And HOW much traffick does slant-six get compared to Salon? How many people have even heard of slant-six compared to Salon?
If you are going to compare a site to Salon at least make sure the site is on the same scale and has the same expenses as Salon. Otherwise you might as well be posting som geoshitties page.
I'm about to choose my first Linux distro and I'd like to know which one has the better package manager, RH or Mandrake? I know Mandrake uses a modified form of RPM but is it better or worse?
As for the Debian apt-get folks I know its a great package manager, I use it myself on Mac OS X (thanks to fink, http://fink.sourceforge.net) but Debian as a distro itself is not the simplest to setup and I'm way past the tinker stage.:)
So my questions for Red Hat and Mandrake are:
1. Do they check dependencies well?
2. Sometimes I like to compile from source, which distro is that more likely to break things or cause trouble on?
3. Which one installs more stuff in total, RH or Mandrake?
4. Is it at all possible to use apt-get on RH, Mandrake easily? I know its been done but is it more trouble than its worth?
The Register also jumped on the "LCD iMac" bandwagon a few months ago. In any case you'll get no argument from me that Apple is slow as hell in releasing. I'm dying for 10.1 AND a better PBG4....you know one with a video card made in this century?
The amount of revenge the geeks get isn't enough to offset anything. The "normal" people still outnumber them by a significant amount.
And no not all normal people are "united" against geeks. Its just when the alpha males/females take the lead in picking on someone the others just stand around and laugh or at least do nothing to help. Its just basic nature. After the bullying is done for the day the jock takes the girl home and has some really great sex with her, the geek puts an ice pack on his face and life goes on.
Actually, Mr. Dork, prom kings are usually looked up to by "normal" people. Thats excluding the geeks and nerds they pick on. Prom kings and jocks usually got all the girls, friends, favors and attention so they were HONORING him by mentioning that he was a prom king not disparaging him.
Ok great. So we pray. Then what? Do prayers put food on the table or stop people from killing you? In any case once we DO pray then what? Stand around and pray all day?
A temporary violation of the separation of church and state is fine with me. Its not like anyone will tolerate it remaining for any long period of time. Got anything left to bitch about?
Save it for someone who gives a fuck. This is a time of national crisis. Your cries of "a violation of American principles" couldn't be less important than it is right now. Learn discretion and tact or continue to be a fucking asshole. THIS IS NEITHER THE TIME OR PLACE FOR THIS BULLSHIT YOU STUPID FUCK!
The more acceptance Open Source Operating Systems have in the corporate world the more peripherial support we will all see for them. The more companies that use Linux and BSD the more there will be hardware and video card drivers for them. The more drivers the more games. If this keeps up we won't just have open source OS's that are just 'leet' because they are hard to use, we'll have OS's that run all our games and video cards and anything else you could buy in a store for Windows.
Its not about the uberh4x0r comfort level you seem to advocate, understand?
I actually abstain from drugs but thank you for the compliment.:)
I don't want you to suffer man. I just want you to realize that this is an unstoppable force. I estimate we have between 5-7 years before this becomes a crisis for programmers in western nations. So if you are 40 now, you have until you are 47 to get ready, in whatever way you can, for the coming storm. If I were you, I would work and save obsessively for the next 7 years, save the money to buy two or three houses and rent them out for extra income. My point is YOU CAN SAVE YOURSELF if you plan ahead. But if you think anything can or even will be done to help you, you may be sorely dissapointed.
As for a level playing field, hah. The US almost always starts out from a higher ground compared to everyone else. Foreginers have to literally kill themselves to get on our level. Not that you care of course but the playing field is already "level" enough. And just for the record I am an American born and raised.
Lastly I must say, if you don't love programming and you are already 40, its time to find something you DO love before too much more of your life passes you by. This whole issue could be doing you a favor.:O
Yeah if all Americans were lazy enough to take 28 days off a year our country would have the high unemployment rates that Europe currently has. So no thanks, I'd like to keep my job and show up those who just want nothing but more vacations.
There are many auto-workers employed in the U.S. Many foreign manufacturers, including Honda and Nissan, now have plants here that employ U.S. auto-workers. The reason for this is import tariffs on foreign cars and components made it more attractive to pay Americans a good wage than to pay a lower wage to foreign workers. And Japan has horrendous tariffs on American goods, so please don't portray America as the big bully in all of this.
So you want the government to subsidize your industry so you can continue to have a "comfortable" salary? Instead of standing on your own two feet you want a government handout in the form of a tariff in your favor? In other words you want all the dignity of a modern American farmer?
So by "adapt", do you mean "lower your standard of living, take a demeaningly low wage, and accept that it's too late for you to change professions"?
No I mean find another way to make the amount of money you need other than from your day job. If you love programming to the extent you don't want to leave it even when it can't support you anymore you'll need to find something on the side to keep you afloat.
Your desire to maintain your standard of living is irrelevant. US foreign policy is to get other countries to open their markets to free trade so we can benefit.
Well free trade works both ways. Like it or not you have to compete with programmers all over the world. The longer you bitch, the less time you have to learn new skills to keep yourself relevant.
You can try to fight it all you want. It didn't work for the 80's auto-workers and it won't work for you. Adapt and survive, adapt or die.

Heh can't believe I left this out.
How easy is it to update the kernel itself on Mandrake vs. Redhat? Is it easy to update online? How big are kernel patches/sources anyway?
Thanks for your answers! I just had one thing I forgot to ask, do you know which one has the easiest upgrade to the ext3 filesystem?

Please learn how to read. Apple isn't announcing shit, its a RUMOR that The Register is reporting on.
They meant scalability not in its own technical specifications but in how it can present data to the developers in a way that is not overwhelming.
Token Ring is cool because it can allow one bad node to bring down the whole network?
lol. I get it. They numb the mind/brain without killing you. No thanks.
Sounds like these guys were truly some "Evil Mystical Geeks"
That is amazing. Great link.

Flame on!
So what, answer his question anyway. Should we have waited until our enemies had caught up before we started to attack just to be "fair"????
There is a difference between speaking your mind and making trouble for others you stupid mother fucking piece of shit.
:)

Anyway almost everyone in any job thinks they are worth more than they are getting paid. Tell us something new.
