Well, the point is that the copyright law I (was suppose to) studied at school stated that 'copies made for private use' are allowed.
And the problem is what is private use. And I can't find anything which state that copying something from kazaa is illegal. When napster was hot, IFPI menaced (email, letters) against people sharing stuff, not downloading it... so...
Now, for 'ethical' things, artists should be retributed for their work, of course. But as you stated, ther are a lot of problem with existing bussiness models... talk to any small group about the SABAM.
So, that's currently a very blurry situation where eveything is evolving... let's see what will come. The spirit proposition go into that sense : to find another solution (now, wether it's good or not...).
Wow. Umh. Let's think about this proposition. We (or you, in this case) already have tax on blank CD. They propose to legalize download in exchange of a tax. Well. (too small issue alone to cast my vote anyway)
Now, back to flemish (the few I knew is now mixed with german, shit)...... cool article, but, as you seem well informed, maybe you can answer this question that stay unanswered for me:
"Een kopie maken van een cd die u niet gekocht hebt of gedownloade muziek op cd branden blijft illegaal."
Your new $FAVOURITE_CAR_MAKER was provided with $STANDARD_BRAND tires. You are not able to change them. And, btw, you are only allowed to put $OIL_COMPANY fuel in it.
this is really symptomatic of the whole unix against XXX flamewars.
You can do it like dos just by aliasing rm to 'rm -i', which is default on servers installed at work. However, if, like me, you prefer not to type yes 10000 times, then you can do without.
and that's a very unix-ish way of doing things. Like it or not, that's the point.
Btw, now, in office, if you don't install macro support or help , you are asked everytime that it starts to install it, because, well, the computer thinks you want/need macros.
So, letting the computer helps the human is maybe a good thing. But maybe the first thing to teach him (and the most difficult) would be when to shut his mouth and when to act
Yep. Ok, but that's for 1st level support that kind of stuff.
The bright people that know every in and out of products (they are supporting) usually work at 2nd or 3rd level support, after all the known/simple errors have been filtered and solved using KBs and the like.
disclaimer : I made an internship in technical support of a (huge) network manufacturer, it was at least 2nd level (depending on the area) and all engineers had access to source code, direct link to developpers.
And I don't find it surprising that MS Tech Support don't have access to source code but it also carries lot of drawbacks.
Yep. Exactly. Except that the result of these choices won't depends on my viewpoint, but on what's in their account at the end of the year (for Mandrake, in July).
BTW, generalities apart, SuSE is german and Mandrake is french... one can also wonder wether (or how far) the entreprises culture correlates on the general country culture ??? (and no, this is not flamebait !)
I think I even know that history better than you. This was off the Stanford Campus (not everything come out of Berkeley)... and more that public funded research (that stanford wasn't able to commercialy exploit, btw), the so-called rip off concerned mainly time and hardware used for developping this company while working at stanford.
if you remember the EULA (and IIRC it too;), it should state something like
program is provided "AS IS" withouht warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied of warranties of fitness for a particular purpose.
This extract was for the GPL, but windows has the same (like most software).

Are you REALLY sure that what comes next won't be better ?
maybe a better question would be "Are you REALLY sure that doing nothing is better than trying to change or to replace the actual system ? "
... and, btw, if you are really sure about predicting such complex issues, please share your knowledge and experience with us.

Sound still perfectly reasonable ?

Where's the point of having a support line if the support guys dont 'have access to much more' than the customer ???

Dell didn't dropped linux support, I can still buy dell servers with redhat linux on them (maybe also support, never tried).
Yep, it's ongoing
My (former) university : mbrola
It is even is free (as in beer) for personnal use.
Don't forget that they also pionneered compact discs (incl. recorders) ...

I wouldn't call that a "poor track record".
Of course, you can also talk about DCC

The actual status of Suse and mandrake is a consequence of decisions taken within those two enterprises.
And, IMHO, such decisions are part of the global orientation and general culture of the enterprises.
Do you realize that mandrake did fill for bankrupcy end of last year ?
The native os x client to microsoft exchange server is due by summer 2003, according to microsoft/mac website.
I'm just waiting for that moment to go to my boss and make him swap by current (crap) dell laptop for a powerbook.

A big well known network gear manufacturer has decided to rename itself 'CI'.
Its spokesman stated : 'With those #@$à3 guys there over at SCO, we didn't wanted anymore to have this acronym inside our name, so we just removed it'
