You know when you talk about it that way it sounds like the MPAA/DVD-CCA/whoever need to be brought up on racketeering charges. Its like they sell you a product but then you have to pay them for a license to use your product.
Hi. This seems as good a place as any to mention it, as it seems to be a bug with X4. Has anyone else (I am using Debian unstable), after upgrading from X3 -> X4 noticed that all their fonts got bigger? GnomeICU for example, runs a little thing in the panel and the # of users online no longer fits if it is a two digit number. NUMEROUS Gnome, nay, X apps in general, seem designed as if they were expecting a certain font size, and now fonts run off the screen, or buttons are too big, and all manner of screwups. And I have -no-idea- why its happening. Is it simply the new font renderer or has my configuration changed?
If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know. Talk amongst yuhselvs.
Netscape REALLY dropped the ball with NS6 -- at least on linux ; I haven't tried other plats.
But anyway, when someone uses any kind of plugin, esp shockwave or one for MIDI "music", NS6 just sucks. It keeps popping up little boxes asking if you want to auto-download the plugin (which of course isn't available). But the stupid part? THE GUI FREEZES UNTIL YOU CLICK OK OR CANCEL. And sometimes more than one box pops up at the same time and you have to figure out which one to click first.
If you don't believe me, try:
http://www.tuneinn.com/
and wait a few.
Or WORSE, try
http://www.bluemountain.com/
Try to send a card with midi music on it. It pops up that damn box EVERYTIME you enter a new character in one of the text boxes.
I mean it's just plain ridiculous. I won't even go into the ugly UI or slowness issues here. Sad to see that IE is *truly* the faster and superior browser.
Guess what -- Any company can choose to increase the number of shares outstanding but taking a simple vote at a board meeting. The shares aren't actually "printed" but they sure as hell are authorized, and yes, you CAN do that.

I'll give you some slack when you say cocaine et al. aren't as highly-addictive as the anti-drug people make them out to be, but if you think ANYONE can casually use Heroin, think again. I suggest you take some biochemistry, pharmacology, and chemical-physiology classes before again making that assertion.
I do remeber reading that as a link of/... truly fascinating. I remeber them saying that it must have worked because of the way it evolved, MINISCULE electrical and magnetic fields created between the tiny tiny branches inside the FPGA could influence the current flow on other circuit pathways and other bizzare things that had never been seen before in human-designed Integrated Circuits.
Amazing stuff. Makes me wonder If i shouldnt be majoring in economics and math, but Engineering -- always my true love.;)
I can get the telemetry data to display and the Java applet worksb ut I do not get any video. I get a message "Handler for MIME type text/plain not found" or something really similar. What gives?:(
Had no desire or curiosity to fix or wonder what that message was till now (seen it before)
I am a full-time university student studying Finance, Economics, and Mathematics. As such, I do a lot of statistics work for classes. I recently had a class where we had a large number of homework assignments that involved computing statistics at home with a spreadsheet (rather than in class in a computer lab).
Excel has a number of data-analysis functions which are sadly unavailable in StarOffice (an otherwise great suite), such as Z and T tests, Correlation Matrices, ANOVA, and Regression calculation.
LUCKILY Gnumeric has many of these functions (although they are not _quite_ as robust as the Excel versions and a few [such as Two-Factor ANOVA with Replication] are missing entirely).
Luckily I was able to complete 95% of the homework assignments in Linux (going to a computer lab to do the remaining ones on Excel) using Gnumeric, but before reccommending that an entire office--including people who will need to do statistical work--switch to StarOffice, please make sure you explore all the possible functions of Microsoft Office components which need to be replicated
(Actually everything else seems fine in the Linux arena from a number of offerings including StarOffice, Gnome Office, KOffice, etc., except the Excel clones...)
You said that microsoft hasn't done anything illegal. I disagree.
BUT EVEN IF THEY HAVEN'T: Under the antitrust laws of the United States, entirely legal actionwhen performed by a monopoly, become illegal if they are done to unfairly maintain the monopoly.
Perhaps I'm just behind the times, but when I was a kid, I always learned that to get a patent you had to already have a working model--which doesn't necessarily invalidate some software patents: write some one-click software, get a patent for exaample (and don't respond re: this point please, thats just an example).
But lets say I have some great idea for, oh, e-commerce for example. Can I just patent it, then write the software later (regardless of whether or not we agree with software patents) ??
I thought the USPTO *still* required that the claims in question refer to a device/process which *ALREADY EXISTS* ??
Hell if not I've got 10 ideas right now I'll file patents for. Of course so does everyone else. Which makes patents ridulously pointless.
Did they remove this requirement or just not enforce it? If they've removed it, why hasn't everyone gone hog wild patenting ideas like they do in Japan (IIRC) ?
Acutally this was mostly a joke, don't take it as a personal attack, i can respect your beliefs as long as you respect my love for a breakfast of sausage, bacon, eggs, and milk.
That guy was RIGHT, you DO sound like that perky intern from dilbert. What heaven's name does "Are you one of those computer users that feels 'powerful and excited' when using a computer?" have to do with the subject at hand? NOTHING.
If you had an inferential skills whatsoever, you'd note that the article had nothing to do with free PCs, but the/. article poster was making a comment in not-so-many-words that this "checking up" would be even easier on a free PC the company gave you, as they could load it with monitoring software.
Read post. Read article. Note that there is no mention of free pc's in article. Conclude that it must be an editorial comment by the/. staff. Close mouth.
You should put some of those funds you have lying around to good work and take out a full-page ad in the New York Times detailing the situation for the general public. Explain that the monster corporation (joe blow dislikes corporate bullies as much as we do) is trying to take away THEIR right to watch DVDs that THEY OWN. Outline the facts in an easy to read format. Easy enough for simple-minded journalists minds, even =)
If slashdot and andover don't want to spend the funds for the ad(s! find other major media!) but would be willing to donate ADMINISTATIVE HELP, putting together a fund would be most useful. I for one would send in my $10 to pay for a television spot or a newspaper ad.
>Will this soon be happening with state-based licensing of lawyers, doctors, etc.? Ha, I hope I am mis-understanding you, because if you're saying "what if the states suddenly start licensing doctors" I've got news for you, they are licensed by a state medical board. You must posess a license from that state to practice medicine in a particular state. James
I've seen quite a few posts by you under this thread and you are simply continuing to rationalize your theft of other people's creative material with ridiculous arguments.
Let me preface this by saying I do not work for the pharmaceutical industry. No one in my family works in that industry. I am a POOR COLLEGE STUDENT. And now on with my way-too-long-retort.
debrain said: > Any prescriptions lately? Do you think medicine really cost that much? Not according to the pharmacutical companies that just submitted to charges of collusion.
And to that I say: Do you know WHY drug companies charge so much for their drugs? So they can fill their coffers. Oh how evil you say, to want to put money in the corporate bank account! But (admittedly unlike some other large corporations in other industries) do you know what drug companies *DO* with all this money they make from selling drugs at a very high price?
R - E - S - E - A - R - C - H
Researching, developing, testing, and getting drugs approved is a long, EXPENSIVE process. For every drug that makes it to the market, a drug company has test a dozen or more other candidates, at a large expense, both of time and capital (human and monetary).
Please do not argue subjects about which you are not educated. Take a pharmacoeconomics course and then tell me that you don't think that "medicine really cost that much".
Please note that I am not angry nor is this intended as a flame, sorry if I get worked up sometimes, but it bothers me to see people make statements regarding subjects on which they have not been educated (e.g. pharmaceutical industry, economics) but especially when they are trying to rationalize their disdain of anyone with more money than them (just in this thread you've expressed your dislike for both the movie industry and the pharmaceutical industry. I'm sure you feel you should be able to copy the "medicine" (drugs) freely just like you feel you should be able to copy Movies and like you currently illegally copy and distribute MP3s.
I hope this post has been educational to you RE: the drug industry and that you have no hard feelings towards me. I understand that you have an opinion and, while I do not agree with it, I respect it, I hope you feel the same way about me.
You know when you talk about it that way it sounds like the MPAA/DVD-CCA/whoever need to be brought up on racketeering charges. Its like they sell you a product but then you have to pay them for a license to use your product.
Yeah we can protect you, for a fee.
huh?
Yeah about time I updated from my 1980s(?) X4 to X11 eh? No just kidding thanks I'll make sure to type the extra 6 keystrokes "free86" next time :)

The correct expression is "Revolutions per minute" not "Rotations per minute".

You're talking about post-WWI events and you mention
