily as a punishment for the lustful. Perhaps this is a convoluted way of selling with sex?
Then again, requiring people to understand symbolism in medival literature probably isn't very good marketing either.
I believe you are getting LAME confused with the 'official' MP3 codec by Fraunhoffer & Thompson.
LAME is, in fact, GPLed, and does not require any of the licensing you described. In theory, you're supposed to have a patent license from F&T to use it, too, but in reality, it's unenforcable.
As for Vorbis, I find that the open-source ideal of "Give your project a really dumb name." works against it more than anything. That, and the fact that if I am concerned about audio quality, then I probably shouldn't be compressing it anyway.

IIRC, the export restrictions were directed toward 'unauthorized' countries. That is, Sony couldn't ship them (in quantity) to countries Japan didn't approve of. Naturally, they approve of the US, so there is no export limitation to the US.
In any event, I don't think it was just a stunt, as we have just as many outdated 'weapon' classifications for stuff like crypto and the Apple G4 in the US.

When, oh God, when, will people RTFA,
...fuckin' kids these days...
or just the post, for christsakes.
The feature you're asking for is exactly
what this extention allows.
Interesting, but it wouldn't work.
A 'mist', perhaps, but LSD wouldn't
vaporize.
And the quantity you'd need to make any
decent quantity of mist would be both
damn near impossible to obtain, and
an absurdly high dosage.
This phrase "as far as i can tell", I do not think it means what you think it means.

That's just what they want you to think.
They also don't want me to get past the lameness filter. Blah Blah.
