Just because MS pumps out version after version of DirectX means that OpenGL must suck because they're only working on their second full version now? That argument just doesn't hold water.
Just so you know, OpenGL 1.x has been around for a very long time now, and it still happens to be totally viable. Why? Because it was a very well designed and fully featured graphics language when it first appeared. DirectX has been playing catch-up ever since.
It's just in the last year or so that DirectX has actually added newer features that OpenGL 1.x doesn't handle. If you look at the specs for OpenGL 2.0, you will see that once it comes out, DirectX will have probably another 5-6 releases to go before it catches up again. Oh, and it runs on just about every platform out there.
Ever heard of a real-time medical imaging package that uses DirectX? Yeah, thought not. And you never will. DirectX is really for games only, and not only that, MS platforms only on PC and XBox.
I could go into all the fundamental differences between OpenGL and DirectX, but is there really any point? The last one I will point out is this: DirectX is really a direct mapping to hardware, it's not really a Graphics Language per-se in that it's focus is on the actual implementation of the graphics and not on the graphics themselves. OpenGL on the other hand is ALL about the graphics, with the actual implementation totally left up to the environment it runs in.
You're right except for the really bad comparison. There IS no version of Vice City for PC, it's a PS2 ONLY game.
If you're looking for the proper comparison, it's GTA3 on PC vs GTA3 on PS2.
But, the playability factor is the major one as you mentioned. I thoroughly enjoy playing GTA3 on the console over the PC, it just feels better. (Besides the comfort factor of being able to lounge on the couch;-) Even though, as you mention, it typically _looks_ better on the PC.
Your average response here is going to be from an unemployed technozealot of some sort telling you what to do with your resume to get a job, that they don't have.
Your best bet is to make a resume that is the best representation of the work you are capable of. If you read it, and it looks like it describes you and you'd give yourself a job then get it out there and see what happens. You'll find out pretty quickly whether it's working or not, and if not make some adjustments and go at it again.
IMHO, people spend WAY too much time worrying about how to write the perfect resume when they'd already have a job if they'd put that energy directly into finding jobs and applying for them.
Do plugins count as an installation for your case? If not, you could use Flash or SVG, though I'm suggesting SVG since I believe that in the context of the software you will be providing it would likely be the more viable solution. SVG is XML based so it can be manipulated dynamically, and it also has a huge number of image processing capabilities built into it. Probably worth looking into.
Did I ever say that what MS has innovated was worthwhile or useful? No. I don't use their burn-from-explorer feature or many others either.
Where did you get the idea that I have never used linux? You're making an ASS out of U and ME thank you very much.
Now, with those wonderful features you are touting that exist in Linux, answer me this: You just install any version of linux and there you go, you get all that? Or do you need to know about these things, add in features, configure all kinds of stuff etc etc? Thought so.
Yeah, I can do all of that shit too in windows, if I go to the trouble of installing addons and utilities etc. (I happen to run an extremely customized LiteStep setup, you wouldn't know I was running XP unless you really went looking)
If you'd quit being a fanboy for just a second, we could possibly go and compare standard off-the-shelf, no special knowledge required, base installs and see where we're at.
BTW, some of your arguments are quite amusing. Vectorialized icons that are freely resizable ARE a good thing, and aren't available in windows yet BUT, they aren't good for the reasons you think. Desktop icons are a totally fucked up way of interfacing with a computer, it doesn't matter how pretty they are, how resizable they are, whether they can give you a blow job or not, THEY SUCK as an interface element. Why? Well shit, if you can't figure that one out this conversation is well over. (Pretty sure it is anyways, but I could go on)
In terms of GUI, linux has never been innovative at all, just copying from MS and not really making improvements. (aside from leaving out cruft) And in that time, MS HAS continued innovating, maybe not what we would concider innovation, but for home users BIG time. Even things as simple as integrating CD-R burning into explorer. Yes, I know BUT, for most home users of XP that burn CD's, this is the killer app. Linux will probably rip this 'feature' too some day, but it will always be after MS already did it, unless something drastic happens.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to dump a bit of reality into your optimistic outlook for the future of linux on the desktop. I guarantee you, it will NOT just fall in the lap of linux. It will have to be pried from Billy G's cold dead hands. (Or at least MS's)
Sure, it may be a minor inconvenience this bug, but totally unworthy of hopping up on the soap box. Do you really think anyone cares that you won't use Mozilla until this is fixed? No, we don't.
Now for a hint: You are the one clicking links in whatever application, email or whatever. You can't remember that you have done so? You can't click through your back button, or use the convenient drop-down list of past documents attached to the back button...oh shit, I said I wasn't going to explain this to you.
And moderators, mod me flamebait again as I am sure you will, BUT, if the original comment I responded to wasn't flamebait and my response to that was, well, we already know what kind of fucking hypocrits lurk around here.
He was talking about meaning in the grand scheme of things, not in the sense you are disagreeing with him on.
I know that I have meaning in my life, BUT, I also very strongly believe that my life, and yours, and everyone elses on this planet, along with the planet and everything else out there, has no meaning. And if it does, NONE of us has the mental capacity to comprehend it.
And then, what would the point have been? He would have been relegated to explaining complete and utter boredom and uselessness, through...complete and utter boredom.
The WHOLE point is that in cyberspace, there is NO point, nothing means anything anymore and the only things left at all are emotions and physical responses...which have to REALLY be cranked up to even be perceived anymore since they can still be experienced, but have no meaning whatsoever.
Nothing I do means or affects anything, and I can never get out of this. Hmm, let's see what happens when I cut my own leg off with a rusty saw. Why not?
You are so right, however I think you are still missing part of the point.
A major part of the point being that, in their cyberspace, these horrific events mean NOTHING, which is the truely horrifying thought. The author has to shock you to a point of desensitizing you, so that you can appreciate the desensitization and hopelessness of the characters in the story.
The story just wouldn't have the same impact if the main character just sat in an empty room for 600 years doing nothing.
What do tabs and new windows popping up have to do with each other? You seem to be saying that windows only start popping up once you start using a tabbed browser, which is just not the case.
Sorry, I just don't get your point, other than if you are requesting a pop-up killer ala mozilla which is obviously a good thing, but again totally unrelated to tabs.
Bought mine last thursday here in canada, no sticker anywhere saying it was copy protected. Wouldn't play in ANY of my players, except on my intel PC at work, using their stupid little player app which plays you pre-ripped versions. (Which do NOT sound any better than 128 bit mp3's, though I have absolutely NO idea what format/bitrate they are in)
Immediately returned it to HMV. No hassle there, but it just gets returned as a defect so unless this happens thousands of times there will likely be little effect seen.
Unfortunately it seems as if the masses are already buying into this crap hook, line and sinker with a very prevolent attitude of 'So what, you wanted to steal from the band? What's so wrong with copy-protection'. Don't get me fucking started...did I not just BUY the damned thing?
(as mentioned in the parent poster, you can see this lame assed attitude for yourself all over the massive attack forum, hardliners from both camps, but I get the distinct feeling that the pissed off fans of massive are the vocal minority and that the general attitude of the rest of the public is total ignorance and nonchalance (sp?).
Think of it this way: How many people that you know bought a computer for their home sometime in the late 70's? They were available, expensive, and really just 'toys'. Now 30 years later, who _doesn't_ have one?
Not to say that the segway will turn out this way, but that the end result is far from determined.
You didn't charge for what google cached, and google isn't charging for access to that once it is cached.
Wow, and you still don't get it.
THEY'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL DIPSHIT!!! And I was annoyed at you for saying so even though it's a bold faced lie. It's called slander my friend, whether it's intentional or whether it stems from total ignorance, as in your case.
You post something on the internet, for all to have free access to, and then get pissy when someone copies it to provide cached access to it, never trying to make money off of it or anything else, and also giving you a way to opt out should you really want to?
No offense but, fuck off, _I'm_ eating your cake right now.
(You do get that right, you don't want something copied then don't put it on the fucking internet moron)

We live in a capatalist society.
Money needs to be made to survive.

He requires image PROCESSING, not fancy gui crap.
Try filtering an image on the client using DHTML.
Right, can't be done.
Please moderators, revoke the interesting moderations, this suggestion is so far off base it really should be offtopic.

How would a back button work?
Do I really have to answer that?

How the fuck is that offtopic?
Actually, that's one of the most on topic comments I've seen on here in a while.
Read the fucking articles you wanking moderators, how fucking hard is that?
Well, that pretty much sums you up in a nutshell!
Guy uses IE over moz on a mac, good god. What a gluton for punishment.
Used any version newer than Moz 0.7 or so?
Ever heard of Phoenix?
Just curious, but really, putting IE on your list there totally destroys all credibility you may think you have.

The point went flying over your head at a hundred miles an hour then.
Do you really need me to explain it?
HINT: re-read what you posted. The whole point is right there under your nose, just open up your mind a wee little bit.
Lame excuse.
There is a workaround or 2 if really needed.
There's also this thing called a...wait for it...Back Button! (Holy shit ehh!)

If I'm not mistaken (99% sure I'm not), UT2003 uses ogg for all of it's music.
Not the only game I've seen using ogg either!
