Trying to use MSN Messenger (for example) inside our organization allows connections to the outside world.
In fact MSN messenger is the only popular IM software that you can use in a LAN. Though to get it working you will need to have MS Exchange 2000. I had this set up at my earlier organizaion, and we cud connect to both the msn internet servers and to our local exchange servers. And in our company, we used to use MS exchange only for this feature!
I think if any of the PC manufacturers ever grew some balls (or got desperate enough) and sued Microsoft for predatory pricing/illegal practices, they would have the best chance of all of winning a shitload of damages. Unfortunately, Microsoft would be able to drive any big manufacturer completely out of business before they could win in court.
But what if the company that sues microsoft does not depend on MS Windows to sell their computers. Say any of the Linux computer sellers, who might wan't to include windows in some of their desktops, or even perhaps sell computers which have both Linux & Windows Pre installed
Note that the paper indicates they were originally planning on selling the viewers. I'll bet there is an internal political story there.
In fact, Adobe initially used to sell the Acrobat Reader software for something like $99. I don't remember the exact ammount, but there was a charge. This was changed in the later versions of Acrobat Reader.
In fact the initial target market for Acrobat was internal corporate documentation in a mixed computing environment. It was only later that Adobe decided to give out the Acrobat Reader for free and turned PDF into what it is today
In fact edonkey available at www.edonkey2000.com also has a few anti freeloading features. One of them is that it divides any file that you download into chunks. As and when you hav a complete chunk, it is automatically shared. This is one really good feature, with a few surprizes. This spreads the files faster on the network, and anyone who is downloading the file automatically becomes a distribution point for that file till it is completely downloaded. Another neat feature that i really like in edonkey is that if u put limits on the upload speed, then depending on the speed your download speed is also limited. This is one feature that i really like. And these 2 features combined makes the edonkey network really good for large files.
This reminds me of a site I once visited. In that site I tried to search for somehting and the first result of the search was the admin page for the site. Just to have some fun I clicked on the link, and to my surprise the admin page came up withought asking any passwords and allowed me to do lots of intresting site admin things.
That's the main problem right now with Linux, it's just not that easy to get everything up and running.
This is intresting. With my hardware, i have had better success running linux than running win2k. With linux, i just pop in a cd, install the os, do a reboot, and everything is working. With win2k i have to install it first, then update all the drivers to the latest one, and after 5-10 reboots the system is up and running.
The real problem that i faced with win2k was that after i did a motherboard upgrade, win2k would not boot, and i had to reinstall win2k. With linux i just had to boot into linux and things just worked.
This is a total myth that windows has better hardware support. With my hardware, i have found that linux is easier to use!!
When I hear about devices like this one it really makes me wonder how hard it would be to recreate one of your own
I already use my athlon 1ghz to do something similar to what this device does. The only thing that i miss is that i don't get to run linux apps to do this, and that over here in India, we don't have any programming support available for the software that i use. I typically use power vcr 3.0. My tv tuner card is a cheap pci card.
try doing an install of win2k on a modern computer and you will figure out that to get the system to a working level with all the drivers and common software, you will have to reboot the system way too many times.. and this thing gets realy frustating after the 3rd or the 4th reboot. I have been using linux for a long time, so i guess i have never had problems with compiling the kernel (and with most of today's distros you don't even hav to do that) And if u do happen to need any 3rd party drivers, mostly u don't have to reboot a linux box. I use both linux and windows. To set up a linux box, it takes me 1-2 hours max. To set up a win2k box it takes me a whole day. And for me a day lost to reinstalling an os is a big thing. And to do that after a motherboard upgrade is a real brain dead thing. Even win98 doesn't require a reinstall if u change the ide controller. And with mandrake 8.0 i didn't even need a reboot. I feel that if linux had a good web browser (and though mozilla is getting there fast, it is still not there), and a decent icq clone i wud switch to linux as my primary desktop.
Who says that windows is better at detecting hardware than mandrake. At least for my case i found that after a motherboard upgrade, mandrake 8.0 detected the new motherboard and installed all the relevent drivers for me (sound, usb). I also hav win2k on another partition and i had to reinstall win2k after the hardware upgrade. This fud about windows being more hardware friendly has to end. Install windows first, and then go thru countless reboots to get all the drivers in place. It is just plain stupid. For any linux distro u just need to do 1 reboot (if you recompile the kernel) and things start working after that.
the same amount of music (which happens to be almost no purchases) i hav almost always copied my music from friends! For me napster was a real convinience!!!
The funny part is that in looking at the specifications for this product, I don't see that it will run applications designed for Win9x. Maybe I'm missing something here, but it looks like this runs DOS, Windows 16-bit, and OS/2 16- and 32-bit applications. All well and good, but I've got a lot of money invested in my 32-bit Windows applications, now, and even the availability of StarOffice for this platform isn't going to entice me into converting.
Actually the reason why OS/2 supports Win 3.1 apps, and doesn't support Win 95 apps is quite simple. When IBM and M$ initially developed OS/2, there was an agreement between IBM and M$ which gave IBM access to Windows codebase. This agreement ran out before Win 95 was released!
Well actualy India already has the capablity to launch spy sattelites. You will never launch a spy satellite into the geosynchronous orbits, they are normally launched into the polar earth orbit, which is something india can do for some time now. Also the indian remote sensing sattelites can be used as old generation spy satellites. They hav 5m optical resolution!
'Side, the GSLV is also in the same general area as creating ICBMs.
Nothing is farther from the truth. These GSLVs use cryogenic fuel, which makes it very difficult to launch them at a short notice. Most of the ICBMs use liquid or solid fuel. It takes a long time to fuel one of these rockets, and once fueled they are extremely dangerous to store!
