Tried installing the 6.0 UberPatch on 2 separate boxes now, both running W2kPro sp2 with IE 6.0 installed with VS.NET beta2.
(IE v. 6.00.2462.0000 to be exact)
The installation quits with an error telling me I must have IE 6.0 to install.
Also seen as mentioned above similar effect on 5.x versions other than 5.5 with that version install. Leaves me not exactly feeling warm and fuzzy about whether the actual patch will really patch the holes it's supposed to or not!
No, not really if it is structured properly in the first place. Besides, games are never write once run anywhere, there are always code forks to get games working on as many different varying platforms as possible anyways.
These companies that want us to pay them for content are the same ones that store every little bit of info about US, and then make money selling that info to other companies.
Just a little brainpower would bring you to the conclusion that one password for your local stuff and one dummy for anything that doesn't really matter.
Damned, I'm sorry my american friends but you sure are ignorant of us canadians. After reading all of the posts to this thread, I'm thoroughly disgusted at the level of ignorance, as usual. (And that's not just relating to your knowledge of the state of our broadband and internet backbone)
First off, this is nothing new. The canadian government has been at the forefront of connectivity and research into related technologies for the past 15 years. Our cross-country backbone (which was recently upgraded again to Internet3 I believe) has been owned and provided by the government for the history of the internet in this country.
Because of our wonderful government, I've had access to
Look, we're the 2nd biggest country in terms of land mass on the planet and we only have some 32 million people living here, but we're the most connected country in the world next to singapore which is like comparing apples and oranges anyways.
Hey Billy-Bob way out in the boonies of louisiana, let me know when you get that tenth mortgage on your house so you can drop the tens of thousands it'll cost you to get high-speed access so we can play a round of Quake or whatever...
Now that I think about it though, your nastiness and ignorance does make sense, it's called jealousy.
This article states that it is likely that man, and therefore likely native americans, wiped out the mammoths by over-hunting.
But did the native americans go on and wipe everything else out? Um, NO!
Gee, maybe they learned from their mistake and thus began conservative hunting/living practices.
Hmm, and just maybe this article is suggesting that we 'Remember' this lesson lest we either have to learn it again, or worse, we fuck it all up without ever figuring it out again.
BTW: 13000 some odd fucking years after the Mammoths were extinct the Bison were still roaming, the next day the europeans killed them all...yeah, you must be right, it was just the guns.
You're definately on the right track, but Jesus didn't create Religion. Religion existed quite a while before that (Um, budhism maybe?). Actually, it is strongly believed that Jesus was an actual person whom existed, though whether he even remotely resembled (in action, not appearance) the Jesus described today is concidered extremely unlikely.
No, rather our friends the Romans turned Christianity into a tool of control that has lasted to this day. Christianity came first, the Romans took it, destroyed all workings of it, created 'The Bible', and gave it back to the christians whom falsely believe to this day that they are following the one and only truth. If they'd only realize that their precious bible was the first truly massively successful use of propeganda in known history.
I myself have noted explicitly that this is a viable technology with some very good uses.
The point is, who will be implimenting this in IE6? You maybe? Fuck off you ignorant pissant. If you can't see who is in control of this in the IE6 browser and how it is likely to be used, well, yet another fool whom must be working for M$.(Or at least should be).
The SDK is just the type of 'proof' M$ will need if they ever get taken to court over this...Oh no sir, there are many other uses for Smart Tags, Anyone can use Smart Tags...
It won't change the fact that M$ will use it to alter/add content to ALL web pages viewed in IE6.
Use your brain, you're falling for it hook line and sinker.
This is obviously not the monitor for you, but it is for many many uses.
Bigger means more people can view it at the same time from greater distances.
Better resolution meanst that you get more detail out of it.
Quite often these don't go hand in hand, since one doesn't necessarily require the other.
These will be great in classrooms and the like in which case, what would be the point to doubling, tripling or greater the resolution? Little bobby at the back isn't going to care, he's still just happy that he can se it at all. Also, the only reason the school could afford one is because the price didn't go up exponentially because of the higher resolution which requires _much_ higher processing power etc etc etc.
Your's will be coming some day, but this just isn't it.
I sort of have to agree, however it appears to me to be backwards in a way...I think that analogies are being used regularly around here because there are so many brainless/. users that must be lead by the hand through even the simplest of issues.
Oh, so you've seen this check-box?
And everyone out there in the land of the net will know this and use it properly?
Why is it that so many/.rs think that the whole world is as smart as them? When there are currently some 20+ million AOL users, what makes you think web users will understand this technology?
M$ is relying on the fact that most people are somewhat ignorant and will likely never realize that they are being given skewed information.
And just how many users are going to understand what is going on?
And just how the hell are you going to know which links belong to the author and which were generated by M$?
And what makes you think that M$ will do anything other than have sets of links that favor them explicitly?
You're forgetting that this is already fully controlled by M$, there is no room for 'how it should or could be used properly' because Bill hasn't asked and isn't going to. He already knows what he's doing and he's relying on people like you to help him 'show everyone else' what a good thing it is.
Don't you get it? This will allow M$ to turn ALL internet content into M$ content.
Yeah! and 5 years from now we'll be sending around lists that are 10000 entries long called the 'opt-out list'
I don't want this...
I don't want that...
I don't care for this... ....etc ad nauseum...
Ahh, here's my line of content...
Who else has noticed how Smart-Tags are used in OfficeXP? Well, it's actually a quite useful implimentation, automatically linking names, numbers between apps etc, could be quite handy...just like it is quite handy to have IE load almost instantly...but does it make it right or is this just the switch part of the bait?
The way this stinks to me is that they have built a useful technology that has great potential for abuse. But: First they are going to release OfficeXP which uses the same technology in a viable and reasonable fasion so when they release the feature in IE6 and all of a sudden the whole internet becomes M$ friendly and directed they will be able to say "but you didn't complain about it in Office, actually you liked it there". Gives them a mighty good platform for any lawsuits thereafter.
I have a suggestion: If IE6 ships with this 'feature', I suggest that ALL developers LOCK their pages out to this browser.
OK, you HAVE to work for M$, don't you.
Like piss off already, I can't believe what you are saying. You think we're that stupid? If I decide I don't wan't to look at advertising, I have a choice of finding some software like junkbusters that will remove it for me. Has anyone asked M$ for this? Will it be a stand-alone downloadable application? Give me a break.
M$ is FORCING this upon us. Just what kind of content do you think these links will point to? Random relevant info on the net or M$ designed content? Well why would they develop this and force it on us if it wasn't this way?
I can't believe the ignorance of some of these/. babies. Must be imposters, maybe good ol'e Bill himself ehh?
Cute!

This is all just comparing apples and oranges though.
Tux is a static web server, whereas Apache and IIS are both full-blown dynamic web servers.
Sure, we can compare them as this article did, but the results don't mean shit.
...and you STILL mod up a pathetic posting like this.
/. ever fucked up, whoda ever guessed that Monty Python would be one day slammed by the very geeks that patroned it!
Did the moderators not notice that not ONE response to this posting agreed with it?

For shame!

Moded to 5 as Funny?
Now that's funny.
OK, did I ever say that 'M$ WILL FOR SURE ABUSE THIS'? Or did I actually say M$ HAS THE TECHNOLOGY TO DO THIS IF THEY CHOOSE TO ABUSE IT.
If you don't see at least the potential for abuse, well then I'm sorry I tried to open your eyes. Don't come crying when/if it happens.
Wasn't deep blue just a gaming console anyways? I believe all it did was play chess. ;-)
I myself have noted explicitly that this is a viable technology with some very good uses.

Drop the arrogance, it just proves you wrong.
You're so right because this is the greatest technological achievement since the invention of the transistor!
Wow, since you put it that way, I'm going to go offer my little brain to Bill's 'Collection'...
Oh Fuck, I give up being facetious...you're a fucking idiot and it's not worth dealing with because you've already been assimilated.
