    Given how Walmart mistreats its employees (forced unpaid overtime, automatic firing for even *thinking* of getting unionized, illegal immigrant janitors making well below minimum wage and locked in the stores at night, etc.)

    What makes you think these things happen any more in Walmart than other retailers (including "Mom & Pop" stores)?

    Maybe you missed the news when Walmart had a class action lawsuit against them for disciminatory behaviour, concerning the lack of women who received promotions. Next time you are in a Walmart take a look at what positions the women usually hold as compared to the men.

    Well the local store has a female store manager and most of the assistants are female as well. Given how big they are I'd be surprised if there wern't problems in at least some stores but it's clearly not a company wide problem.

    The only real argument for putting this together is because it can be done. Which is a good reason in almost any case, this one included, I agree. To pitch a DIY PVR as though it is cheaper and easier than a Tivo is just silly though.

    I agree with the cost part of that especially because none of us know how long guide data will be available for free. On the other hand my wife has no problem using MythTV nor do friends and family. It really is just as easy to use as a Tivo. Also, adding MythMusic and MythVideo makes my MythTV setup far more functional than any Tivo.

    I see. So we should just keep throwing money at defense technology? We spend more on defense per capita than the next top three nations combined- do you realize that includes North Korea, widely considered to be a "military state"?

    All good stuff but even if you consider NASA part of "defense technology" and ignore all of the areas it contributes to it's still only a very tiny fraction of our defense spending. Even cutting NASA completely wouldn't change the stat you quoted at all.

    No, "Open Box" means opened in the store. If the product has been previously sold the correct term is "used".

    Right, assuming they are still willing to sell you the advertised item at the advertised price. If they advertise something they arn't willing to sell that's fraud. I don't know about BB but some stores will intentionally advertise something when they know they only have a handfull in stock. If they have any at all it might not be illegal (if they have a disclaimer saying "limited quantities available etc") but it's certainly skirting the law. If you could prove that they knew they were going to run out then they have probably crossed the line.

    With some devices, I'll take the gamble on the money for the PSP, in 3 years, I have little doubt that my laptop's battery will go and need to be replaced... and right there is the cost of the plan.

    Better check the fine print. It's unlikely that the battery is covered.

    Most USB powered devices that require a lot of power also have a plug for a wall wart. If yours doesn't and really needs that much power I'd return it and get something else. You could also get a USB hub with a wall wart adapter. It would be fairly easy to splice in a battery back if you really need mobile operation.

    In addition, the "dial on demand" functionality never works. You have to manually log in to the web interface, and tell it to connect.

    It's just as well. With all of the worm infested machines out there even if you got it to dial automatically it would never hang up automatically due to the continuous traffic these worms generate.

    Most of the time end user firewalls are installed by the user so they are expecting a change. This service pack is being installed automatically by Windows Update so it's going to take a lot of people by surprise when something that worked yesterday suddenly doesn't.

    On a seperate note, I admin some WinXP boxes remotely and I'm a little concerned that turning off the firewall might be difficult from two states away. I guess I'd better call Verizon and move to a plan with more minutes because it looks like I'll need all I can get this month talking people through this over the phone.

    That doesn't make any sense. Current AMD chips ALLWAYS perform better at the same clock speed. If you really mean that AMD chips with a performance rating (or whatever their calling it this week) similar to the Intel tends to perform a bit worse then that might make some sense. In addition recent Intel and AMD chips won't work in the same motherboards so clearly they didn't just switch the CPUs. They at least switched out the motherboard, cpu and probably memory and got different results.

    How exactly are you running into all these people switching out CPUs for other equivilant CPUs? In practice almost noone does this. Instead people buy a system and keep it for a while then buy something else or upgrade but by then there is almost always something much faster for the same money and they buy that rather than something just like what they already had.

    Why bother with the entire prologue, except that it makes good "press" when written by someone who's now a "journalist".

    Most of those comments were making fun of Endrel's speech. If you havn't read it I can see how PJ's prologue might seem a bit bizzarre.

    #1 Pamela remains *very* uncomfortable with her awkward relationship to OSRM, but doesn't want to talk about it

    What other choice does she have?

    #2 Pamela absolutely will not compromise on "it's my damn blog and I'll censor^W delete posts^W^W run it like I want" despite how it plays to any larger audience outside of Groklaw itself

    Not to state the obvious but it IS her damn blog. BTW this thread would have been removed had it appeared on Groklaw because of the word "damn" and no doubt someone would assume it had been deleted for other reasons.

    #3 there are still a whole bunch of people who are still worked up about these issues; see the Yahoo! Finance SCOX board, where the discussion about all of this continues unabated after a full week since the OSRM study popped up

    No doubt. The position paper and the product being sold by OSRM actually seem pretty reasonable to me but the marketing has been horrible. I had hoped that they would issue a clarification and clean up their marketing act when this first blew up but the longer they let this sit the more it stinks.

    #4 fewer and fewer people are even bothering to try to discuss *any* of this at Groklaw itself, so Pamela's "Groklaw's being attacked" "Groklaw's being attacked" meme is succeeding

    Pretty much everything has already been said.

    I like the logging but I'm not crazy about the warning being turned on by default. One of the problems I run into when supporting others is that Windows spits out so many warnings for trivial things that people get into the habit of just clicking OK without reading the warning at all and as a result they tend to miss the rare important ones. I can't help but think this is going to make the problem worse.

    Maybe I'm strange but I don't see anything wrong with doing any of the things you describe. The only way I'd have a problem with it is if the site was intended to trick people into thinking the site was actually run/endorsed by the "Real" Falwell. There just arn't enough possible (ok practical) domain names for us to be roping off every one that happens to contain a trademarked word. Maybe this whole domain name concept was a big mistake and we should just use IP addresses + search engines.

    There isn't any significant inherent difference in range either (note, lurkers, I said significant), but 2.4 GHz phones tend to be lossier than 900 MHz phones. That is, their power output tends to be lower and their receive sensitive not as good for stuff designed for the same money.

    While it's true that the range should be similar in an open field, 900MHz tends to go through obsticles better.

    Unfortunately ATX12V and EPS12V are different animals. If you want to go with Enermax you'd probably want something like EG651AX-VH(W)FM.

    Check out the pictures of the plugs at the bottom of the page. In particular the main motherboard plug and "ATX12V" plug have additional pins.

    We used the Antec True Power 550EPS. Do yourself a favor and have a spare handy because we fried one during remodeling and no one in town had a replacement. Luckly I was able to move the hard drives etc. into another machine and keep going until a replacement PSU arrived.

    No problems so far. They do require EPS12V PSUs and are physically fairly large but nothing unusual for a dual board. They have been perfectly stable so far. The only issue has been that Linux only sees around 900MB of the 1GB installed. I havn't been worried enough about that to track it down but I've seen it reported by others.

    I havn't tried the dual Athlon boards.
