how about "never give a sucker an even break", later used by WC Fields?
Fields wrote the screenplay for his movie of the same name, so yes, that was him. He was a nasty drunk himself in real life, kind of an a**hole because of drink. Here's a link of W.C. Fields quotes, and below that one that he didn't say, but was attributed to him.
Anyone who hates children and dogs can't be all bad. Although a very commonly attributed to Fields himself, this is derived from a statement which was actually first said about him by Leo Rosten during a "roast" at the Masquer's Club in Hollywood in 1939, as Rosten explains in his book, The Power of Positive Nonsense (1977) "The only thing I can say about W. C. Fields... is this: Any man who hates dogs and babies can't be all bad."
I hear where your coming from, been there, believe me! I've had to deal with angry fools all throughout my life, it seems. Last year I rented a room in a house where I had to live with "the angriest guy in the entire town!" without getting angry back at him, or else it would've gotten violent, cops called etc. Not good. I actually googled "how do I deal with angry people", and this link helped me handle living there until I could move out, and I'm in a much better place today physically and in my mind also, more peaceful. Here's that link...
The main thing to do when you have to learn when someone's out of control, in your face angry is 'don't react' to them. All that does is escalate things and makes the situation worse, and now you have two fools arguing. Don't be one of those two fools! Sometimes being an adult means walking away, even when you know you're 'right'. There's a lot of people in jail or graves because they were 'right' at the time, and they should've walked away at the time, but they wouldn't or couldn't let it go, and they allowed their anger and righteousness control them. And an adult needs to know how to control their emotions, not the other way around.
You know how people will say, "She/he made me so MAD!"? I come right back at them and say, "No, you 'allowed' them to make you mad!" No one should be able to dictate any emotions you feel but YOU. Because if they do, then you let some fool determine YOUR mood, and how dumb is that? For hours and days later you're still mad, while the other person has likely forgotten all about it and is somewhere whistling a happy tune somewhere, but you are still holding that feeling. Get what I'm trying to say here? Don't allow some a@@hole 'rent space in your head'. Shit wipes off of you IF you do the wiping off yourself. You have to do that, because the other person won't do it for you, that's for damn sure.
And the more you practice this concept, the easier it gets to do, it becomes 'second nature' to you. I've done it enough by now that I can recognize an angry fool right away, and (mostly) don't let them affect me or my mood for the rest of my day. It's great, actually, to see how confused they get when I don't get angry back in kind, like they're expecting. Trust me, it works, but I didn't get like this overnight, took a lot of practice of not reacting to jerks to get this far. And while I'm not 100% perfect at it, I'm MUCH better at handling angry people than I used to be.:^)
Good luck to you sir, and yes, change that phone plan as soon as you can. That's something you can control, just maybe not right now. S.F.
It sounds to me like you and the op have figured out a very important lesson for happiness in life:
Don't sweat the little shit.
And when you're 85, and look back on your life, you'll be able to see that it was made up of mostly 'little shit'.
Life's too short for going around screaming into your phone at phone/cable reps. Anger's a wasteful emotion, does no good to anybody, especially the angry guy.
There is an answer to almost any problem in life, you iust may not know what it is yet. And that's okay, when the time's right you'll get your answers. It may not be the answer you would want it to be, but it will be the answer. Don't expect more than that, roll with the punches, and you and those in your life will be happy (er).
Oh, and staying away from drinking and drugs helps a lot. The world is the same as it's always been, it's our perspective of it that changes. And having a sober brain really helps.
I repeat, Life is made up of a series of 'little shit' events that you can handle. You've handled them all so far, no reason to think you can't handle the rest, as they happen to you. Choose to be happy, it is a choice that we get to make every day of our amazing lives. And it beats choosing to be unhappy.:-)
The problem today is that some of these handheld lasers are 10X more powerful than they're rated at.
{Low-cost apparatus designed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers to quickly and accurately measure the properties of handheld laser devices has shown that nearly 90 percent of green pointers and 44 percent of red pointers tested were out of compliance with federal safety regulations.
Green pointers, which rely on frequency-doubling optics, also emitted “unacceptable” levels of infrared light, reported the team led by NIST Laser Safety Officer Joshua Hadler. It also found one pointer delivering more than ten times the allowable output power in the visible region. Reporting the results of its study on 122 pointers at the International Laser Safety Conference taking place in Orlando, Florida, this week, NIST says that the apparatus has been deliberately designed to be replicated easily by other institutions.
While anecdotal reports of green laser hazards have previously appeared in scientific journals and the media, NIST says its tests are the first reported precision measurements of a large number of handheld laser devices. The tests also showed, unexpectedly, that many red laser pointers are also out of compliance with federal rules as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). "Our results raise numerous safety questions regarding laser pointers and their use," the team's paper states.}
A little OffTopic about Android's 'switch apps' feature (on ICS and higher) from a recent Slashdot discussion.
I've learned that swiping the app offscreen to the left doesn't 'force stop' it, it just removes the icon from the 'running apps' list.
Doing a 'long press' on the apps icon brings up a sub-menu of 2 options, "remove from list" and "app info". Tapping on the 'app info' shortcut brings you to the 'app info screen', from there the app can be 'force stopped'.
I'm posting this here in the hopes that it'll clear up any confusion caused by that previous discussion.:-)
Just swipe the app to the right in the list of all running apps and voila, app stopped.
So I look in settings under "apps" and "running". I see Google maps running (one app, one process started by the app). Now I press the "running apps" button and, my goodness, no Google Maps in the list of running apps, nothing to swipe. Ahem.
I'm a little late in posting this, but I've learned that swiping the app doesn't 'kill' it, you need to do a 'long press' on it. This brings up a sub-menu, NOW press on 'app info'. And that shortcut brings you to the 'app info screen', and from there you can 'force stop' that app.
Google doesn't explain this too well. It does make that option more sensible.
All right, I'll concede the point about the logo, I agree with you, actually. When I hear 'Star Trek logo', I also instantly think of the words 'Star Trek' from TOS's opening title sequence, not the com-links, badges or whatever. http://www.google.com/search?q=star+trek+logo
What I didn't know about was Star Trek-Phase II, a not for profit, fan financed ST series that almost has three episodes finished. Below is a link to their webpage, looks real good.
He may have looked normal but I bet that 500 points got him a rock of crack, a shard of meth, a bag of heroin or a bottle of cheap wine. The game where you want to win but no one ever does.
Like in 'War Games', the best way to win at those games is not to play. This guy I spoke of, his eyes seemed clear of drug/alcohol abuse, though I could tell he had some form of mental illness, gave me the creeps after just a little conversation with him. One of those types who are 'detached' from empathy for other people, kind of like Lanza, and I wouldn't want that creepy guy having access to killing weapons of any kind. The weird part is he looks outwardly 'normal'.
Perhaps the genie's too long out of the bottle with guns in the U.S. Maybe the best we can do now is, as someone here suggested, have liability insurance for gun ownership. Lanza's mother should have had her weapons properly secured in a gun safe or some other way, especially when she was well aware of her son's mental condition. Unfortunately she chose to 'live by the gun', and in an ending fitting of a Twilight Zone episode, died by the very gun she bought to protect herself.
Over 30 die from guns in the U.S. every single day, none die from drones. True fact.
I could get extra evil here by mentioning the Marie Osmond version of the song "Paper Roses", but that would be so wrong to do to people...
Or the Jackson 5's 'ABC'. Damn. Now I have to RTFA so that I can get that one out of my head . ..
I'm quite gratified to have no idea what either of you are talking about.:D Now all I need to do is resist the urge to Google...
Radio DJ's would actually apologize to their audience after playing 'Paper Roses" since they knew FM signals travel through the body. Do Not google "ABC", even though it'd be easy as 1, 2, 3...
Some time ago a normal looking guy tried to bum some money from me, supposedly for a cup of coffee. Instead I offered to go into a deli with him and pay for his coffee, which he declined. I talked with him some more, and he told me how he asks strangers for money daily, but not because he needs the money. It's a game of points to him. One dollar is one hundred points. I realized that he obviously had some deeper mental issues, and after (unsuccessfully) trying to explain to him why he shouldn't do that to people, I left him.
To all outward appearances this guy seemed 'normal', but he did have his own weird point scoring game inside his head that he plays on people. (And I thank God that the 'points' he plays for are really just pennies.)
I'm curious, what type battery did you use for it, and how much life do you get now? (I own another Archos tablet, the 7G3, and will want to replace it when it eventually goes south.) Was it easy to disassemble / fit in / reassemble? Thanks in advance.
There's any number of ways you can go now. Lack of microSD card on the Nexus would keep me from buying that, wtf was Google thinking? (I know, the "cloud" is all you need, I don't always want the "cloud".)
Archos / Arnova devices also enjoy a great online community with lots of modding at www.Arctablet.com . I own the $100 Arnova 7G3 tablet, damn nice little tablet with ICS, hdmi out, usb support and decent battery. Keep in mind that these aren't $700 tablets, and all of todays high end tablets are going to be outdated in a year or two.
Oh that sounds so nice. All we got here in Oregon is Second Winter.
I googled 'springter' and it's in the urban dictionary...
1. Springter
(noun) 1. when winter just won't let go and spring should be here but you're experiencing multiple blizzards and making more snowmen in one week than you did all winter 2. when you see green grass peeking through the snowpiles 3. when your windows are open to let in a fresh spring breeze but you are still wearing mittens and scraping your windshield.
On March 31st we had another blizzard, Springter is finally here!
And, "Who will watch the watchers", when they go wrong?
The first taste's 'free', huh? Is this a game or an illicit, highly addictive drug?
how about "never give a sucker an even break", later used by WC Fields?
