I honestly don't think family has much to do with, it is more a show of "5ki11z". It is simply a kid wanting to show the world/friends that he has the power to "h4xx0r" (crack) into a system or cause a denial of service. Quite honestly, I don't think this kid is much different from he predessors, it is just about time and place.
I don't know about this case but why is it far fetched that his home life had some sort of influence?
If he didn't think he got the recognition at home, at school or with his friends why not take it out on someone else. Why not try to show his skills, or what little ones he had.
As I've posted before. We all were dying to get high speed unlimited service. So they gave it to us and some companies didn't limit the speeds (enough).
Now that they have failed in their business model everyone is upset. I understand there is issues (and I won't go through it again).
But if BMW caved in and tried to push out cars for 17 grand then found out latter they screwed up everyone would say.. "Oh well".
What gets me is that people are acting as if Comcast and the rest are losing money every month. There are still those out there "browsing" on Cable and xDSL.
So what is the moral of the story? If you are starting an ISP look at these factors:
How many customers you have (or could get, consult with your marketing team)
What do you pay for your side of the bandwidth
What is the most your customers can download at the capped or maximum speeds
Now find out how much you should charge... if you can't get it right then don't go into the business. It isn't hard to hire some consultants. If you have to spend a little profits to upgrade your network then so be it, it's part of the game. (A former ISP which I was a customer of went for four months without making any net profits because of upgrades, among them getting 7 Quake servers)
I wish I had more time to debunk your idea of those dirty users getting what they pay for.
Guns kill, mp3's don't. I mean you pretty much named it: Safety Devices. Those devices aren't an attempt to get people to stop buying and owning guns - the idea is to keep the many children who are killed by accidents safe.
Cigarrete companies aren't in the wrong, the law is. There is no reason for tobacco to be legal in this country. We have a system called the FDA which regulates what products are safe for consumption and which are not. The problem I have is the double standard where someone can buy a pack of cig's, which have no value except their "taste", and not other drugs. If you can't admitt that it's a drug you can't be a smoker. Cigarretes are more addictive than coccaine (and contain far more toxins). We also sell beer and liquor but can't get things like pot. I hope that we could have a system where consenting adults can do what they want but it isn't going to happen when so called "Big Tobacco" and companies like Busch are the biggest contributers to the anti-legalization of marijuana. Do I really have to bring up the fact that other objections are being made by insurance companies who no longer want to cover reckless behavior. Sure, smokers (sometimes) are consenting adults but every pack sold costs this country over seven dollars per pack. That isn't any longer a consensual crime...
But who said anything about MS you asshole? IIRC my rant was about media industries trying to change patents. There is no reason for this.
I'm not using the gov't to push any agenda. If someone has broken current laws then they should be punished. AFAIK there isn't one person who has suggested changing the law (about MS) except MS. In their situation they are also trying to get lawmakers to force their idea (DRM OS et. al.) on everyone else.
I just want the gov't to do it's job and not turn a blind eye to the big guys while many (of us consenting adults which are in prison because of the "war" on drugs) little guys are paying the price.
(South American) Drug lords don't commit acts of terror. They have badges on their arms like all "legal" fighters. They use guns and don't recklessly kill citizens (there are a few cases where low ranking members do commit acts of terror, this fact I won't ignore. Usually these acts are on foreigners who go to "convert the masses")
From everything I've read on the topic the terrorists in South America is the USA, specifically the CIA. They are the ones doing covert operations to take down the drug regime(s).
It's a rebellion. Just because they fight the status quo doesn't make them terrorists.
Any nation in the world who can safely cut ties from us, the U.S. should.
We are in the business of smashing you up and getting our multi-national companies in there and rebuilding (and getting all the profits or owning you in the end).
I'm eager to cut ties from the U.S.A. and I'm a citizen.
Sure, you're thinking; "How can you say that after September 11th? - We are at war you anti-American scum". To you I say; "Fuck off, I can challenge my leaders and their politics at anytime"
The sad thing is that I know I'm putting my money in a bank.
I never knew I was putting my information in Microsoft's information store...
Sure, we see signs of this and that but we have no clue what they are really doing. For all I know they could be key logging everything I right now. We simply can't tell because they are bigger than Jesus.
You could have attacked me on other levels but you got me in the wrong spot.
My statement of "six months" was concerning crap - that is it. A joke, ha ha funny. Some music out there is popular for about a week while the music industry claims piracy has robbed them of future sales - pure crap.
--
Sampling doesn't require permission or licensing. I've got a cousin who was sued for sampling a song - which was 30 years old - actually playing the notes in reverse. They had no case and as soon as he hired a lawyer (a bad one) they dropped the charge. You really answered your own question. The reason one artist can rip off another is because a company can't sue itself. They turn a blind eye.
As if Microsoft would sue their own Comcast cable or MSNBC ventures... --- I understand that the spirit of the GPL is "copyleft" while it is in fact a "copyright". It's not that hard to understand.
Why ask the law makers? Shouldn't they be asking Philips (and Sony) and Toshiba (Sony and more) anyways? They are the ones who own the IP.
Why is it they can dictate the market...? Just because of piracy?
Can I make a statement without asking a question?
So let me get this straight. I come up with an idea and patent it (sorry guys). It really helps an industry for years, they make billions of dollars. Suddenly my patented idea is one part of a ten step piracy process and they come along and make me change it?
Fuck them... come up with your own idea ??AA. Considering that Philips and Toshiba (Sony and more) came up with technology they should dictate the terms... but that isn't happening.
??AA needs to just die or come up with their own methods of selling us their crap.
As far as I can tell, the tightening and extension of copyright law over the 20th century is correlated with a deterioration in quality art. Many of the greatest works of history were created without the benefits of copyright protection.
Works of 'art' such as the Mona Lisa are in fact protected, not under "copyright law" but by other rules.
Any artist can go to the Louvre and copy the Mona Lisa. They can't however use the same dimensions and other specifics so that they can't sell them as originals.
Digital copies can't be made, obviously, but their art equivalent is outlawed.
Sure 100 years is too long. IMHO 50 is even too much. Copyrights in many cases shouldn't last 6 months.
But on an aside... why can musical artists (who work for the RIAA in effect) "sample" others music but we aren't allowed to take advantage of our fair use rights?
2002-05-06 10:30:25 Xbox Hacked? (articles,games) (rejected)
Many console warez groups have been doing this for a while. The story I submitted even had a link to a video of people playing ripped games but I guess it was to "weak" for the Slashdot editors.
A quote from a console site I visit:
Enigma Xbox modchip - 69.00 USD (~47.39 GBP) Xtender xbox modchip - 79.00 USD (~54.26 GBP)
And this:
Xtender ModChip Specs!!!!!!
The chip is made up of a lattice chip and an eeprom and is much like the neo4 in design
What is funny I'm watching the last 2 minutes of the "Empire Strikes Back" as of this moment.
Oh, there is the theme... it's over.
Anyways. Does anyone else see Linus and Cox as Luke and his sis (sorry Alan) fighting Bill (The Emp) and Paul (Vader)?
Seriously... it became very clear hearing Lando talking about how they are too small of an operation to show up on the Empire's radar. Too bad linux is on the MS radar.
Well, I guess you could further it... Xerox as the Jedi Counsel and Jobs as Obi-wan. Gates turns to the Dark Side....
Feel free to further the story and point out more.

I know we are all off topic but I love Eddie Izzard.
In fact I downloaded that record and gave it to a few family members so that they could hear it... sorry Eddie but they loved it and bought more.
The only reason I felt that I could do such a thing is because I know how long CD-R's last (in houses with kids who don't respect CD's it's not long).
You get to eat today troll!
Too bad Columbus neither discovered or did the rest.
The latter Spanish (the same which killed anyone non-Catholic, same years) are the ones you think of.
I guess you forget the fact that Columbus was looking for India and China.

Let me just add this about guns: Many gun makers ACTUALLY back laws concerning safety devices.
The only people who usually object are people who want to stash more weapons than the army.
On a side note, why is it that so many people read the second amendment to the letter while the fourth amendment has been under attack for so long?
What? (AC, of course you are baiting me)

I guess you deny the fact that we are in the business of nation building or you just ignored it?
When we put 14 year old girls to work making Nike shoes for a few bucks a day we pretend it's for "their" good.
Cynical!=Idiot
Huh?

Who said anyone copied anything?
Record companies count losses on things that don't exist and things which may never be copied.
What, no White Castles?
That is why I love this side of the country.
I forgot about Meth, honest.
About the Coke it's not terrorism it's a war.
The Drug Lords are bad guys but so is the gov't. I didn't forget or ignore that fact.
We just make it worse because we are starting the next arms race there.
Instead of fighting drugs at home we are trying to take it down south.
You are completely right.

Show me where drugs help fund terrorism.
Heroin yes, it comes from the region where our (USA's) enemies are from. They may profit from drug trading.
Coccaine - No! Coke profits go to... you guessed it! Drug lords. Their interests are greed and their enemy is their own government.
Pot - crazy! Much pot (that I've seen or smoked) comes from my own state. Grown and sold here. So who are these terrorists?
Geez, at least the right wing has someone to distract us from what they are really doing.
This is just a silly, stupid idea.
Why ask the law makers? Shouldn't they be asking Philips (and Sony) and Toshiba (Sony and more) anyways? They are the ones who own the IP.
