  1. Try FreeBSD for the ports collection on APT - With Your Favorite Distribution · · Score: 2, Interesting

FreeBSD's ports collection minimizes this problem by being one coherent unit. I very rarely find a dependency that isn't automatically downloaded for me when installing a new port. The only downside is that it takes a while for the latest Linux applications to get into the Ports collection. If its something really popular, it gets ported pretry quickly.

  2. Re:AT&T @Home reconnecting (CORRECTED) on Some People @Home, Some Not @Home · · Score: 1

I can attest to Oregon being on line. I was very impressed with my FreeBSD boxes. I'd never used this feature: I just executed /stand/sysinstall and went to the network settings and checked the DHCP box. It did the rest. (of course email had to be changed by hand). Very impressive. Rob.

  3. be careful with CFS as it uses NFS on Seeking Current Info on Linux Encrypted FS? · · Score: 1

I had very good results on FreeBSD with CFS, but I was very aware of the vulnerabilities of running NFS, and made certain to modify my firewall appropriately.

I created an encrypted home directory that was bootstrapped by an almost empty normal home directory. In the last lines of .bash_profile I added some lines to cattach the encrypted directory and then switch me over to the encrypted one. Things like .qmail and .ssh had to go in the unencrypted directory however.

    Have Fun! Rob.

  5. a fast transistor is not the whole story on Gallium Arsenide Semiconductors on the Horizon · · Score: 1

Its important to be able to integrate inductors onto chips in order to reduce component count and to provide a degree of uniformity in consumer designs like Wireless. Unfortunately, having a silicon layer under the GaAs makes for a lousy inductor as it absorbs much of the field. The same problem is true for SiGe. Plain old GaAs is not dead and is getting even more important as lower freq spectrum space is being used up, pushing applications above 4Ghz.

  6. Re:Internet Broadcasting Rights & BBC on Future of Digital Music in Doubt · · Score: 1

The BBC has not cut off English language broadcasts. They may not beam to NA, but here in Oregon I get them on many frequencies. They use a relay in Okichobi, FLA, so it should be audible anywhere in NA.

  7. Re:A bit more background information on The Glories of Red Bull · · Score: 1

Nonsense. Taurine (not Taurin) is an amino acid. If they were going to put in some potentially stimulating amino acid, DL-Phenylethylame would have been a better choice. If you want Taurine, eat some meat or cheese.

  8. Is Freenet a candidate for DMCA protection? on Sauce for the Gander: Aimster Uses DMCA to Its Advantage · · Score: 1

Everthing on Freenet now is encrypted. I wonder if the Aimster actions hold up under scrutiny, whether Freenet may be able to make the same case. In its current incarnation Freenet seems to have a wide variety of material, so music if just one small portion. I regularly use Freenet to distribute source code of my own making and I use FreenetMail for personal communications. Since only I know the key I can privately distribute it to others. It certainly seems to me that unauthorized use and interception of such works would be in violation of the DMCA.

  11. Have run Freenet for a year Now on Is Freenet Vapourware? Ian Clarke Responds · · Score: 2

Vaporware? I've been running a node for almost a year now, on and off. I've been patiently waiting for client applications to emerge, especially music file sharing. There is a reason why I've been patient: I can use Napster or Gnutella NOW. Soon I don't think that will be the case. The legal system will eventually bear down on everyone doing so. All will be forced way underground. Freenet gives one a way to be 'underground' yet still linked to others. Kind of like the .mp3 underground railroad. PGP and anonymous remailers have their place, but interest has waned. The killer app- music, had no use for them. Freenet is waiting.

  13. Slashdot'ers More Mature than I Realized on Tutoring A Child Prodigy? · · Score: 1

I was very impressed by the responses. Slashdot'ers are much more mature than I ever realized. I think there are also alot of us out there who in some way missed out on some of that "normal" childhood. We now realize it, but improving one's socialization when you are 40 is a lot more difficult. (And sometimes I think that sitting around all day behind a keyboard *does not help*)

  15. Great protocol, but not very useful yet on Freenet, Broken Down By Content · · Score: 1

I've been following freenet from near the beginning. I've run a node for quite some time, hoping upon hoping that eventually there would be clients that actually do something useful. I'm currently waiting for the Tropus project to come out with some code. Last I checked, there was nothing substantial being committed. They claim to be working on a music client that will be ready before Christmas. Well, there's only 2 more weeks left before Santa has to comes down the chimney with that killer mp3 app.

  16. OpenBSD on laptop on Ask Theo de Raadt about OpenBSD · · Score: 2

Well, I must be one of the more insane OpenBSD users, since I believe that is the perfect OS for the laptop. My ability to use built in encryption with cfs and tcfs, makes it perfect for storing those company trade secrets, marketing data, sales info. Swap is encrypted as well. The atapiscsi CDR capability for ide is wonderful as well. My question is if you are going to continue to make OpenBSD laptop friendly? Thanks, Rob.

For you hams, this might be a good night for auroral propagation on 6M and above. Earlier in the summer, I contacted people all over the western US by bouncing signals off of the aurora. Too bad it wasn't at night, I bet we would have had a great lights show.
