  1. I'm surprised no one mentioned this sooner on The Troubles With the Yahool Mail Beta · · Score: 1

I signed up for Yahoo mail beta along time ago, and then switched back. The interface was slow and clunky. I had no problems other than that, but I could not find out WHERE to submit any feedback.

So far, I have not seen any Web/Java apps that are worth anything. People keep making them, so, maybe it's ME???....

  2. Doppler shift on JetBlue to Offer WiFi · · Score: 1, Funny

You would probably need special software to compensate of the doppler shift caused by the motion of the plane, depending on whether the WAP was in the front or back of the plane.

Uhhh, the economy is still flat!!

But for these morons, they prefer to scapegoat P2P, not their ridiculously expensive pricing, or stagnant artist syndrome. Irregardless of whether P2P existed or not, their model just don't work no more.

I'm making 60% of what I did four years ago, and I still have the same house note - oh wait I re-fied to pay the mortgage...

  9. Yahoo's too busy responding to my posts on Yahoo and Hotmail Filter Flaw · · Score: 2, Funny

They are obviously diligently searching for the clowns who keep sending me requests from "Yahoo" and "Citibank" to put in my account information, on websites hosted in Russia and Korea.

  10. How to talk to executives on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 1

This is something I've dealt with for a long time, and have had a bit of success. After getting entrenched in a company, becoming very familiar with the politics of the place, it is always hard to take a step back, and present yourself objectively.

This gap in communications between tech people and company execs is obvious. Clearly we're made from different molds.

    1. I put on my "game face" and pretend to be happy, even if I'm not.
    2. I always keep a "can do" attitude, even if I believe the future is filled with doom.
    3. They hate only hearing about problems. If I bring up a problem, they want to hear a solution.
    4. If I have no solution, I say, "I think this is something we could all work on to come up with a solution on". They eat up the "teamwork" angle.

Usually, I feel like a whore afterwards, but shoot, I get better results.

  11. LDAP on Cross-platform Password Management? · · Score: 1

  12. Bull-whacky!! on The Post 9/11 Tech Boom · · Score: 1

Then why can't I get a friggin job?? I've been unemployed since November... I have four years Unix Admin experience, and the recruiters still won't return my calls.

I agree with the ideas that a tech boom will return. Even without the need for increased security, it's just the way our society is currently moving.

But thinking that there's no problem with the unemployment rate being over 7.5 (average) for the Bay Area is ridiculous!!

  13. The DNS hack only worked for a few minutes on Some People @Home, Some Not @Home · · Score: 1

When I woke up this morning at 8:00am PST, The "Cable" light on my cable modem was still lit. I could ping the default gateway, but DNS was obviously dead.

I used a previous employers DNS server but that only worked for a little while.

Now the "cable" light is dead. I imagine many other will soon see this, as they continue to disconnect equipment throughout the day. I got a phone call from a machine at AT&T, that said they expect to be back up within a week (AAAGGGHH). They will credit 2 days off my bill for every 1 day of lost service.

Luckily, I setup a little NetZero account last night. I bought the premium, only cuz I hate that advertising crap. Besides, I'll get the $9.95 back after the double credit I'm getting from AT&T.

I hate having to use this old Modulator/Demodulator, but it'll do. So far, I'm pretty impressed with the service.

My Modem's so old, it's still labeled "US Robotics".

  14. How much money do they think we have? on Why Won't You Pay for Content? · · Score: 1

After buying the computer, the OS (yeah, I know), misc software packages, plus ISP fees I've racked up quite a bill. Now I have to *keep paying* while I use it? Personally, I don't care about fairness to their business model because I'm getting tapped. Plus, I have about 20 bills to keep track of every month. Another $20 "subscription" here, $20 there, adds up really quickly, and compounds my problem.

  15. I just lost this battle myself on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 1

I was in a similar boat myself, with a fully functional sendmail system. My new CIO basically forced it down our throats, despite weeks of arguing and debating. It was ridiculous - he kept inisting that this was a viable soultion, all the while various .vbs script virii were hitting us almost weekly (as you know, MS Outlook is the easiest, and therefore prime target for such attacks). I'm the junior sys admin here, and both my senior admin and myself presented him with TONS of stuff to argue against it. What the CIO basically did was stack the deck against us by creating requirements that could only be met my a MS Exchange/Outlook deployment. The key features we lost on were centralized addressbooks, calendaring, and centralized user management (Domain authentication). That's it. We showed him how we could create this functionality via centralized web interfaces and LDAP. His argument was that any other solutions would need to be "jerry-rigged", and that Exchange/Outlook has everything "out of the box". Unfortunately, he makes a great point. If there is a centralized messaging solution from our side of the fence, I couldn't find it. I wish I could have come up with better alternatives to counter his argument. The office suites and messaging suites are where Linux needs to improve upon if they want a shot at the desktop. There's a strange movement out there amongst executives that just accept the NT solutions, despite all the reliability, security, and scalability issues that Microsft lacks in. There's something we arent doing right on the Unix/Linux side, and I hate to say it's marketing (cuz' that's where Microsoft spanks us). You have a tough fight on your hands. Try these places I looked at for evidence: Unix vs. NT Organization http://www.unix-vs-nt.org/ Anti Microsoft Organization http://users.aol.com/machcu/amsa.html I also searched Google for "Sendmail vs. Exhange" and came up with alot. Good luck.
