$21.99 is too much for the double CD when we know that it only cost about 10 cents more for the second CD.
I know these companies need to pay for recording cost, promotion fees, what they paid Carson Daily, what they paid your local radio station, what they paid your local senator and so forth. But it's obvious that no matter how cheap it is for the 'industry' the price of CD's are not going down.
It's called price fixing.
Recording artist sometimes record at home, don't have any of their songs played on the radio, and could care less what Carson Daily thought of them. Their CD still costs $12-21.
Some artists are living poor, while others are so good damn rich it should be illegal. The consumers on the other hand are getting raped by $20 CDs and a sweeping control of their desktop computers.
My prediction: We see a business model by 2003 where we can buy music online. It will cost MORE, and we won't have control over one thing that goes on with our computers. Thanks Bush! Thanks RIAA. Thanks MS [.net]
If we are the criminals, why don't we feel like it while they fit the part so well.
Of course, I haven't been to sleep in a good while, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I understand, it's 6 PM I just woke up.
You are right this isn't what Kazaa is now. But it kinda is? They have a streaming music plug-in for winamp. I believe Kazaa should block all mp3 downloads and then only let people share their mp3s and stream other people's mp3s to their computer.
This would let people play songs that they don't own, but not let them keep them. Gives us a reason to keep Kazaa up. I'd go for this service. Kazaa doesn't let you download quality mp3 songs anyways.
Kazaa in my mind, is the best solution to a fee based P2P network. It's technically better than most out there - just get rid of IE.
If they do turn into a streaming service, they should allow streaming of all types of media, MPEG, DivX, ogg!
"If they're alleging that people are going to be confusing Microsoft Corp. with Lindows.com, I think there's zero potential of that happening," he said. "If people are confused, just remember that we're not the convicted monopolist."
Murchinson said Microsoft considered legal action a last resort.
I'm still laughing!
On Murchinson's comment, it can't be a 'last' resort because they don't stop. When you play monopoly do you just plain give up?
I don't think suing them will be the last step - it's their first. They can sue easily, they have lawyers. It's like a Soviet Tank rush in Red Alert 2.. hit your enemy before they can build anything, then they can't get back at you; kill slowly from there.
Windows has become a product of it's own. Not an 'os' anymore. Instead of changing people to linux, change their flavor of windows.
lol... but at least explain the things they will work with.
Files, folders. There isn't a 'desktop', get over it! We aren't talking about how to fix your dremel tool - I'm saying teach people how to turn it on!
When you make fake things like a "desktop" folder or file it makes things worse. It's not real, but it is, but it's not what you think it is. The 'desktop' has become it's own file or folder and isn't becoming the interface we want between us and the programs/files/folders.
If you lock up your teenage daughter she is going to go crazy when she gets a chance. Lock people in the Desktop and when they see the file tree... kiss it good bye.
But if you need to produce a document, spreadsheet or presentation, you're still likely to be able to do it faster and better by sticking with the Microsoft devil you know
First, this is a myth. Faster? How? Programs will run at the same rates[just about]. Oh, I guess he means because Microsoft Windows software is ALWAYS better than anything else?
Let me say that the fastest spreadsheet software I've used was Lotus 1-2-3 with it's menu-worksheet-insert-row style usage. That is the type of app you use when you do data entry for a living. The sucess of 1-2-3 wasn't because of M$, the demise of it's sucess may be though. Sorry guys, some software will rock on WindowsXP - but it's usually the same. And if it's better on XP or 9x or 2000 or NT or CE it is because the developer of THAT software took the time to do it right. You can't blame bad apps [or games!] on Linus or Bill Gates. [safe bet#4945: You can blame bill gates for good apps disappering from the scene]
If the author is speaking of MS Excel, he must remember that Office is middleware! It's not Windows.
As far as selling free software, it's guys like this that make it hard to sell free software. Not just the product, but the idea. Obviously this fella never used apt-get [easier than ls!] or any other type of linux software.
The software generally isn't that hard to use! Middleware products like Koffice or AbiSuite or StarOffice or etc are just as easy/fast as MS Office. They may not import files from one another nicely, but why are you using M$Office anyways?
Linux not an OS? Fine... it's not a game though. I'll just say it's the best network app ever. I've got it running on the machine that holds my keyboard up [right now] with no mouse,kb, or monitor. I can log in, stream mp3s, chat, IM, whatever... it's so nice networking... mmm sweet networking.
Problem is, how often is there a 'bugfix' or security patch released by Microsoft? If you think often, don't sign up for RHN Errata.
RHN mailed me everyday for two weeks once with 'security' updates.
On the other hand, I've used RHN, and Ximian Red Carpet. RHN doesn't actually update general packages for you - but it does get the priority ones. Use up2date for package upgrades.
RHN does work as a system 'service' where of course Ximian is Gnome based. I've got a box with no keyboard, mouse, monitor or soundcard. Just a power plug and a nic - how can I update Red Carpet on this machine? I'm not going to install x, gnome, ximian and all that for auto updates.
On the other hand... I should just re-install debian. As a 2 year linux user apt gets my vote. Easy to upgrade/update, and so god damn easy to install new packages. Who would think to create such a seemless tool for the RPM world? I've used plenty, but none exist.
"The vague space of the hard disk should not exist for you. Ideally, your machine should be a collection of desktops that you have created and named, that are easy to track via a menu or toggle button, and are each understandable because they follow the same rules and offer the same limitations."
"Yes, yes...you could even store those named desktops in a tree-like structure. Brilliant."
This is got to be the best response this this article yet. Instead of starting a new thread I must say here that this guy is jumping ahead of the game.
The desktop isn't fixed yet! It's not close to done. It isn't smart enough. I think that eventually we will need/want/have desktops that are smarted and more interactive. But there needs to be work done between the users, the kernel writers [of all OS/platforms], the userland writers all of it.
As computers get 'better' and faster some of us will stray from the bland picture frame desktop. Maybe this guy's idea would work better as his 'desktops' as tiles on The Desktop?
I've already responded saying that this is a silly idea all together. But now I see it as a way to change the way I see my system and I don't like it.
I want to know where my files are, I may want to just look through them. Sorry if that bothers you.
The first time I saw an Apple machine other than an IIe I was very confused by the fact that the actual drive wasn't the 'root' of the system. Even though this is only in idea - it killed me, I was confused. Even Windows (3.1) used C:\!
Now KDE, Windows 9x, and many other use the 'Desktop' as the 'root' of the system. You'll notice that this trick is only performed by the 'userland' and not the actual system. This is because it's common sense. Your computer doesn't want to look for things starting from a folder/directory/area that is actually buried deep within the system!
I say, banish the 'Desktop'! It confuses users. Teach the file tree! Standardize the file tree!
No more systems where programs store themselves anywhere! No more systems that show the drive under the Desktop! No more systems that show other things on the same level as the drive!
Why confuse users? Teach them;
"This is/, it is the root of the system."
"This is/etc where your configuration data is stored!"
"This is/usr - you'll find the actual programs and more there!"
"But this is your Home/My Documents/Desktop. There are others similar to yours, but this one is yours."
"However, it doesn't sit on top of the rest of the system!"
Maybe I don't get it. I thought it would be easier to teach new users things they already understand.
"This is the desktop, it's the top level, well kinda, it's actually in/home/username/.kde/desktop [or c:\windows\desktop or even c:\windows\profiles\username\desktop\ ], but it's the top of your system. Under that is your hard drive... that is where the desktop is kept."
Our team has been secretly doing tests on sperm and it's computer users.
We've found that after we broke 100 Mhz that we were stepping into a new reality. Some of our kids may be mutated because of the frequency produced by the CPU [or computer brain].
We hope this doesn't have a lasting effect on normal citizens, but as more sophisticated humans evolve they will naturally take over the world.
This has been covered and discussed before but now I must ask another question.
If I use SSH on my own machine (or SSH to a shell account) do I get kicked?
One thing though I've noticed is that on Road Runner I've been getting kicked off from my Windows machine because it's using the cable modems USB feature to connect. I could see how easy it is to send a signal to the cable modem that simply says: "Turn Off"
Otherwise, VPN is something that has been not allowed on High Speed access for long now. My other question: How do they know what you are doing?
I seem to get 'kicked' while either accessing binary news groups or ANY filesharing service.
First: With so many groups with such great organization and skills (obviously more than some software makers) this is part of our culture. If you agree with their actions or not - you must realize these could be the Al Capone & Baby Face Nelsons of our time.
Do they really have the press conference saying:
"Today a judge issued warrants for John Smith also known as; Arsdigi..."
and so forth?
That has to be a riot to the persons parents or whoever. They all know he just sits in his house all day.
Yes M$ does buy & sell content. Think Halo for Xbox and PC. M$ bought bungie way before xbox was ready so tha Halo could only be released for xbox - but changed that plan after complaints.
Msnbc is [get ready] my favorite news channel. It's not as slanted as CNN or Fox. CNN only hits some stories [anti-Israel] and Fox is basically run by Trent Lott. Msnbc is good because although they dumb it down sometimes or repeate shows - it just reports what is popular.
It's NBC news and M$ stupidity. NBC is somewhat favorfull of conflict because GE and obvious war-time contracts. And don't let CBS convice you war is good if you disagree, Westinghouse also is the second largest military contractor.
Of course. Passport is built nicely into XP. This will be their next step in taking over the world. Why not put it into something that is BUILT IN to Windows eXpect Problems? Programs => Games => Internet [Hearts,Checkers,Spades]
With the prospect of wireless access, we need something to identify us - but only when we decide to be identified and only to the person we decide to be identified to.
Think about this, you go around town with your laptop. You can connect to a wireless network of some type and shape. Now just like real life, you may be asked for your ID, or some sort of information that will identify yourself to the person or business asking. If you refuse - you don't get what you want either. So lets take this same idea into 'cyberspace' - and don't REQUIRE yourself to be ID'ed
If you want to beat M$ out of this spot of domination - not only do we need to support and back another method of identification, we need to beat them in the content wars.
M$ web sites and services sometimes are pretty, but they lack in content. Stray from doing business with sites that back Passport. Don't use HoTMaiL, don't use MSN Zone - but more importantly inspire or create content that will challenge M$ content because they are the last company we want to control this idea.
This is what I mean, while Miguel is envolved with Gnome etc. and those projects extend to UNIX, UN*X, Solaris?, Linux, etc.
The page states he worked on the Kernel project for a while - and he supported making IE open source. I doubt he wants to be labled with UNIX a name that is different than Linux because of a restricive trademark concept.
I know, open source, nothing to hide. We can all see the code and which way it's going.
But I don't understand this interview on MSdn! Why even do the interview? Was he given sodium pentathol?[sp]
But in the first line the interviewer says that he's into UNIX, but isn't UNIX the proprietary version that we all want to get away from? Read:
Summary: In this interview, Miguel de Icaza, the founder of GNOME and Ximian, talks about UNIX components, Bonobo, Mono, and Microsoft.NET.
But my favorite [in the closing about the author]:
Dare Obasanjo is a senior at the Georgia Institute of Technology working towards his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. He spends his free time posting to online forums like Slashdot, Kuro5hin and Advogato, as well as writing various articles on programming and software. He has interned for various companies including Radiant Systems, i2 Technologies and Microsoft, and is currently debating the merits of a graduate degree but will most likely end up in Redmond when his time at GA Tech is over.
Posting on/.? I guess I can expect a fanboy reply to this post.
First - I don't think this is going to be used to catch one 'terrorist'. Not saying that it's going to be a complete failure... but that they are more using this to go after those 'Drink or Die' types. [makes sense, we are getting ready for DRM right?]
Second - Get out your history books and find the word communist. Scratch out all references, and put the word terrorist over it. Read that. That is what is going to start.
Everyone applauded Bush after the attacks on Afghanistan and we love it when he makes those jokes, but I don't think he's the right person to be in that position. Boundries will be overstepped. John Ashcroft... what a joke, should be be John Stalin.
Also, I think I may have this 'virus' because everytime I try to download something from alt.binaries.pictures.centerfolds.playboy my USB cable modem goes off. Something doesn't seem right here.

I've supported hardware generated 'keys' for a long time now.
I think that taking things such as CPU temp, firmware numbers, bios version number, RAM size [free or total] to create a 'key' would be nice. Other dynamic numbers such as cpu usage, disk throughput, computer uptime, etc would be great to create a secret key. [and even help create a public key]
But! They must be removable, via disk or a card [credit card or memory stick]. And it can't be authored by someone who would possible 'phone home' with the key. M$ is known for phoning home with some of it's apps and controlling things in your PC that you don't want them to control.
Ever installed IE? It goes to MSN right away. We have no idea what type of information they are sending because no one can see the code. There isn't an option of turning this off. You get your home page back next time - but it is too late. Ever went to hotmail.com on a pc that has MSN Mes.? Why is it that the program shows up in your system tray only seconds later? I never started it!
My point is, this is a great idea in theory. I would like a system that lets people buy software or media online. This is something that we all want. It is possible to stream full length movies to broadband users. Netbroadcaster.com [pop up city] has movies such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Refeer Maddness", classics that someone would be willing to pay a few bucks to watch [you work out the business model]. It's possible.
The problem is, no one is moving towards formats that work [divx;-)] because they aren't going to cash in. No effort is being made towards being open.
But in practice we all know that this system will keep you from backing up any type of media or software that you like - keep down artists that don't sign with ??AA companies and so on.
It's not about DRM, it's about control. If this system is implemented I hope we don't ever pay for computers again. Why should we, we will pay through the nose just to use it - even though we won't be able to control a thing.
So when this whole thing comes out beware of this simple saying:
"All your OS are belong to us"
lol. when I had 56Gay it was fine for streaming [how do you think Real got so big?]
If these X million dialup users aren't happy, then what the fuck are they doing downloading media?

If you've got something to say, just come out with it.
I don't want you to hint around... what the fuck are you saying?
Well, at least you can walk right onto the 'Redmond Campus' if you play your cards right.
Why not work at M$ for a while and make a nice fortune. Then later leave for your true love.
Follow the money. Think Bill Gates is so rich, and it's mainly based on M$ stock.
We can all see the code and which way it's going.
.NET.
/.? I guess I can expect a fanboy reply to this post.
But I don't understand this interview on MSdn! Why even do the interview? Was he given sodium pentathol?[sp]
But in the first line the interviewer says that he's into UNIX, but isn't UNIX the proprietary version that we all want to get away from? Read:
Summary: In this interview, Miguel de Icaza, the founder of GNOME and Ximian, talks about UNIX components, Bonobo, Mono, and Microsoft

First - I don't think this is going to be used to catch one 'terrorist'. Not saying that it's going to be a complete failure... but that they are more using this to go after those 'Drink or Die' types. [makes sense, we are getting ready for DRM right?]
... \\\

Being board I've tried to click on all the news links provided in your story.
Unfortunatly I can't find anything - in every browser [IE, Mozilla and Netscape] I get a "host not found" error...
... weird.
But at least now when I say that they [Big Brother] are watching us I have proof and people won't say I'm crazy.
