  1. Re:Good argument for government intervention... on A DSL Co-op in Your Neighborhood? · · Score: 1

I agree with you. It's that way down here in Stafford too. DSL is shitty down here, and the cable service (Adelphia)is mediocre at best. As far as fining the companies, that doesn't do shit. I remember reading somewhere that Verizon incorporates fines into their operating costs. It's more profitable for them to pay the fines then to correct the violation. That sickens me. I'm not normally for government regulation of anything, but I would definitely agree that government regulation is in order here (NOT Tauzin-Dingell). If someone were to propose a bill that regulated the companies and didn't dick over the end user, I'd be all for it. Just my .02

The voice of the robot is a definite thing to worry about. If the voice of it gets annoying after less than an hour, people probably won't like to keep it around. Personally, I think the voice of HAL would be perfect. If not HAL, I would think that some other mellow sounding voice would be in order

Actually, back in 10th grade, a friend of mine took an old TI-80 and gutted it and managed to get the smaller Gameboy (Gameboy Pocket?) to fit in the TI-80 case somehow. Looked exactly like the calculator (he used part of the case to hide the game cartrige too). Never got caught with it either. One of the coolest ways to pass time in class IMO. Wish he'd have taken some pictures of it before it got stolen :(.

  4. Sounds like another way for Verisign to cash in on VeriSign/NSI Proposes Domain Name Wait Listing Service · · Score: 1

This is strictly IMO, but it sounds like this is just another way for verisign to extort money from its customers... Notice how most other parties involved are against it? It probably will never pass or be an actual business plan, althouh Verisign would definitely make some cash off of this if it were to go through

  5. Re:41 mpg ? That's quite a lot ! on Sony/Toyota Developing Car With Emotions · · Score: 1

Not to shoot off on a tangent or anything, but here's a bit about the Cadillac 8-6-4 V8 (it was listed somewhere as the worst american V8 ever). Anyway, the theory was that the computer in the car would sense when the engine wasn't running under load, and would cut off fuel to x number of cyls, I beleive at diff points in the engine to balance it. In theory it was good, but in reality, the engine would kick down to 6 or 4 cyls while at WOT (wide open throttle) for no apparent reason. Most people said to hell with it and unplugged the 8-6-4 control module. I know this is a bit offtopic, but I had to add my .02 about something I know a little something about

  6. If they Have good lawyers... on Copyright Claimed on Telephone Tones · · Score: 2, Interesting

IMHO, if they have the cash to buy some good lawyers, they'll probably be able to pull this off. What's sad is that big companies have gotten away with worse. (In fact, someone owns the patent on the Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich!) Maybe this will knock some sense into big companies copyrighting and patenting the lamest things (Hey, there's a patent on using a laser pointer to excersize cats too!)

  8. Re:stick it to intel on More Juicy Dual-Processor Goodness · · Score: 1

I'm sure they've taken measures to deal with heat (We've been waiting for AMD's SMP for quite some time now, and hearing tidbits here and there...) Intel's processors aren't exactly cool to the touch either... I'm pretty sure that the T-bird gives off somewhere around 50-60w of heat... The Pentium 4 puts out 52-55w of heat. Also, with the FCPGA design, the CPU core is exposed on the top (Hence the name flip-chip). I'm not positive, but if the core is faced outward, I'm guessing then that channels most of the heat into the heatsink (or TEC or whatever one is using), as opposed to the board absorbing it.

You know, it isn't pirating. Someone isn't scanning/typing books in and giving them to someone else... It's nothing like Napster because the books are voluntarily placed there by the creators of that piece of work. By the way, I thoroughly enjoy reading, especially some older Drangonlance books, etc..

I think it's a great idea. If you go there to read the book, and you like it, chances are you'll wanna go out and buy the actual book so you're not tied to the computer when reading it. If I saw a book online, I'm not gonna sit there and read the whole thing... I'll read maybe a chapter or two, then I'll go buy it if it's any good.
