How can someone steal your identity? Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number, credit card number or other identifying information, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.
No, I understand that you have the right to quote copyrighted works. This doesn't fall under fair use AFAIK, but still it is your right.
However, for years people have had to write things down and now that we have computers don't act like you can't do so. Not to mention the fact that you can just "tile" the windows and transcribe the content into your favorite text editor.
I run a website and I would love to cut and paste portions of lots of books. Would be great elsewhere too, especially when fighting with people here on slashdot. That being said it should be noted that without the service existing you would have to visit the library or book store to view the inside of any one of these books.
The headline should have just said:
"Publishers Don't License Your Work To Google"
It's a shame because my local news (who is tech stupid) has already been singing the praises of this new service.
Well, you can browse a few pages, learn more about the topics explored by the book, buy it, or commit a selection to memory. To further protect your book content, printing and image copying functions are disabled on all Google Print content pages.
I don't see the big deal. As long as they let me still use "back", "forward" and "exit" I'll be happy. Sure it sucks that you might have to buy a book or write down your favorite quote, but it's free as in gratis at this point.
Amazon only lets you get about 3 pages into a book and usually you can't leave the introduction.
It needed to be said, what you pointed out that is.
Identity theft is just a term used to scare the crap out of people. It isn't like the person is going to start showing up at work for you and attending family functions - they are just using your bank account or credit card information.
If I steal your credit card and use it I'm not taking your identity - I'm committing fraud by acting as you. That is the way my state has always looked at it. I should know, I've known many people who've gone to jail for that exact crime. AFAIK there is no one sitting in jail for the crime of identity theft...
this just looks like breaking DRM to get stuff for free.
You are 100% right.
It isn't about "security" or even "fair use" it's about the ability to cut and paste, save and print someone else's content without their permissions.
I could understand if you owned the books but you don't. Sounds like a good way to bite the hand that feeds you.
If you are really concerned with Google messing with your browser... don't go to any Google domain, ever. Add an entry in your HOSTS file for google, froogle, gmail, gbrowser and whatever else you'd like.
It's a free service, free in the sense that you are free not to use it.
If someone like bob barr endorses Badnarik, this could get REALLY interesting.
I suspect that would be the end of the Libertarians...
Bob Barr is an asshole who paid for his (ex?)wives abortions and then ran on a Pro-Life platform. A known adulterer who called for the head of President Clinton when he was accused of such things.
Oh, could go on but I realized Bob Barr is not worth it.
We are working on our next generation Enterprise Desktop currently called Novell Linux Desktop which will feature a KDE desktop as well as a GNOME desktop.
Novell Linux Desktop heh? Good, I'm all for more distributions which I know how to pronounce. Being that I only see these names on the Internet and no one around to talk about Linux I'm often at a loss when trying to come up with fancy ways to say the names when I do encounter a user.
At school we did have one "Linux" class, although it should have been called "The VI Editor", where the teacher refered to Red Hat and Linux as one in the same. His pronunciation of Suse bothered me as he said it like 'Sue-say', where I prefered 'Suzy'.
You don't even want to know about the d-bee-ann vs deb-e-an fights we got into.
It has clips from Going Upriver as well as some other tidbits. It's provided by MoveOn so you get a few copies of their infamous ads with it. I ordered one when they were still free and have watched a few parts.
Cool thing is that it comes with a few fact sheets and a Kerry - Edwards bumper sticker if you want to show your support in that way. Here is a list of the stuff that comes with it. I'm not completely sure if it has been authorized by Kerry himself, it just seems to be another MoveOn attempt at regime change.
It's the same frustration Matrix fans felt when seeing the sequels--"What the fuck? *I* could have done better than this!"
Hey, I'm as big a Matrix fan as the next person but I don't agree with that statement. Sure, the end of the last one pretty much sucked but the movies were good IMHO.
The architect, that was awsome... the second one is the best if you ask me. But you didn't so I'll be going now.
At first it seemed like a bad idea all around, you know "another" video game movie, but at least this is one game that could have a good movie made from it.
Of course the first 30 minutes will be all about how we got on Mars, bringing us up to speed and then the rest of the movie will be gibs, gibs, gibs...
What has bothered me more is the people who submit stories like this:
"China Daily reports that researcher Tuofu Zhu has discovered two women in an HIV Research program that are immune to the disorder via a mutant gene."
when it should be:
"China Dailyreports that researcher Tuofu Zhu has discovered two women in an HIV Research program that are immune to the disorder via a mutant gene."
I know it is silly but the link should go on the verb reports if there is a link to an article. This one is just an example, but there are others out there which are going too far. Not too long ago I couldn't figure out what should be linking to what - there were 5 links in the story and I had to open them all to RTFA!
A trademark is an identification of goods or services which may be a word, phrase, acronym, logo, or other symbol. Manufacturers use trademarks to distinguish their products from others. A trademark does not give exclusive rights over the product to its owner; it merely prevents others from using the mark in commerce.
In the U.S., a trademark can be registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for 10 years and 3 months, and can be renewed every ten years.
Wouldn't everything that can be thought of already be covered under prior art?
God, nature, what have you, will already have all the prior art claims he/she/it wants.
From TFA:
Enter the October 4, 2004 announcement that two Americans were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering how people can recognize and remember an estimated 10,000 smells, ranging from smelly garbage to expensive perfume.
The two researchers, Dr. Richard Axel and Linda B. Buck, won the prize for scientifically describing how odor-sensing proteins in the nose translate specific tastes and smells into information in the brain.
Their breakthrough stemmed from a 1991 discovery of a family of genes devoted to producing different odor-sensing proteins, called receptors, in the nose. Their work showed that people have a few hundred types of odor receptors, each of which can detect only a limited number of odors.
When a person sniffs cologne or fresh chocolate chip cookies, for example, a mix of different types of molecules flows over the receptors in the back of the nose. That activates an array of the receptors, but only those primed to respond to those particular molecules. The brain notes which receptors are activated, and interprets this pattern as the smell.
Besides... how can you patent my nose and its functions?
I agree, I've got access to a "virtual library" at school that will let me search plenty (1000's) of tech books from many different subjects. PHP to Active Directory is covered.
Problem is however that I can't hold it, take it to the bathroom, or glance at it when I'm typing. Really sucks.
I've only used it maybe 3 times for school and every other time I prefer web sites that are actually formatted for the screen.
Many of these books can also be found on eDonkey or Gnutella by doing this search:
You don't get it.
Fraud:
A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.
or:
An intentional perversion of truth for the purpose of obtaining some valuable thing or promise from another.
Or better from the FTC site:

Question #5 states:
What can I do with books that I find?
Well, you can browse a few pages, learn more about the topics explored by the book, buy it, or commit a selection to memory. To further protect your book content, printing and image copying functions are disabled on all Google Print content pages.

9. In Soviet Russia GNU/Linux boxes run Chris Schlaeger!
There is also a DVD that only costs the price of shipping over at https://www.kerrykit.com/
It has clips from Going Upriver as well as some other tidbits. It's provided by MoveOn so you get a few copies of their infamous ads with it. I ordered one when they were still free and have watched a few parts.

From Tommy Boy;
Chris Farley: "Oh my God, killer bees!"
Yes, you can renew them over and over but once it expires it is open to everyone.
If you don't renew Coke, for example, then I can hurry up and snatch it up. Like domain registration. It expires so keep an eye on it.
Where do I sign up?
It's the same frustration Matrix fans felt when seeing the sequels--"What the fuck? *I* could have done better than this!"

Thanks though.. play again sometime.

No... I believe it was because the CIA had learned of an earlier "Cat Stevens" CD purchase the player had made...
Wrong...
Trademarks do expire and sometimes companies forget to reapply which causes plenty of trouble all around or they steal peoples work. It is far from perpetual.
Ok, on your tab and the division of labor is a heck of a lot different from what my nose & brain has been doing for millions of years.
Ok, prior art: Australopithecus africanus, Homo ergaster, Homo habilis!
God, nature, what have you, will already have all the prior art claims he/she/it wants.

Anyone else hear that echo?
What I'm saying is this: people are voting just to vote most of the time.
Are they really informed?
No matter what you try to say or do most voters aren't informed... it is that simple.
