OK, from that statement alone we know you're lying...a *real* programmer prefers dual or triple screen which you can't get with the iBook unless you want to void your warranty.

Best of all, you get the best looking and rock solid UNIX machine ...

Yeah, umm I do believe the part about doing web design and graphics now though. Beautiful as in "Look out for the oversized high-lighter!!".

...that runs thousands of open source programs ...

    (READ: High Quality, we swear!)

    ...and MS Office ...

until Microsoft pulls the plug because it doesn't need to keep Apple around anymore that is.

Don't let anyone tell you that the iBook is not fast enough...

We're all glad that you think it's fast enough, but you are slow...so your opinion doesn't count.

It's virtually silent, and the battery life is great.

I'm writing this on a Sony Vaio. I hear nothing but the clicking of the keyboard. Woohoo, Apple has sure out-done us this time!

I love the instant sleep and wake up feature...

Can't get that on Windows...no way.

...and use it more than 10 hours a day.

Think about it...the iBook is much less powerful than an x86 laptop running Windows...don't you think it would use less power? Apple's marketing department is at it again trying to turn a negative into a positive...it doesn't fool us.

But if you can afford it, buy the 12" PowerBook ...

*If* you can afford the 12" one?? Don't you think it's a little odd that something with a diminutive screen costs so much?

Whatever you do, just keep clear of Windows - it's boring and full of security flaws.

And what is so exciting about the Mac OS? Oh yeah, it's so exciting that they couldn't even come up with a name for it. And here's a tip about security: the more people that use an OS, the more flaws will be discovered, the better it will get. You don't discover security flaws on the Mac OS because nobody uses it, therefore nobody attacks it, therefore nobody cares!

BTW, thanks for the entertainment, it was fun to read.

I do not argue for any idea because "everyone" believes it however, as you noted, I was simply pointing out that money is what matters to (most) businesses. Comparing the amount of money that two competing companies can rake in is a pretty good measure of "who's winning" in any particular market.

What I am saying is just because most people think something works or is good doesn't mean it is.

I agree completely, but I feel misunderstood. I didn't say that when most people thing buy something, then that must be the top of the line one. When most people think something is good, then it's good for the people who think that, or they wouldn't have bought it.

So, don't tell me that a product or an idea, or anything is superior because a large portion of any population believes it so.

There you go again. Please point out where I said that. Just because I said that more companies spend more money on Microsoft than they do the fruity computer, you think that I said one was superior. I may think that (for myself) but that was not my point and I did not say that. All I say is that Microsoft is more succesful where it counts when you're in business.

I agree with the original poster that having a lot of Fortune 500 companies buying your product is a good measure of success, however he might have put it without the insults. We all have a bad day...

Money may not be the center of all value for all people but when a large portion of businesses spend their money on one product over another it usually means one thing: that one product offers them something that the other one doesn't in the way of value.

The Mac is even more proprietary than Windows, since it requires proprietary hardware. People (and businesses especially) like choice. This is because the fact that there exists a choice means that there is competition, which means that prices are not fixed. OTOH, pricing for Apple hardware is fixed.

In the WinTel world, only the Windows software prices are fixed but the hardware as we've seen in recent years is dropped in price due to all the competition. Besides that, for big operations, PPC chips couldn't hold a candle to some of the multi-processor configurations of x86 cpu. I know you can do dual proc w/ PPC, but you can do up to 8-way with x86 and PPC was late to the game with it anyway.

One last thing until recently there was nothing easy like VB (and all it's 3rd party components and tools) to develop apps for the Mac. Now there is RealBasic, but you still don't have a 5 billion dollar/year component industry catering to RealBasic developers.

I can tell you first hand that business owners want stuff yesterday and there's nothing like VB on any other platform to satisfy those needs. (Python my a$$, where are all the components??) It's all about ease of use *and* availability of solutions. The article says more solutions for Linux are now available, but the water's still a little murky. For me and my biz, we'll stick with Windows (for now).

The thing that really ticks me off is that no manufacturer really takes it all the way. Not even Apple, they just come the closest. I mean, how can it be that nobody came up with the idea of a *bigger* LCD (iPod had the biggest when it first came out...not sure now). Why do so many players have only buttons and no dial-like apparatus? Why can hardly any of them record? How about a mini speaker on the outside so a group could listen to something funny (or you could annoy someone :)

There are so many possible features that you could add to an MP3 player and the only one that seem to come close is the iPod. The world isn't perfect I guess.

I agree that it shouldn't be free to get music online but you *should* be able to get it online. Lots of record companies don't really let you without charging you monthly fees.

Apple's got the right idea. Of course when they come out with the Windows version it'll probably be crappy just so they can trumpet how much better the Mac is. Same thing they did with the iPod until a 3rd party (MediaPlay) came out with something that actually worked right (XPlay).

The point: until I can get *all* the tracks I want (from whichever label) on whichever platform I want, there's still P2P and luckily, it's free :)
