if you are talking about the kernel prompt, which is something along the lines of `Insert floppy to be used as root...', the cd you made is broken
No, no... since you've installed and used debian so many times you would know I'm speaking of the step between partitioning and installing the base system.
Simply, the CD boots, I can partition and all. But the install craps out when you are trying to install the base system. Basically I've got a CD worth nothing... coaster.
I'm running 750 Mhz Slot A Athlon [classic] on a windoze box. This is a smoking machine even with the huge over head of XP. All the fluffy things don't seem to slow me down.
The difference seems to be the amount of ram. I've went from 128 to 384 and cut my boot time in half, so it seemed. When I dual-booted from this box, linux smoked and I've never seen a faster machine.
My linux box is simply a 333Mhz K6-2. Nothing seems to be slow there. I must admit that I don't run X, quake or etc... but it seems to be enough.
A budget system at 1.4Ghz seems to be a little much. But while we are on the subject, the amount of RAM seems to be low considering that RAM is so cheap.
I could be wrong, I can access the page.. or any page at Linuxwatch.
I tried pointing this out a while ago when we first got news of data scrambled CD's.
I pointed out that this is in direct violation of the standard. I guess they read slashdot, although just a little behind.
If I bought a piece of software that says "Made For Windows XP" and it's comprised of a binary RPM.. I'd be pissed. Microsoft would sue to hell, and there would be a big hub-bub.
Hopefully they won't only produce copying equipment [breaking the DMCA?] but they will also take strong legal action against said companies.
Maybe Philips has a new technology they are working on... maybe they read my huge brainstorm under the Gracenote story... but let's hope not.
Hopefully content protection companies, like M$ is trying to be, aren't behind their backs telling them to swear off these data scrambling techniques to push their own.
I downloaded, and burned the last release onto CD.
Now I'm having some install problems. The box I'm trying to install to has no floppy drive. The installation tries to find the 'rescue' disk and prompts me to put it into the floppy drive.
This of course is before the installation of the base system. I've looked on the disc[from the prompt], and no image anywhere. So the install farts out and that's it.
I've tried to find a work around on irc, newgroups and the like. No one else seems to have this problem. As I understand it the 'disk' is actually what the CD is booting from.
Does this release fix this problem? Has anyone else had this problem? No one else seems to have this problem... that I've talked to.
I hate to be offtopic here... and I don't mean to point out a problem, and this isn't a troll etc.
I just hope the/. community has some insights.
I really want to get this RPM'n piece of crap off my box. apt-get packagename is so much easier when the only interface with the box is my Doze machine.
We must remember that NVidia had ALWAYS promised to release open source drivers for all their products until about a week before they signed an agreement to supply the hardware to the X-Box... Funny that..
Exactly my point. It seems that most, if not all nvidia cards use the same sort of programming.
If they released the source they maybe opening the xbox to hacking. I support said hacking, but in the business world they don't.
So instead of replying to the rest of the comments posted under me, let me do it here:
Yes, it would be ideal if they opened the drivers. If you want to support companies that do open the drivers, by all means... do so. But please also see that drivers are in fact released and they work a lot of the time.
If you are having problems with the card and drivers, please direct your bug reports and oops's to nvidia. Since they have released some working drivers, maybe they need some help.
Sorry we can't always have it our way, but sometimes we get close.
If you have a problem with the GeForce, and it not carrying on the linux creed, complain to ThinkGeek as well. Ever seen those ads?
While I see your point about open source very well, I can't fully agree.
At least there are drivers available. They could have simply ignored linux like plenty of other hardware vendors and left you to deal with it on your own.
In a fantasy world we would have the source to everything, but that isn't the case. If for say, a company was going to reveal trade secrets, we shouldn't shun them because they are protecting them.
Sometimes we aren't going to get the source. It's that simple. Be happy we have drivers at all really. They did what they could to make you happy.
I believe this is the reluctance to release games and the like for the linux OS, people bitch if it's not 100% Open Source[ed].
It's similar to when you visit something like moviepost and there is a link to Teen Sux and Fux and it's really a link to another pr0n portal site.
I think the difference though is two-fold. Movie post stopped doing this. Picpost, it's sister site also started labeling these types of links as another 'Gallery'. Secondly, this is pr0n site and you expect some underhandedness.
Yahoo[!] is a site that people expect some level of professionalism. I've gotten so many of our family members to use Yahoo as a portal because it's still somewhat lightweight, and easy to use. Yahoo also goes back a long way... to when I was 15 ['95-'96?] and I figured they weren't into this sort of thing.
I guess I should point my family members [read: Newbies] to Google for more than searches... I hope their directory gets better.
1) The name "Emmanuel Goldstein" comes from the novel "1984". Since you apparently haven't read it, you should.
I get the idea of 1984. We are all under the gov't control. They watch us through the TV. Someone throws a hammer through a TV... then the Mac goes no where.
Wasn't it about.NET? I forget.
Believe it or not, there were things going on in the world before 1999!;-)
Five mins ago when I was on the phone with a tech support guy he laughed when I asked if they capped ANY bandwidth.
Contract?
We are talking services. People suggest getting another new feed. That's ridiculous when the ADVERTISE that they have news server/feeds.
And once again... it doesn't cost them a dime to send data from their local office to you. If that were the case then they wouldn't let you leave the TV on all night.
If they advertise something and don't provide it, then you have a case. It's called bait and switch. [false advertising].
In this case it's public knowledge that you are not going to get unlimited access to newsgroups, not a problem. They aren't hiding this somewhere.
BUT... that doesn't change the fact that I [me] don't agree with their choice.
If they want to support alternate news feed suppliers, or even DSL services let them.
This story is almost as bad as what I found today. It goes to show a company will do anything to sell, sell, sell.
I was mirroring DeCSS sites, and I kept coming across the 2600 character Emmanuel Goldstein's name. I know it's a handle, but I knew that one of the characters in hackers is named Emmanuel Goldstein [cereal killer right?].
So I decided to look it up. And the first link in google, was of course the movie's website. I thought they could set this straight.
Now the funny thing... it didn't. The reason it matched "Emmanuel Goldstein +hackers +movie" is because they have quote from him on the front page! To make it worse a link to 2600 is there too!
This is dirty... can't they sue themselves [please] for linking to a site that posted the famous 7 line implementation?
How about this. If you don't like the pricing for the available service, dont use it.
Trust me, I won't.
Companies listen to their wallets not their customers groaning on slashdot.
Well, when the customers run like rats on a sinking shit their wallets will let them know. I don't post this stuff hoping they will read this and realize they are stupid... it's a discussion between nerds, not ISP's.
And it doesn't matter what newsgroup you are interested in archiving, if it is 3 gigs it's 3 gigs no matter what... 3 megs of porn is the same as 3 megs of linux archives... It's the server resources that are the problem.
Exactly my point. But they don't have much to complain about when the news server sits right next to the DHCP server and mail server. [a few miles from your house]. Does anyone here really know how a news server works?
The point is, they can't very well monitor all your bandwidth usage. I've uploaded 3 gigs over IRC in ONE DAY. Now this is traffic leaving the network! If they said, 3 gigs of web usage or ftp usage in three days... it would be a privacy issue.
The point is, it's their server. In their network. Ideally it's in your city, with the data coming ONLY over your cable line. It costs them nothing to run stuff over the line. They don't limit how much TV you can watch right?
If they only want to retain messages for a day or even a few hours... fine. That is server resources.
If all the customers are using USENET this much... wouldn't it make sense to upgrade and make them happy rather than sending them to DSL or other forms of broadband?
When you pay for access... it's all covered. USENET, web, ftp... no matter what you are using. Localized servers however aren't paying for bandwidth for every user... they pay once, store and you download from them. That is the reason they use a local usenet server and not a huge national center server.
They aren't paying for what comes over the cable line... they own that. They don't charge you if you watch to much tv a month. [i should have pointed this out earlier].
I've got digital cable, with HBO on demand... 10 bucks / month and if you watch 'too much' it doesn't go up in price or get cut off. BECAUSE IT'S HOSTED RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD. The data comes over their non-public, non-internet lines. We aren't talkin' T1's or anything.
What they 'owe' you is what they advertise. At least this is known up front [or for us anyways]. The problem is they are setting the market up for these caps, not going with the norm.
Are we getting ready for a new computing future? This is what is promised by USB's supporters right?
Soon we will get computers in components - one thin case with the MB, processor and memory [etc]. 10 USB ports and then you customize... want sound? BAM! Want network? BAM!
Sounds good at first but then I look at all those wires connecting my stereo it scares me. Maybe we'll start getting rack mountable hardware and a rack to make our own 'case'.
Question though: Can I hook up two computers that have USB ports? That would be the killer app... not sound cards, though this looks spiffy.
But the price is a bit much, even the nice one on Thinkgeek is a little high. Will we see lower end soundcards?
if you are talking about the kernel prompt, which is something along the lines of `Insert floppy to be used as root...', the cd you made is broken

(since they just have to replicate their own software)
Yeah, something tells me that they would show up with one CD and install software on all the machines.
One nice thing, if this went through, is that we may actually have another piece of evidence that they are either a monopoly or trying to be one.

oh... oops... it was supposed to be a barnes and noble link.
I guess I posted something else useful.
Data Scrambling
The data is scrambled, that's it. Your copy isn't protected. The copyright is protected already by law.
Copy Protection is bad because you can easily copy the CD onto a tape[like we used to do].
I still like the term: Crippled Product because you can't do things that are guaranteed to you by law.
I tried pointing this out a while ago when we first got news of data scrambled CD's.

I agree with two other respondants... that movie was good.
It's tremors two and three that sucked.
The first time I watched it I was on the edge of my seat.

Hack Proofing Windows 2000 Server
It's fiction... and since it deals with computers I'm guessing it goes under Science.

Don't forget everytime a new version of Windows comes out Symantec gets to sell a million copies of it's software.
I know most people won't agree, but doesn't Symantec stand to make a mint if this is true?
I guess they needed a virus before they released anti-virus software.

Mine work flawlessly until I moved out, left it there for a few weeks and my brother smashed it with a hammer. He didn't know it worked.

Yes, I would.
