Copy protection (noun). A class of methods for preventing incompetent pirates from stealing software and legitimate customers from using it. Considered silly.
somebody should cut the melons up into squares Go down the local supermarket. Buy a nice big watermellon, and cut it into a cube. pick it up, and put it in your 'fridge. Buy a small one, and do the same thing, except put the little cube in your pocket.
who are the idiot's paying a 300%+ Markup for these things anyway? It's fad thing, but to humor you, the same kind of idiot who buys $10000 sex dolls(I forget the link).
...In perhaps the first time in US history a group of six teenagers aged 17-19 were arrested for reckless endangerment, homacide, vehicular mansloughter, and 225 counts of capital murder. They were reportadly playing the game 'Carmegeddeon 2: Carpolapypse Now' and thought it would be "more fun" to play it on downtown streets. They reportadly attached touch sensors to their cars 'to record kills', that is, hitting pedestrians. This is possibly the worst case of violence resulting from 'mobile LAN parties' that use modified car computers and advanced wireless communications systems to connect drivers and vehicals. According to one of the participants, who wished to remain anonymous, "The detail levels were inspirationally realistic! It was even better than on my 61 inch plasma screen. He mentioned that his "next project is to build some realistic Quake III weapons and have my very own backyard fragfest."
Anchorperson: Mr. Katz, what is your take on this?
Jon Katz: Well, I have to admire the inginuity of these kids, and after all, they were running their server off of Red Hat linux. In addition, they killed at least two satanistic Microsoft employees, which could be considered a public service...

And that it often doesn't matter, since even the professional associations don't have the weight to throw around that large industry does.
ABA==Professional Association
Though I don't have any statistics on it, my guess is that the ABA represents more money and more 'political capital' than many industry organizations. The ABA is the industry association for lawyers. Every time a president goes throug the selection process for a supreme court justice, the candates have to get reviewed by the ABA. To even practice law, you have to pass an ABA exam. The ABA is probably one of the most powerfull organizations in the USA. If they want something, they get it. Period.

The question is whether hearing that difference is worth $139,000. Circuit City is now carrying some pretty fine gear for less than $1,000, no air bladder required. With money you didn't spend on a Campbell-quality stereo, you could buy about 8,300 compact discs.
Yeah..but imagine how many mp3s I could download on that budget. That's enough to buy a T3 line for a year, and maybe a hundred cheap ATA hardrives. I think more people would be impressed if I had a 6 Terrabyte SAN in my bedroom than if I had one of those sound systems. While i'm stil dreaming I'd also buy a Sun E10000 and a....ok, I digress:)
Microsoft has battled back to the top of the Internet heap,
with more heavy-duty products coming to market this year
than ever before, profits soaring again, and more research
and development money in the bank than most of the world's nations can ever
get their hands on, not to mention Microsoft's many out-maneuvered
competitors.
No company has ever
dominated so enormous a part of the country's economy as Microsoft is about
to do. Are you SURE of that??

Curious though why it only offers Windows CE and Linux, and not the full blown version of Windows.
It has 32 mb RAM and 16mb of FLASH. It'd run windows about as well as a wad of thermite in my propane tank. Sheesh.
All kidding aside, if you hooked up an external USB hardrive to it, it might run windows off of that. Then it would suck like Billg and Jenna Bush on an illigitimate date. Why waste a perfectly good device with windows?
This would make an awsome router if there were some way to give it network connectivity. A few thoughts for it's potential use DNS Server Modular switch router Firewall VLAN bridge Print server etc
that is, assuming you or your.org can afford it. maybe if they dropped the price by $395 I'd even buy one.

Karma Pimp is opening a new Karma Brothel, and is seeking to hire between seven and ten Karma Whores. Prior experiance prefered, but not mandatory; will train person(s) who express the right degree of enthusiasm. All applicants must demonstrate a professional attitude, and be people oriented. Must also pass mandatory drug, M$, and STDs test. Call FE-9D-FFAA during normal working hours.
I guess that the next logical step for these groups would be to claim that the laws are trade secrets and regulate knowledge of them in a similiar fashion. I can't beleive we (USA) have sunk this low.
This Markoff guy is scary. According to Kevin Mitnick's interview with forbes he
almost single handedly
created the "Mitnick hacker legend". I always thought that yellow journalism was something to rant about in American history class. I guess that was just practice for real life.
Isn't Sony one of the companies that is pushing for copy prevention hardrives? Last I checked they own a large recording company AND they have a piece of the movie industry. In other words they control a large chunk of both the MPAA and RIAA.
They have a huge stake in preventing DVDs from being copied, and the current music monopoly suites them just fine. Every single non-cd audio device they have come out with incorperates some kind of copy-prevention.
It's quite surprising how short the memory of this group can be. maskirovka
that it is not legal to keep you on call without pay as you describe, though the law may vary from state to state. On the other hand if you're working for a fortune 100 it might not matter if it's legal or not; they make many of the laws.
Three thousand (give or take) miles per gallon - now if only my CAR would be that efficient!
Yeah, but then the gas monopoly(s) would just sell gas at $300/gallon.
On the upside this would be better on the atmosphere.
When I wired my house, the biggest screw-up I made was running much of the wiring stabled on the outside walls. At the time this seemed like a good idea. It actually worked for a couple of days, and then started to slow down and eventually fail. I also had problems in the winter with snow sliding off the roof and ripping the cable off. I have just redone most of the network indoors. Needless to say, I'd hate to see someone else go through the pain and suffering I've experianced. No high speed pr0n downloads. No video confrencing. No network gaming. I still have nightmares about it to this day. *wimper*
Seriously. Rent a place, get a good cateror, and invite journalists and the like. Have lots of food, good entertainment (like a local band) and lots of company propganda. Have all your employees there to mix and mingle and talk/boast about how cool your company is. Everyone will have a good time, and the journalists will go away with a good impression. That way when you send them information or whatever they'll be more receptive to it. just my two cents.
I can't for the life of me find any good, in-depth info on Soviet and/or Japanese WW2 technology. My 10 page first draft is due tuesday...so feel free to contribute 8)
...but wouldn't it be easier if you just collected the GPS coordinants of each base station in an online database? Now combine that with a gps equiped handheld...hey maybe someone could start an open wirless project. But then again I'm pobly just dreaming.
