    I think it's by some kind of vague analogy with the Casimir effect. When you put two plates very close together, only virtual photons with a wavelength that fits between the two plates can exist there; all others are excluded. That makes the virtual photon "pressure" higher on the outside, so the plates push together.

    For some reason I don't understand, this McCulloch guy says the same thing happens Unruh radiation and the observable universe. I don't get it either, since the edge of the observable universe isn't a physical barrier.

    It might be a case of kook vs. kook.

    I had no idea seismology was such a covert field that you can't tell us which "major west coast university" you work at. Are you worried about receiving hate-mail from earthquake deniers?

    The most likely cause of the wave is a low amplitude s-wave moving north from seismic activity...

    ...at the speed of light?

    In the rush to find gravitational waves, it doesn't seem like the other, more plausible explanations have been ruled out.

    Just because they didn't explicitly state "oh, and by the way, it definitely wasn't s-waves, we checked", doesn't mean they haven't done their job. They'd be there forever if they had to list everything it definitely wasn't.

    Gravitational potential energy.

    Look on YouTube. Plenty of videos of buildings collapsing, all with lovely billowy dust clouds.

    No, there are people on YouTube who think they can run a 24fps film through an interpolating filter and get something that's on a par with native 60fps.

    I think I read somewhere that the framerate might have something to do with it as well. Back in CRT days, you were really watching flickery still after still, whereas a modern TV gives a much permanent image, and in some cases it's automatically interpolated to be smoother, as well.

    Not sure if that makes a difference to the mogs and mutts.

    Just watch carefully. I did and noticed way too many incongruous or inconsistent moments.

    For example there's a moment when you see the hoverboard turn to the right with the pilot on top... the pilot literally doesn't move.

    At what timecode? I didn't see any shot were the pilot literally doesn't move. What would you like to do as he flies 20m in the air - wave his arms around, maybe dance a jig?

    I'm not sure why everyone's screaming hoax so vociferously. We've had jetpacks since the 60s. This is just a jetpack stuck under someone's feet instead of attached to their back.

    It a fake, you can tell when some of the shots don't have water flying, and others that do, if not a fake explain why some of the shot have a mist below and others that don't?

    Because his height above the water varies. Sometimes he's close enough to kick up mist, sometimes he isn't.
