I live in Cincinnati for one. This is being marketed to people who cannot currently get cable internet or DSL.
They are holding beta testing now, although I've tried to 'refind' the website before for another/. post I can't find one now. No.. I found the FAQ. From there you can surf through the other parts of the site to find more.
They've advertised this as a new way to get broadband in area's where there is none and claim download speeds of 250K, which would make me sign up for $39.95 a month.
The target here around Cincinnati would be the homes that aren't even close to the city but carry the WKRC station [Channel 12, "The new Generation of News!"-which is the same old people.]. This is a huge untapped market in plenty of area around Cincinnati.
As I've said earlier there will be many implementations of 'last mile' solutions. This may actually take off.
Considering Clear Channel 0wns this town's airwaves [thus politics and more!] I expect this service to take off somewhat. It isn't ideal anywhere but beats the similar 'Dish' technology.
Here is a PDF from 12/18/01 about the service... although it's been on TV for almost a year.
Sometimes we here in the 'Nati get things faster. We had HBO-On Demand first, and our Cincinnati Bell was featured as the first to offer 'Internet Call Manager' services. We were putting in Digital [two way] cable years before anyone had Cable Modems [about the time Time Warner bought out both cable services] and DSL was here pretty quick.
Maybe Mark Twain was wrong when he said: "When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always twenty years behind the times."
"They are the ones who should take responsibility, not people who just do what they are told."
If you don't know how to say "NO!" when you are told to do something wrong, you are also part of the problem.
The Nuremberg Defense: 'as it has become known, provides that private citizens have a duty and a privilege under international law and state crime prevention statutes to prevent crimes against the peace, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Federal and state courts traditionally have rejected the Nuremberg Defense. The Nuremberg Principles are a part of customary international law, however, and as such should be applied in domestic courts. In addition, the justifications offered by courts for rejecting the Nuremberg Defense wither under careful analysis. After concluding that it is proper for the courts to permit the Nuremberg Defense, this Note examines several recent cases that allowed the Nuremberg Defense, and argues that these cases offer a more rational and legally sound approach to the issue. "They told me to do it!"
"I didn't want to get fired"
The problem is, I've been on the 'net for a while and it's become second hand. I don't abuse it, or even have an addiction.
But I do realize the strength the internet has, compared to when I first got on. I can go watch "To Kill a Mockingbird" on the web. I can do so many things.
There is great power there and I want to be able to use it. I want to be able to host a web page and share the usage. These lines do exist.
No theft. I want highspeed! My point is, with wireless - a certain group of people could get access. I could share it with my neighbors who are close. No line of sight problems either. We can 'hide' the transmitters in the back of the yard.
We are also lucky enough to have T1 lines in our area [within the mile].
Simply, I want to have on demand access or even no frills access.
Now that cable services are starting to fall and AOL begins to take over the cable market wireless points will be a huge innovation.
But we are still waiting. Wireless is becoming the new thing, but communities need to respond. But buying these home [and business] wireless products hopefully this will fuel the boom.
Now that my cable service is dropping me when using any P2P service and even newgroups [ahem] I've considered buying a bigger cable/pipe which I can do what I'd like with. Something with more freedom and the abilty to share the access with home I want.
Now, my neighbors on both sides have internet access. One is my granparents whom use a $20 56K service and the others also use broadband [DSL].
I'm completely capable of running mail services, hell even a proxy server. I can do all these things with redhat or debain out of the box. No matter what their needs are I can set up the system.
Hopefully the wireless situation will become one where one could sell access to services. Whether they be a town, city or user group... let's hope wireless plays a big role in delivering a part of the 'last mile' solution.
Although if wireless becomes too much of a 'hobby' then large scale networks may not be seen. Hope we see a balance.

It's like the guy that passes on that one of time opportunity.... something makes you feel small down the road.
That isn't a great question to ask the/. community. You are going to get a million IANAL but here is three large - run on forever and ever quite descriptive version on my opinion.
If you think you have a case see a lawyer. Besides that there is nothing you can do except... nothing. You can't be mean to him, as this will give him a legitamate reason to fire or demote you. You shouldn't ignore him because that isn't good for anyone in the workplace. But, most importantly don't take his shit.
But if you are serious about doing SOMETHING, do it legally and through the proper channels. I could have been one of the few woman-on-man sexual harassment 'victims' [read:Millionaire] if I would have sought real legal advice early.
Besides that, if you don't even know for sure what he thinks and he hasn't actually affected your job or overall life, there isn't much you can do.
I'm 21 and I learned this lesson fast. If you don't like the people you work with [or they don't like you] there isn't anything you can do; and if you quit or do something to get fired you may find it hard to get work afterwards.
DVD-Audio? Which format is that going to be in? Jesus we could get some great sound out of those!
The problem is, the amount of audio that would be needed to fill a DVD is outrageous. Most artists can't even fill a 74min CD [with good songs]!
Then again, we could get N*Stync all at once, and if they don't sell lots of albums they would be gone in a week. It could also show what an artist really has. When they say that they've been working on this CD their whole lives they would be telling the truth.
But this isn't going to change a thing. If we do get DVD audio discs [hrmm... what does DVD stand for?] not only will we rip the songs, but we will be ripping the videos that come with them.
People always find a way! I mean wake up... mp3's are being released by warez style groups. Haven't you gotten a song off of a P2P and noticed a three letter acronym at the end. Groups always have a three letter acronym.....
I simply bought a triple fan that hooks nicely on the CPU. No heatsink, no grease.
Sometimes the case does get hot. But the simplest solution in my mind was to put my air purifier fan behind my case.
Now when I put my hand on the floppy drive I don't feel the warm air. Basically it's a small fan with a filter on the bottom. Now it doesn't have the filter and blows air right onto the power supply and the back of the case.
This is a homebuilt PC so you know not everything fits the way it should. I've got extra holes on the back of the case which could be used for extra serial ports or the like. I kinda' opened them and now the air flows right in.
The important note is that I've got the front 'case fan' blowing air OUT of the case. This way none of the hot air is built up into the case with no place to go.
Try my idea and blow some smoke into the air stream. With my current setup you can see some of the smoke coming out of the front of the case.
Not all computer users live there. We've had VOD for a year.
HBO on Demand! Says they have the first two seasons of Sopranos on there... don't! Watched 9 episodes and then I noticed #10 was missing. Then they all were gone within 2 days.
Sure, but I hope that Microsoft or Real isn't. The two formats they support aren't free an any sense.
If you truely want to promote a format that you could count on in the future, write to the BBC telling them the honest truth about the streams. Don't lie, but also explain your somewhat interest in a widely used open source music compression format [codec].
I really do want to store my entire music collection on CDs - but not a standard audio cd format. MP3 would be good, but it's large and isn't free, although mo'free than WMA and RA. Being able to add a folder to my CD containing the source [or latest CVS mainline] lets me feel safe that later on down the road I may be able to play those songs.
I don't care if P2P systems don't want to support it - I just want it to be continually developed.
I've been noticing for weeks now an ability to shut your whole connection off [only briefly enough] if they don't want you doing something.
I've only had this happen to me doing these things:
* Kazaa [one port, easy to detect]
* Gnutella [any client, only using 6346 port!]
* WinMX [anytime I connect to an opennap server]
* USENET [not all groups, but a general 'backup' of anything in the alt.binaries.* tree. No more playboy pics for me:(]
* Uploading [When uploading to a private FTP... expect to get booted]
I thought this was a windows issue since I have just moved and as a consequence started a new account with new hardware. Since the move, I've gotten my boxen up and they get disconnected using even SCP! [if it takes more than one hour]
So I can't SSH to my boxen because what? There is no excuse for this. I can see the blocking of P2P systems since TimeWarner DOES own all the content people are trying to share.
The problem is they don't actually watch what you do. They figure, port 1214... Kazaa, shut him down. But when is the line drawn for LEGITIMATE USE?
I can't connect to my own PC for private toying around? I can't download a distro? I guess I can't even install over FTP?
Just when I was loving 'Broadband' and it's perks. You know, constant updates to anything. Even if it is for your slash.applett....
My solution? Debian's apt-get package system with Mandrake's ease of use.
Apt-get seems to be the only good install system out there. RPM doesn't hold a candle. I've not used one RPM utility that worked as good as the apt-get tool.
But debian isn't got it all! If mandrake built their distro off of debian, we wouldn't need this discussion. But they would also need to do a lot more work... so...
It has to be the biggest crap site on the net today. Not because I'm linux fanboy #1, but because its a forum for liars and idiots.

lol... trust me... that's WKRP . P . P .
It worked for Satellite companies, and still does for the customers who can't afford bi-directional service.
