I once heard an argument saying global warming was *good* thing...
We burn fossil fuels to heat ourselves when its cold. Burning them makes the Earth heat up. So if we burn all fossil fuels now, by the time they're all gone the Earth will have heated up so much we won't need them any more.
I think any language can have a future - closed source or not - if you achieve the result you want.
Many people dont care if a language is open source. They might want to produce a windows program and choose VB to develop it. If VB does what they want and they get the application at the end of it, they are happy. The same person might produce a web site using PHP. Two widly differing languages produced by widly differning communities/companies - but each suits the task in hand.
Just remember - closed source does not mean poorly maintained 100% of the time.
Anything's got to be better than infra-red wireless controllers. At least with the good old wired controllers, if your girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other decides to stand in front of the screen and nag you about taking out garbage/washing up/paying them attention you can hit pause:)
Computer games dont change how people behave! If they did, all the people who played PacMan when they were young would now be running round in darkened rooms, listening to repetetive electronic music and munching pills!!
Yeah, they are more expensice than "bargain bucket" hosting ocmpanies, but they are still cheaper and offer a better service than Verio.
We used to host with Verio. Our site was constantly down, it seemed to go down 9i.e. the box was not pingable) at around 5:30pm, just as the support guys were going home. We found out after a few weeks that this was being done on purpose (and we have the proof of this in the form of an email sent to operations requesting that the box be made unavailable each evening.) Verio also insist on having control over the box, if you change the root password or disable their backup uid0 account (which they didnt tell us about, I found it while doing some security checks and thought we had an intruder. I changed every password and upgraded our bind / proftpd and inetd config) they will suspend your account!
Since we moved to rackspace we have had no downtime at all. We can do what we want with our box, and apart from sendmail configuration, they are ready to help out with any problems.
One of my old tutors was an expert witness on this case. The argument put forward was that the guys who developed the game must have been trying to break Sega's initialization sequence by reverse engineering, as it is a four byte code, each byte having 256 possibilities, therefore there were 4294967296 possible codes. And reverse engineering the Sega hardware and code was illegal.
It was then pointed out that, when choosing a 4 byte code, SEGA had chosen... well.. SEGA. No reverse engineering needed, just the level of skill required to try "1234" on an idiots luggage lock.
Personally, I like to pay for my fave linux distro. I tried Mandrake 7.1 from a cover disk, liked it, bought the boxed 7.2 version.
From my point of view, i want mandrakesoft to keep producing Linux-Mandrake. They need money to do that, so I'm not going to mis-quote the GPL to avoid paying them money for a product which is worth it.
I like this idea. if all browsers sent this type of info as a http_header it would make it so much easier to direct people reliably to a version of a site which suited their bandwidth / screen resolution better.
Encrypting your email is very often nessecary in industry. Take for example, a large company who registers domain names by way of an email template. That template contains sensitive information about them, which if intercepted as plain text, could allow anyone to register domains as that company. That email needs to be encrypted.
I recently produced an online recruitment and jobsearch site that allows recruitment agencies to post jobs by email (I'll resist a shamelss plug). The job post emails are encrypted, mostly at the request of the agencies who were worried about their usernames and password being intercepted as plain text.
I grow very worried that one day, someone will do this to humans too.
But I suppose you could detect one of the modified humans by the luminosity gene... simply if she glowed in the dark when you take her to bed... get out of there!
A real Robin Hood hacker would steal web space from rich people who can afford high powered dedicated servers and give it to us poor guys that can only afford to virtually host their ISP given subdomains....

Now there's an idea... What OS Magazine :)

Maybe that sheds some light on what the question is, I dont know. But it certainly makes the answer more meaningful.
There are 3 main ways if dealing with a killer asteroid.
1) Stand Still. Look at the asteriod getting closer. Get squished.
2) Run around, panic and scream. Observe the asterioid getting closer. Get squished.
3) Jump up and down, scream at everyone for not being able to think of anything. Get squished.
