that there is only one fan in the place (bottom right). Also, looking at the traffic graph, what happened at 8:15? Looks like someone kicked out a plug. An almighty groan must have risen from the crowd about then...
Actually, they do support ethernet-ethernet wireless bridging. I have a Win box, a linux box and a Powerbook all hooked up to the base station with a cheap 8 port router and it works a treat. I use it to do my NAT. Also will serve DHCP too. What bothers me is that they don't have a DNS server in the box. That would make it much more useful. I have to use my ADSL modem to do that.
You can't escape the benfits of globalism

Defining Globalism
·
· Score: 3, Insightful
Namely peace and prosperity. Commerce and communication have essentially brought us these. People who aren't hungry and have jobs tend not to fight each other. Knowing the facts and understanding what's going on around you makes you less able to be manipulated by leaders with their own agenda. It may sound stupid but TV has actually brought around world peace. It's reduced ignorance and brought new points of view to poeple who might not be exposed to them, and along with that understanding.
Globalism is merely more of the same. More commerce and more communication. It means that countries left behind by the prosperity that has benefited the west are more likely to share in it, even if the west gets fatter in the process.
There is of course the dark side of globalism. MacDonald's and any other given multinational,/bin/laden calling for death to the infidels, but how can you fault the benefits? I shake my head when I see people protesting against globalism. Largely they are healthy, middle class youths. Wearing Nike sneakers, Levi jeans and driving to the protest in Fords, etc. If they are serious, why aren't they living in caves, growing their own vegetables?
Globalism is here. We should stop talking about wether it's good or bad and start asking how we can reduce its bad aspects and increase it's benefits.
I think it's unfair to characterise robust debate as fracturing or a lack of unity in the Linux comunity. Isn't it normal for people to disagree on things? It may look like disunity to your average joe, but the fact is that corporations very carefully control what the media knows and what discussions go on behind closed doors. I'm sure everyday people in companies all over the world not only argue till they are blue in the face, but also undermine each other's authority, turn coworkers against their opponent and other nasty political bullshit.
Open software has an open process. That is a strength. Suggesting that just because there is disagreement in the Linux community means that it is less co-operative or cohesive than Microsoft or anyone else is utter crap. Open debate and having your own opinions are healthy signs, much better than some coerced worker toeing the company line, idependent of what is technically best.
What you say is interesting, becuase that's exactly what I thought when I looked at X. It all makes far too much sense not to be true. There is no good reason for thowing out the classic OS. Arrogance is the only answer. I guess one of the negative things about Jobs (along with his good points) is that he lets these sorts of things happen, possibly even encourages them.
I really believe that 10 is the end of the Mac. Not the end of Apple, but the end of the Mac as embodied in my Mac Plus: good ideas implemented with flair and design sensibilities. Now it's all macho my scheduler is better than yours bullshit.
You know, you asked no nicely, I thought for a second that I should give it up. But I really do find 10 too hard too use. Maybe I'm too set in my old decrepid technology ways, but I'm just so comfortable with 9 I really don't see any point. The bugs don't bite me, and newer isn't always better.
On the subject of Trolling: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Troll. BUT I have had posts marked as Troll. It's something a bit offensive about/., that an opinion that happens to disagree with what might be commonly agreed is quickly marked as abuse. Have the politically correct been released from the asylums?
Moderators: CONTRARY OPINIONS ARE VALID AS WELL. PLEASE DON'T LEAP TO JUDGEMENT.
Chances are, of course, that this will be marked as a troll post. Sigh.
Granted, System 10 is more stable becuase of memory protection and has better task scheduling, but my 9.2.1 is heaps stable (as long as I don't run MS apps, generally). But I use Macs becuase they're a pleasure to use, and all the little things count. Quartz is loverly and I wish that GX lived on, but they don't improve my work. Pissing around trying to work out how the hell to get 10 to connect to my AFP server and other simple things which seem impossible wastes my time. 10 may have it's own nuances, but they're nothing like 9. What exactly is the big win changing all the subtlities of the UI in an arbitary fashion? Believe it or not, stability and memory protection are incremental improvements for your average user, delivered at great expense of it's usability.
On the subject of the earlier systems - they were fantastic. Why wouldn't they be when the only alternatives were DOS and a very broken early Windows.
More evidence that Apple has given up on providing the best user experience. I'm loathed to move to OS X becuase it's not really a Mac OS. OSes 1-9 were a product of careful design, internally and externally. The little interface things (mouse clicks behave completely differently in so many circumstances), the robustness of installing software and fiddling with the system.
Years of experience went into tweaking the OS to be just right. Now it's all gone. They thing making it pretty is enough. Now we've been reduced to being victims of shell scripts missing quotes and zapping our hard disks. Sob. It no better than a Window's box now. Sob.
Some people are pointing out that the revised Firewire spec only supports 800mbps over the existing twisted pair cables, but does anyone know of how the rev can be implemented? Is there the possibiliy of a backwards compatible combination twisted pair/optical plug, or can two plugs service the same port? This might mean that new macs might have an optical plug in addition, which would be very cool (and fast).
- MS will be an undefeatable monopoly and there won't be much choice but to use their services and products.
- Their EULAs and Terms of Service will restrict you from doing anything that might reflect poorly on them.
- The DMCA will make it a criminal act to circumvent any measures they take to maintain control.
Monkeyboy for President! Waiting for the Microsoft stormstroopers to come and liberate me from this oppressive freedom of choice...
Still doesn't make it incompatible. Anyone could write their own stack to go with their add-on. And it doesn't preclude Apple from providing support once the markey heated up a bit from its morid state.
I guess it's unavoidable in the age of TV and instant global communication, but when a big story breaks, must the entire (global) media go nuts and into a weird sort of paralysis? Non-stop 24 hour coverage on all free to air stations. Commentary about the event, about what it means, about why we did/didn't see it coming, who's to blame, then commentary about the commentary. Wild rumours flying about. It's almost like journalism takes a break. People report anything to fill the space. It might be interesting for a few hours, but goes on for *days*. Before the attack it was Princess Di dying and probably others I can't remeber. I generally want it to go away so I can watch meaningless drivel and turn off my brain, espacially when it's something as horrible as this, I really don't want to think about it 24/7. And I wonder if others should either given the emotional response: unjustified attacks on Arabs on the street and their churches, ramapant nationalism and talk of going to war. For all the horror of the situation, this sort of fervour is what drove the fanatics to park a couple of Boeings in the WTC in the first place.
You really have to ask yourself some nontechnical questions here: If you had invented a compression scheme with this sort of performance, what would you do?
Would you:
(a) hook up with a small time Australian film director and raise a lousy $US25m
(b) go directly to the US and find a bunch of VCs with very deep pockets indeed
Would you:
(a) find a gulible accountant to swear it was OK
(b) register worldwide patents and let them readem and weep
Would you:
(a) showcase your wares in that hotpot of high technology, the Hard Rock Cafe in seedy, inner city Darlinghurst, one street away from the lowest class prostitutes, their junkie boyfriend pimps and various other street urchins
(b) do it in style reflecting the fact you were about to get really, really, rich
Would you:
(a) get wide coverage from the world's high tech media
(b) get coverage from a web site that covers cinema
I feel sorry for John Tatoulis, he's been duped into being the front man on a $25m scam, he's probably "not very technical". Who is the guy who claims to invented this stuff? Why's he so shy?
I think you're being a bit harsh here, pal. I don't think anyone is going to roll out 25xes to replace P4 desktops. For all the quite obvious reasons you stated, and more, it wouldn't work. But if you wanted parallel processing with low overheads (power, cost, development time) this chip is very interesting indeed. It is if course a prototype, not even cast in silicon it would seem, but as a concept it has plenty of merit. Any of the problems (heat, memory bandwidth, fp performance) could be ironed out and tweaked according what your design goals were.
you copyrighted your preferences, then put some lame arse encrption on them, defeatable simply by accessing them through javascript, you could get these guys thrown in jail without bail...
Does it go 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"
What are the chances that this "innovation" will bore you more than the endless road? Couldn't you just use the radio -- maybe some nice techno, always good for driving...
I was going to go to bed, but I think I might stay up and watch and see if eveything goes to hell. But from where? What more can you see other than your own connection slow down? Anyone have any suggestions?
The Register has an article (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/20402.htm l) that says the e550 will cost $560 and the e550/MD (as in Microdrive) will cost $800.
Now you can set how brown you want your CD/DVDs betfore it pops them out the top!
But seriously, a nice hack. Sounds blazingly fast. Maybe it would have sold better in this configuration?
that there is only one fan in the place (bottom right). Also, looking at the traffic graph, what happened at 8:15? Looks like someone kicked out a plug. An almighty groan must have risen from the crowd about then...
Oh. Sorry. That would be nifty, especially if you wanted to link through a wall or to a nearby building. But 10Mbps would be a bottleneck.

... now script kiddies will be able launch denial of service attacks on my video card. But only if it's got a Microsoft driver.
I believe the ancient Egyptians avoiding using XML at the time because of concerns over RAND licencing and prefered the patent-free ideograms.
No, really.

Just Mac bigotry. Bah!
WTF? Since when is bluetooth incompatible with Macs? Is Mr Johnson just really ignorant does he have trouble saying what he means?

That's OK, I'm in Croatia :-)
