I really wish people would stop posting MarsOne propaganda. It's a scam, pure and simple. It's been pointed out time and time again that their team is primarily artists and PR people. Just look here for yourself:

    http://www.mars-one.com/en/about-mars-one/team

Of the 7 people listed there's: an artist, an editor, a communication specialist, a communications director, and an MD. There's only 2 people who could conceivably have any expertise on getting to Mars.

They did an interview (AMA) on reddit and were torn apart:

They lack any coherent plan on how they're going to even test their technology, let alone actually get people to Mars. Stop looking towards entertainers to do what you know will require a massive engineering effort. These people are after free press and free money.

To be honest this system is far from perfect, but the system you described seems batshit crazy. Government funding private schools? What's the point of them being "private"?

MarsOne is scam perpetuated by people who have no idea what they're doing. They can't put anyone on Mars (intact anyway) for anywhere close to $6 billion. Just look at your own link and compare it to say: http://www.spacex.com/ Their website is far more Web 2.0 (donate here!, Facebook like here! Buy a tshirt here!), then it is technology related.

Yeah I agree, people seem to be really deluding themselves about the cost of mining in space. Until we exhaust all of a particular element on Earth (or something not readily available like He-3) , it's really really hard to imagine mining in space being cheaper than here on Earth. There might be niches for those elements, but everything else I'll bet stays local.

Governments have been funding private industry for decades to do this stuff. NASA routinely contracts out to Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman or Ball Aerospace to build vehicles or instruments. People act like all of NASA's budget is spent at NASA centers, when it's actually the exact opposite. SpaceX isn't really anything new, they're just doing it better and cheaper then places like Lockheed Martin.

This is exactly the problem. The pipeline is bled dry waaaay before actual companies try and hire women programmers. There is quite possibly some sexism involved in hiring practices, but the bigger issue is why are there so few women in a position to be hired in the first place? Why aren't many women choosing to study these subjects. Are they being discouraged from studying computer science? Are they graded more harshly? Is it social pressure?

I've been wondering recently if it isn't more to do with expectations. Men are judged very harshly on their career. A man with a crappy job is often unfairly seen as a crappy man. Women are given much more space and encouragement to "find themselves" I find (anecdotal I know....) and can work "lowly" jobs without judgement. This is likely due to the fact that they encounter more obstacles than your average man, so people generally cut them more slack (reasonably). But I can't help but wonder if the lowered expectations isn't also preventing some women from finding their true potential. A more insidious form of sexism since it's based on good intentions.
