Do you fiddle with the settings on your office chair?
Now why would you do that? The chair is not for your personal use, it's the property of the company. It isn't any of the company's business what settings on the chair are most comfortable for you. Personalisation does not benefit the company.

I wish more end users would remember that.

The computer, just like any other accessory you use in your workplace must allow for some personalisation.
As an IT drone, it is not your job to dictate what background picture/colour I have. If having BIG white letters on a black background increases my productivity, you, on behalf of the company, should be happy, even though it means you'll get to spend a few more minutes with me in the event that I need some help.

Dispite what you may have read when reading the BOFH archives, the system administrator should NOT get to dictate every single detail about the computing environment in the workplace.

SMS is very popular with the deaf (at least where I come from). It allows them to communicate just as easily with those with good hearing as other deaf people.

SMS also solves the problem of being globally accepted (just as long as you're not on the North-Western side of the Atlantic pond), and you don't need a special kind of GSM phone to be able to communicate with SMS. Another nice feature is that it works no matter how noisy it is surrounding the sender.

Actually I've found that QT works better with Mozilla than IE.

    Why does it work better?

My machine does not lock up when the QT plugin goes berserk. This has happened to me twice in the last 3 weeks. That may not sound like much, until you take it into consideration that I've only watched 5 embedded QT clips during that time.

Although it didn't lock up completely on those two occasions, it locked up enough to be unusable for me for ten minutes.
TEN MINUTES of not responding oh a relatively new machine (2ghz P4, 1/2GB RAM) is NOT, by ANY means acceptable.

No, we don't get free incoming airtime because landline users pay a fee to call cellular exchanges.

We get free incoming airtime because every CALLER, whether they use a landline or cellphone, pays for the call, the receiver doesn't pay anything.

Note however that this, in most cases, does not apply to roaming, wherein most cases the receiver also pays. In those cases however the receiver only pays for the call transfer. The caller still pays the same amount as he would calling if the phone was on its own network.

  22. Re:Europe on Calling Cell Phones Could Cost More · · Score: 2

    Simple, perhaps.
The question is just WHY. Especially when you look at phones just like any other previous forms of communication.

I mean, unless you explicitly request to pay, you don't pay for letters sent to you.

If you receive a telegram, you are not charged for it.

Being charged for being on the receiving end of a phonecall, to the rest of the world, sounds about as ridiculous as being charged for being on the receiving end of a letter or a telegram.

Also, it just seems a bit backwards not being able to RECEIVE calls just because you've run out of minutes :-).

Hell, with my telecom company, if I don't pay my bills for a couple of months and they cut me off, I'm still able to receive calls for a month IIRC before they completely disconnect my line. Whether the call comes from Nepal og next door makes no difference.
