It's my pleasure to thank all those who were involved in todays April 1st joke, we certainly had a large number of people going. I'd like to thank taz for letting this go through, altering jade.* and services.*. frink for his servers and the short lived dalnet.*, as well as countless other opers and helpers making it be believable. Special thanks goes out to maloy, Gotharial, taz, Melech, Wuher and Psionic for support and ideas. Let me make this perfectly clear. America Online has not bought DALnet, never had any intent to, nor have any secret discussions been going on. This was simply an April Fool's joke. It would be appreciated if all the joke AOL things that have been created, could be cleared up quickly to avoid confusion. Thank you, Peter/Doc_Z.

why is this even news? gnome has been the the freebsd portlist for a while now. how many freebsd users do you know that would rather download something and do it by hand rather than use the port collection. btw, gnome compiles on freebsd fine. it's not a matter of worry if it's gonna compile, because it will. btw, to all you trolls, this has nothing to do with "bsd dying", as you so bluntly put it. this isn't even a linux vs. bsd war. this is a kde vs. gnome war. maybe all you linux users just wanna take jabs at a faster, more stable OS. you don't realize that most of us freebsd users could care less about what list we are on for being supported. check www.freshports.org if you would like to see what the freebsd community ports to itself without having to wait for lil announcements like this one.

"For ASCAP/BMI/(I forget the third), the important copyright is the sheet music and lyrics. " SESAC is the third one. it's an invite-only organization. ASCAP = American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Just about anyone can join this. BMI = Broadcast Music Incorporated. One of the main differences in these are the way they track radio playback. BMI trusts the radio stations playlists. ASCAP uses a technology (i forgot what it's called) to sample radio from certain reporting stations. They figure out what songs are playing in what rotation. This is one way artists are paid royalties. i forgot what method SESAC uses.

But if I go out and tell the truth about anything that has happened, they have no right to stop me. This is exactly like the situation in the early 1900s with Upton Sinclare. For those of you who don't know, he wrote a book called The Jungle in which he exposed things that really go on behind the scenes in meat-packing plants. His book made a complete revolution and brought about inspections by the USDA. Your goal should be to inform and not to commit slander or libel, which are illegal. If you signed no obligation, I don't see how they can stop you from saying anything. If they do try something, just inform your current employer of the situation. anyway, enough of my ramblings.

the RIAA (note the 2 A's) is just doing their job. They protect against piracy, bootlegging, and counterfeiting. This is the same sort of issue that people faced when warez came about. The people weren't selling the software (or in this case mp3s). They were just giving it away. Software piracy was deemed illegal. Are there still warez? yes. People somewhat try to enforce the copyright laws on software, but I doubt you would get arrested for downloading 1 program. Sure they can check. But it's not often that you see huge companies go after some lil 13 year old punk for downloading a $20 copy of a game. The same will probably be true with mp3s. No one is gonna kill you for having however many mp3s. I just wouldn't make copies and sell em on cds if I were you. =) That will count as piracy. If you went all the way with it and made actual cds and lil booklets it would be counterfeiting.
