I'm part ofthe great unwashed and I don't see where MS ever mentioned trade secret and I didn't see where the DMCA mentioned it either...Can someone explain, using references and passages from the MS letter and DMCA if possible?
Yes, that is in fact how things work now. You get some attention for yourself and then people listen to you. Of course, it's always been this way, it's just easier to leverage attention with the net. Good or bad, it's the way of the future- embrace and extend this model for yourself
First Metallica attacks their fans, turning in their names and having them banned from Napster. Now Microsoft attacks the leading geek site on the web. Yep, that's the way to win hearts and minds. I'll be sure to keep in mind next time someone asks for my input in deciding between SQL Server and Oracle.
Of course it's only a matter of time until gene-hackers do spread real viruses for fun. Some little DNA sequencer-kiddie will kill millions one day , and I'm not sure there's a way to stop it.
I really do feel a book relying heavily on slahsdot posts is very much against the spirit of slashdot. Admitting that you didn't even really try to contact all the posters makes the whole thing seem morally dubious and will hurt the rep of this site far more than it will help. Now everyone will be wondering "Will Katz quote me in his next book? The one where he's not donating the profits to charity?"
I didn't already have a CS degree. Or if they offered a masters level program. Or if they offered something like this in molecular biology or space systems engineering. Sure I'd lose a year of income, but so what? I'd be much better off afterwards. I'll be keeping a close eye on these guys.
I'm all for giving artists money for their work. But I'm at a complete loss as to why I should pay some bloated corporation money to distribute product when I simply don't need their distribution services anymore. It was hard enough to justify when there were physical pieces to move around, but with MP3, etc. I really don't need a record company to get the music from the artists to me. Keep in mind that only a buck or two at most from each CD actually goes to the artists- the rest ends up in the pockets of retailers and record labels. Who needs 'em?
Yeah, that was my favorite part too. Like the record companies don't call their art "product' and ship faceless "units". I can pretty much assure you the shareholders of whoever puts out Metallica records (WB?) thinks of them as a commodity.
Ok, sure there's a backdoor in this dll, but what can you do with it? Is it something that can only be accessed from the console? From a webpage somehow? and what rights does the backdoor give you? As funny as I think this is (come on, the fix is "delete the file"?), it remains to be seen just how dangerous the hole really is.
As I mentioned in a thread below, I'm boycotting all big media -CDs, movies, DVDs, all of it, as long as this nonsense continues. I spend literally thousands of dollars a year on entertainment products, but not one more penny of my money is going to support these actions. I've had it. This is completely unacceptable. I understand fear of the future, but change or die people.
I'm a pretty big media consumer. I have well over a thousand cds and a quickly building collection of DVDs (I also paid to see over 100 movies in theatres last year). I am the media companies target market. But now I'm pissed off. They've got no business pushing all these lawsuits which will only serve to hurt the small indepentant artists. If you can't compete with the new techs, well then learn to use them. But you won't be using any more of my money to sue people innovating new delivery streams. I hereby boycott all media. I will buy no more cds, no more dvds, see no more movies as long as these suits are outstanding. I represent several thousand dollars of annual media expenditures, and while that's not even a drop in the bucket, there are others like me who will do the same thing.
And that includes Phantom Menace. I'd happily buy the trilogy on DVD. But if Lucasfilm wants my home video dollars, they'll just have to catch up with the 21st century.
figured out a way to make all cars slow down to 10 kph. Change the setting remotely or spoof the sat signal or whatever. Great idea. Remember, CSS will never be broken. Harry Caul
Why in the world would you *not* expect this to happen? You think we're gonna have these tools and not use them? Or you think we just won't have these tools? If you don't, you're really not paying attention to the pace of technology at all.
I think there's only a couple of purely human generations left, and the sooner we accept that, the better our repsonse can be.
... has found the words to so eloquently express those things I've been feeling myself but could not communicate. Sterling is saying these things not so much because he believes them to be true, but because he realizes he *needs* them to be true. He is more in touch with both his needs and his world than almost anyone else writing today. Call it post-hippie gibberish if you will, but what he writes about is what we all must have. Dammit, he's trying- what are you doing? In a hundred years, these little manifestoes of his will have meant more than anything slashdotters ordinarily obsess over. Hell, who'll care about Athlon architecture next year? Harry Caul
Actually, that's the process I assumed. What I was saying is that the quality is good enough for filmmakers to decide how to put the film together. I would assume that most editors and directors would have rather high standards for quality while editing, but I might well be wrong.
They did a special one-time show here in Atlanta. Now the quality of the footage wasn't tops to begin with, but what there was looked great on the big screen. Maybe not this generation of projectors, but the next should be more than capable.
Also, isn't AVID editing all digital? What's the resolution there? Good enough to make the film, apparently.
In 1989, I was working as a clerk at Tower Records. I told everyone who'd listen not to make a career of the record store business since within 10 years we'd have a way to download music for free. And whaddaya know, 10 years later... Heh heh..it's nice to be right once in my life...
I've been into the.mod,.s3m,.mp3 thing for years now- I've got a hard drive full of music from people who don't even have recording contracts. This is the way I like my music. I don't bother to pirate anything, there's nothing commercial I want that badly.
Where the labels/stores will get into trouble is the 20/80 rule- 20% of your customers provide 80% of your sales. So if you lose that top 5%, you're close to being out of business. Ah well.
On another note, why doesn't the book industry have a problem with the ".txt" format? Soemthing to ask yourself.

My god! They found Telephone wiring in his home!

And any website that includes these will be off my phone browsing list. That simple.
I haven't heard of any today...
Don't buy TPM or anything else from the companies suing to stop deCSS or MP3s or whatever is next. Don't give them the money to finance these battles!
