    Don't forget that in most european countries (or at least some like BE,CH,IT) , (copyrighted) file downloading is legit while uploading is forbidden. Even the 'local' RIAAs (e.g. IFPI) recongnizes it and send threatening letters to peoples which allow uploads, specifically telling it so ...

    yep, but for us, small countries citizens, 1 hour travel is pretty far away !

    I used to live 50 km (30') south from Brussels and it's considered as far from it ... remember that if you drive > 1-2h in any directions you're out of the country ;)

    if it's anywhere near my experience of university, thinking around this topic (what you really learn at school) bring me to the following point (been working for 3 years) :

    You really know what bring you interesting things at school once you're out.

    With 2 corollaries
    - usually, you missed some great opportunities (for me, learning dutch)
    - it's the opposite of what you think is interesting when you are at school

    and of course, the most valuable things learned during your education are everything which are not academic (social, student jobs, internship).

    anyway, this was my experience ...

    and last fun fact, my tuition was exactly the same ... in BEF (don't exist anymore, was around 1/40 US$)

    If the distro change bothers you, I switched from (mainly) redhat to (mainly) suse when I took my first job (due to geographical distribution) without any problems. Few files are different.

    Now, for the blind-* stuff, I really don't know.

    I just set up a text to speech with festival + mbrola, but that was "for the fun", not for real use. It was quite easy anyway.

    SuSE has also pretty decent support when you buy it.

    You stated in you question that you found info and in fact, even the install program seems to be blind-friendly (it always look for braille display)

    later things you talked about is a 'heat pump' which basically transfer 'heat energy' (cannot find back the english term) from the house to outside (and opposite)

    It doens't matter which one is hotter and which one you want to warm. Has much better efficiency than most other heating/cooling method (execpt burning fossils). Cost a lot to install. Need to have a house. Last longer. Very eco-friendly.

    Made a quick look troughout the comments and didn't find any reference, but common laws within the EU (was it Rome treaty), imposes that you can't refuse to sell something to someone if you are selling it to other peoples. No matter which countries you are in...

    So normally, he can easily force the distributors to sell him some movies ...

    of course IANAL, but that's one of the reason why things here (CH) are always more expensive then everywhere around.

    And my mother is using it, in its 90 flavor, daily (she's a scientist). I'll even probably build a (home-made) distributed platform for it in the next months or so...

    "Indersill" instead of "Intersil" really shows the journalist's knowledge of the wireless lan hardware manufacturers. Even google knows better.

    well, I think I'll stick with my actual RAM and settings because what I really don't want is a 747 full of DVDs to score onto my flat.

    Now, if you're talking about a flying saucer DVD, that's another think, but you've got to be pretty precise when it comes to direct landing in the slot-in dvd reader.

    Of course, in this case (which is a poor analogy) there should be some other hard facts. But when it's about a sysadmin repairing another persons' workstation, then anyone of the two could have put the pictures there.

    Maybe a level under what you're asking, but I found that "Mr Tompkins in Wonderland" very useful for general understanding, which I found more important than the math beneath. Maybe a bit old-fashioned, but worth it.

    No exactly. They just want more money. They don't care about the albums.

    Can't find the site back, but numbers showed that numbers of albums decreased, and, even when sales decrease, money gained by albums went up from around 350US$ in the beginning of the '90 to more than 500 kUS$ now.

    Yeah, right but,

    in Belgium, the patent law mandates that the patent should be used for profit. Otherwise, a special commision can enforce the patent owner to gave license and fix the cost of the licenses. This commission is also responsible to verify other safeguards built in the patent law such as the one you quoted.

    It never met, since 30 years that this law is in place.
