The workers who get laid off are NOT being hired by the company's competititors. The competitors have already went thru phases of downsizing themselves. Someone who gets laid off from HP doesn't get hired by IBM or Sun. Sheesh. They spend anywhere from 6 to 20 months looking for a new job and settle for about 2/3rds to half their pay at a very lower profile company.

Handspring was formed during the GOOD times. It wasn't because of any fear of layoffs it was because the founders of Palm didn't feel the company was heading in the right direction. Do you consider founders and CEO's to be normal type employees?

Very few people these days in this kind of an ecomony are jumping ship because they're afraid of getting laid off. Where would they jump ship too? Do you know of some secret supply of jobs?

Lastly who says a worker who stays with the company for a long period of time is better than those who don't? How do you know they aren't just sticking around for seniority bonuses? Perhaps they've stuck around because they have no drive or ambition. Did those thoughts ever cross your mind?

Listen up. The IT (tech) industry is the only industry thats designed to minimize and or eliminiate ITSELF. From the printing press to the cotton gin to the airplane to the computer to the PDA, each technological advance allows mankind to do the same amount of work or more with less people/workers/employees.

Simply put, Handspring is screwing up. They need to be bought or they're out of business. THe only reason to buy them is to gain marketshare and cut expenses. Whenever companies merge there are always redundancies. You don't even know if all of those 125 workers will be tech workers. But does a company really need duplicate anything? Do they need 8 office admins if they previously did fine with 4? Do they need two cooks if they only had 1 before? The same goes for programmers or netadmins. They don't need anymore of those.

Contrary to your idiotic claims there are NOT always alternatives to laying off people. If you are redundant, than you're redundant. Should they keep you on and pay you to sweep the floors instead of eliminating your position? Thats worse than unwise, its insulting.

Perhaps Hewlet-Packard should have just kept bleeding money. Because obviously executive pay always makes the difference. When a company is losing billions of dollars the millions paid out to the top brass REALLY makes a difference eh?

Do you think the technology industry is special or something? That workers in this industry are a special breed of citizen deserving of protections others do not receive? This is what happens to EVERY maturing industry. Consolidation and elimination of redundancies.

The Federal government is always in check. This is still a democracy and the voters have the final say whether its municipal, state or federal politics. Being able to leave the Union is um counter to your claims of not wanting anarchy. What power would the Federal government have if the states could decide to just up and leave over any issue they wanted to? Further what would stop individual cities and towns from breaking off from the states themselves if they get miffed? Where does it end?
The US would be similar to the current EU then. Very little federal cohesion and as a result a weakend indecisive nation overall.

A part of being a part of a nation is relinquishing some rights and freedoms for the good of the nation. Unless each of the 50 states wants to be its own pathetic nation-state we're better off now than we would be with your proposal.

This also suggests some shortsightedness. Instead of a strong America, you'd rather say Ohio break off from the Union if some farming law affects it negatively. What if the US had broken up into say four regions before WWII? Do you think we could have assisted appropriately not just in the defeat of Hitler but the reformation of western europe? Do you think that a loose co-alition of former US states would have anywhere the collective military might of the current US? Are you going to try to argue that if this nation simply minded our own business everything would just be fine and we'd never have to go to war except for a direct attack on or own soil?

For the most part, local police and state police ARE locally/state funded. The FBI is the federal police not the NYPD or The Boston PD or the Louisiana State Troopers...etc.

Yes we DO judge whats morally/fiscally correct by what others do. On a small scale people do so with their neighbors/friends/families. On a statewide scale towns and cities size each other up. On a national scale states compare themselves against other states (California's economy is bigger than Texas's so now Texas enacts some pro-business reforms...etc) and nations with other nations. Why else do you think we have a World Economic Forum or World Bank or International Monetary Fund? If none of these nations cared how well the others were doing economically they wouldn't be members of those organizations.

So yes it is entirely appropriate to say, since the US has lower taxes then the rest of most of the Western World you are bitching without cause. That doesn't mean you have to stop complaining, it just means in the grand scheme of things its not the abomination you make it out to be. Excessive taxes are an abomination not just taxes at all. The US has some of the lowest tax rates, income/sales in the western world. To complain about them is simply retarded. I mean we could do away with any and all social services. Then you could pay for your own personal security force and only the affluent would be afforded safety. When the unwashed masses begin to revolt however things might get hairy.

If you ARE a libertarian my question is this. If you could have your way and abolish the laws and regulations you hate how long would you expect the populace to put up with the country considering that the quality of life for millions would be severely decreased? The speed of writing on a PDA depends on a lot of things. First of all Grafitti sucks, which is why I don't use it. I found an app called TealScript which allows you to train graffiti to how YOU write. It even keeps stats on how fast you write, my record was 126 average strokes per minute. You can find it at www.tealpoint.com and its around $15-20. You can even customize those special characters if you want. It took me about a month to train the software to my current maximum efficiency.

The second most important factor is the CPU speed of the PDA. My first PDA was a Kyocera Smartphone 6035. It had a 20Mhz CPU. My second and present PDA is the Kyocera 7135 with a 33Mhz CPU (www.kyocerasmartphone.com). May not seem like much of a difference but it is night and day. The 7135 misses far less strokes than my previous PDA did. This increases my accuracy rate. And since PalmOS PDA's go all the way up to 400Mhz I don't think we'll have this speed recognition issue ever again.

I guess since my PDA is also my cell phone it is more handy since I always have it on me. I jot down whatever I need to in the memo pad or address book as needed. And I use the free app ReDo for repeating ToDo items.

    Hope this helps.
