    These high prices will discourage folks from taking a $299 XBox and turning it into a cheap Linux or NetBSD server which would deny MS any future revenue from video game sales.

    Check out the Fink project at fink.sourceforge.net and get on the users mailing list. Fink is a package manager for Darwin/OS X that makes it really easy to install and use *NIX software. The mailing list is also very helpful with advice.

    Mac OS 9 is unstable. Mac OS X is not. Here's my OS X uptime so far:

    1:29PM up 29 days, 18:58, 1 user, load averages: 3.01, 4.39, 3.75

    And thats just on a Powerbook G3. :)

    A "Kobayashi Maru" is a StarFleet Academy battle simulation. It is designed so that no one can win, its just a test to evaluate a cadet's reaction to circumstances beyond his/her control.

    Of course one cadet DID pass the test, James Tiberius Kirk, by cheating. He reprogrammed the simulation so that it was possible to win it. I guess that paved the way for him becoming the youngest Captain in Starfleet history (at that time) of the USS Enterprise.

    To be a proper geek, you MUST know these things.

    Or they could just go to college and take Computer Science courses which involve a lot of math, calculus and physics which have absolutely nothing to do with actual programming.

    Slashdot is still a hobbyist site. What I mean by that is the people who run this site even though its their job still treat it as a hobby. AND THATS FINE! They aren't journalists. They don't have any responsibilities to make you think. They just report what they think is "news for nerds, stuff that matters" or whatever.

    I mean jebus, I've heard enough of that Kyoto treaty crap on the nightly news. I gotta hear about it from Slashdot now too? Lets measure the two: Legendary computer games vs. obscure environmental treaty......hmmmmmmmm yeah thats a hard one to decide for a TECH SITE!

    Mac OS X ships with most services in a default off position, FTP, Telnet, Apache.....etc. You have to turn them on yourself to start using them.
