    What I'd really like to see is a goal-free 3D world like the Snowcrash Metaverse, but it will take games to get there ;)

    it would be possible to create something like that on a local area network. The only real limitation to making it global would be bandwidth. I mean it would just be a really really huge game level, with only a small part of it visibly at once. It wouldn't surprise me to see something like that in two or three years. Imagine being able to let 'your piece' do your aguring in the chat room over which level to play! Where do I sign up??

    For those few slashdotters living in southeast alaska, there's an excellent government surplus at the Subport here in Juneau. It's open every wednesday from 9am to 3pm. They have everything from coastguard uniforms to UPSs to rader guns to office furniture to servers to workstations to hubs/switches. Also a great source of paper weights 8)

    Considering that my ISP charges $20/gig downloaded, I've spent maybe $60 on windows and $40 on linux. Oh wait...you mean actually BUY it??

    I think you're confusing communism with stalinism. Communism is an economic system in which all property is shared, and everyone has equal status. And yes, the napster system was very close to communism, in the sense that everyone was equal in terms of privilages and access to music. Bandwidth and storage were an exception of course.

    At some point, each of us has hated the US legal system and the evils it produces. Then you see something brilliant, simple, and reasonable like this and it all seems worth it. Maybe. :^)

    Worth it to the hundreds of lawyers who will be further enriched by all the new disputes this will generate.

    What I find interesting is Schumer was formerly a skeptic of the government's antitrust case against Microsoft, perhaps he has seen the light.

    Looking back on Judge Jackon's comments, I wouldn't hold it against Shumer for being skeptical. Face it: the guy was either extremely biased against M$; or he was extremely biased FOR M$ and thought that he could get them off scott free. Either way, he did, at least for the for the time being. If Shumer succedes, it'll be interesting. I doubt he will though; he has too much stacked against him. Like the whitehouse, just under half the senate, a few battalions of lobbyists, etc. At any rate, I wish him luck. Sooner or later one of Microsofts enemies will take it down. mmm...something to look forward to.

    If you have the bucks, this would make an excelent theft prevention device for a rack! Just cement the bottom to your basement floor! Or for a structural integrity test load, up several 4u cases with cement and see how many it would take to break it.

    Or you could have a decoy rack with a couple of 1u cement boxes for bait....the possiblities are endless!

    Instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to a contractor to develope a decrypting app for them, the FBI buys one on the open market. While they can't seem to keep track of laptops or firearms, at least they seem to show at least a little bit of common sense when it comes to purchasing tools. Nothing like seeing my tax going to support free enterprise.

    I've personally won a number of awards at local and state fair with my flash and photoshop art. It really depends on who's doing the judging. I think that you'll find that many professional art critics are either traditionalists, or have their heads up their ass, kind of like movie critics. I think that your work will be judged more fairly if real artists are looking at it your work; but that's just my experiance. Computer art is as different in terms of the processes that create it, as say, carving vs pottery or painting. My guess is that eventually computer art will be accepted by the mainstream, but not for a while. LIke at least a decade. Call it a hunch.

    Given the problems they've been having the the PPC, the alpha might be a viable alturnative. I'm not talking about switching over to it instantly, but over a couple of years phasing out the G3 and G4s. There won't be a 64-bit PPC processor for at LEAST a couple of years. If they were to buy it within the next couple of months and start selling alpha systems about year for now, the mac community will be used to the bugs and changes from OS X that it won't make a difference. Too bad it won't ever happen...or maybe not?
