Ok, I guess that isn't something I've understood before hand. I din't know that Red Hat, Debian, etc worked with pre-compiled kernels. But that makes a helluva lot of sense considering it would kill install time.

Don't get me wrong, I've configured and compiled the kernel before. I even get it to boot... all the way. It just seems that I screw up when it comes to network cards or the like.

I am going to poke around with this distro. Seems perfect for my older K6-2 that mainly sits there waiting for me to log in.

My point is, the same old song and dance [Aerosmith] that we hear about it being ripped off is perpetuated by people who are racists. [usually]

Yes, there is sampling, yes there is full 'beat-stealing'. But 99% of the time people are getting paid for it. Do you think a big time commercial guy like Master P [whom I don't like] is going to risk his multi-million dollar empire by copying a few drum hits? No... the original artists get points on the album and get paid depending on album sales.

Seriously - just because someone makes an overgeneralization towards rap music, it doesn't mean they're racist.

No, it makes them prejudice :-)

    1) Steve Miller Band: Your RIAA list proves nothing. Look at the top part of the list. Music sales != good music.

    2) So classic rock, and only classic rock is the true music? Most artists are about selling their product... music. Listen to the music next time. Sure, lots of hip-hop is commercial, but much more isn't. Tupac for example has some of the most profound things to say about society, that I've ever heard. I guess it's a matter of listening and not judging until you hear it.

    3) Vanilla Ice was sued because he ripped off the beat. He claimed that it was different because he, or someone, added on beat every X seconds or whatever. Other artists that sample give full credit, and the record company gives 'points' on the album sales to compensate the 'rip'.

    4) If you haven't noticed there is a huge business behind all that music you hear. Plenty of times rappers come up [to stardom] with only lyrics. When they hit the RIAA-fan some white guy in a suit thinks that it would be cool to use the twangs from Stairway to Heaven.

    5) Yes, I'm defensive. When I hear this 'rip-off' argument it's being produced by some racist piece of shit. I'm not Black, and that isn't why I jumped.

    6) "I'm sure there must be some merit..." Exactly... you don't know because you haven't listened to it.

One thing I can say with confidence though, rock and roll [in general] is a blatant rip-off of other's work anyways. How many times have I listened to covers? By respectable artists, like Jimi Hendrix or even the Beatles? I mean, this is the whole song that is ripped off. The genre was ripped off. 'Nuff said.

All in all, I'm still a good classic rock fan. Just keep that Steve Miller bullshit away from me.

Hell, he could be breaking our encryption. Right now he's reading your lame PGP encoded e-mails about that rash.

Seriously though, there are two major points here: Terrorists want you to read the contents of their hard drives. They do the things they do for attention/a message/for fun/whatever. And two, they already used encryption of sorts... when they bombed the WTC the first time they spoke in code on the phone.

Security through obscurity? No. Why bother encrypting ever letter and white space when you can change a few words and render the conversation useless to an outside listener.

Cryptography is nothing new, and wasn't invented for the computer. It goes way back, and takes many forms. Nothing you can do about that.

  7. My complaint. on Review of Sorcerer GNU Linux · · Score: 4, Insightful

Everyone here seems to point out that the time it takes to compile the complete system is the problem. I mean, isn't this the price to pay for optimized software? Isn't this what [plenty of] people want?

Sure, it's gonna' take a while to compile X, KDE and the like. But this is the other half of the operating system, many people will be using this exclusively, right? Wouldn't you want that to be optimized? It's the GUI, in my experience, the most demanding part of the system.

But, I'm just a user. The whole thing sounds damn cool. I don't mind taking a day to compile *all* the software, just don't make me sit there in front of the machine the whole time hitting 'Y' and enter.

The thing that intimidates me [still, yes] is the fact that I have to configure the kernel. I have never really got this to work for me. I think [complaint coming] there should be an choice for "Auto-configure" or "Configure Now".

I'll understand if this isn't possible, but that seems to be the only thing in my way. I'm still going to download this and try it. The kernel config gets me though. I always seem to leave something out.

Question: Are we using the same config utility that comes with the kernel tarballs? And does the configuration menus come up blank or does it 'best-guess' and let you add and remove the things you need?

Shaggy Blatantly Ripped off Steve Miller Band (Listen to ANGEL and then The Joker, my lord!),

Steve Miller Band? Come on! Shaggy has had way more 'hits' than them... they are basically one hit wonders. Whoever ownes the rights to SMB songs needed the cash, trust me. But, just because two songs sound similar doesn't make them the same. Plenty of songs are ripped from each other... you just didn't bother to listen close enough because it's not rap vs. classic rock.

and countless other rappers decided that other *good* classic rock songs didn't actually deserve their copywrites.

It's copyrights and since you are obviously a racist, you should know that the only Rap song that didn't pay to use the beat [etc] is Ice Ice Baby.

But while we are on the subject, most Rap songs don't take beats or lyrics from classic rock songs. They take many of their beats from Funk songs. They also take their beats from other rap songs.

No one ever points out that Country songs take from Classic Rock songs. Just noticed that.

People get paid... this isn't a rip off, it's business. I like Classic Rock first, but I'm also a Rap fan. Sometimes I don't like the 'new' songs, but at times I find myself applauding the 'new' song for the work they've done.

Look at "Changes" by Tupac. It's a good song if you listen to the lyrics. If you don't like it, I'm sure there are other reasons.

  24. Desktop Myth on 2.4, The Kernel of Pain · · Score: 5, Insightful

He seems to think 2.4 is fine for desktop systems but is only now, after a year of release, approaching stability for high-end use.

I don't get it. I use Linux on the desktop. I have to admit that I don't run linux on my main machine. This is only because I've taken my second hard drive out, and put it back into an older machine. [sorry, wine doesn't like Red Alert 2]

Before I did this though, I ran 2.4 kernels on my desktop. None of the problems I may have had were with the kernel. Problems I had were mainly with certain applications and when I pushed them to their limits. Pan, for instance, crashed a lot on me, but that was because I was downloading gigs per day. A simple Pan upgrade fixed that.

In my humble opinion, 2.4 is prime for the desktop. Linux is more than ready for the desktop. I know he says it's ready for the desktop, but not ready for high end systems. To me 'high-end' is what you ask of a computer. I've got a 333MHZ running Red Hat 7.2. The computer is running webmin, proftpd, apache, and many mail daemons. I must also mention that SETI runs 24/7, it only has 64 MB of RAM. It never goes down, it never 'crashes', and is up as long as there is power running to it.

So... it's ready for the desktop? Sure, 2.4.x is prime. All the drivers I've needed supported are there. Even my >$50 webcam.

The question of 'desktop' use isn't with the kernel though. Desktop users don't patch or compile the kernel... how many times do they do it in *indows or MacOS X? They install complete distributions. IMHO, again, the only thing that keeps Linux off the desktop is easy program install. RPM has killed itself with dependencies, and apt-get is console based. Apt-get is waaay better, and it has worked wonders on my Red Hat machine [apt-rpm]. The problem is not being able to download an app and install it like *indows.

Solve this and I will sit outside my local computer store and hand out CDs. I don't know about high end systems, but dammit!, desktop users are ready... format that *indows crap and get a real OS!

Gimme a good apt-get gui... or have the system run apt-get in the background solving dependencies when needed... my g'ma will have it.
