You forgot about the acid in the atmosphere or the corrosive ground. You couldn't live on the surface. Even probes can't stand the surface for any length of time.
You'd have to live in some bioshock infinite balloon habitation. That poses a whole other set of problems that honestly is more extreme than living on mars or the moon.
On mars you can at least build habitation 20 feet below the surface and be protected from cosmic radiation. Ditto with the moon. Hell there might be lava tubes on the moon which is the perfect place to set up some permanent residence. There's water on both, explain how any of that works on venus living in some floating bubble?

    Actually... you would need both.
Gravity to keep an atmosphere is easy. Hell even pluto has a detectable atmosphere even though it's smaller than the moon.
Solar winds do strip atmosphere and over time will leave you like mars of the moon.

  18. Re:Are drones really THAT dangerous? on California Legislation May Allow First Responders To Take Out Drones · · Score: -1, Troll

I really hate these what if scenarios. Has anything like that ever happened? And if not, what are the reasonable expectations that it could happen in the future?
All of this drone nonsense is just hyperbole to the extreme. I have never heard of a drone colliding with a helicopter. Also because airspace below a certain altitude is public space where one can fly such a drone legally, it's kind of a grey area as when not to fly drones in that space.
Emergency services are all fine and dandy, but i have seen video of firefighters purposely trying to knock down a drone that's flying a good 100+ft away from them with a pressurized hose for no good reason.
Either you make it illegal and propose fines for people flying drones in restricted airspace (and you better damn well have a way of communicating when and where a restricted airspace is) or you suck it up and figure out a way to keep your personnel safe.
You do not allow people to arbitrarily destroy private property.

Or you could put a switch which energizes the outlet.
Or put the outlet on a timer in which it's only energized when the cleaning crew is scheduled to use it.
There are literally hundreds of easy to do schemes which don't rely on the kindness of people to function correctly.
I am not a lawyer, but it kind of sounds like the law he was charged with (or accused of) was really meant to stop people from stealing service for their entire household by installing a faulty meter or some sort of meter bypass device. It wasn't meant to stop people from using cents of electricity. Unless of course up to 5 years sounds like a reasonable punishment for that kind of crime.

  22. why is this even a thing? on Apple Will Pay More To Streaming Music Producers Than Spotify -- But Not Yet · · Score: 2

Seriously, who cares? Poor starving artists don't get paid? Then they should sign for better royalty rates. Spotify/apple/pandora does not set the rates which artists get paid. That's all up to the record labels and the artists who have contracts. There's the whole other mess associated with the government approved collection agencies which only gives money to member artists. If you create something and it's played seldomly and it's not part of any big label, then fat chance you'll see even a penny.
The idea isn't to give starving artists any extra money, it's to give the copyright holders even more cash through streaming.
