It's not a problem of upgrading the OS or the BIOS. Plenty of OS updates have come out for TiVo and they also float down the satellite signal, auto-magically, but the actual decoding of the signal is done with a chip. I find it very difficult to believe that it isn't the same in your PVR (or any other, for that matter).
Not in a hardware-based solution like their current chipset... and don't think that my HD TiVo and I don't wish otherwise.
You can bet I'll be on the phone with a CSR to get some free, upgraded equipment and/or hefty credits. I'm not too worried, though. DirecTV been pretty fantastic about that sort of problem in the past and their publicist has already said they're going to attempt to make everyone happy about the changes.
First, SP2 hasn't caused any problems in the broad range of machines I've seen or dealt with. While I don't doubt the 24% estimate, I sincerely doubt that 76% of machines lack the upgrade as a result of security concerns, which leads me to the second reason...
If approached by someone questioning why the machines aren't up-to-date, the lazy IT manager, feeling backed into a corner, will make an excuse about how he is still evaluating the potential dangers of the controversial upgrade.
Unfortunately, this is the prevailing selfish mindset in the USA... it's not just those other people... it's ME and YOU!
You call it selfish with absolutely zero knowledge of my use.
Who is the "selfish" person? Someone who drives four people in a luxury SUV to a destination five miles away or a person who drives a hybrid, alone, 60 miles each way to work? Are we talking about mpg, or mpg per person?
You will never, ever convince the majority to take your side when you step forward with broad generalizations like those. It simply makes you look like a self-righteous asshole. Thank you for proving my initial point.
While I don't care to feed them, either, the 15+ you listed is computed with the EPA's incredibly flawed testing guidelines. Nobody drives the way that they describe in the test procedures. Since its purchase over a year ago, our Lincoln Aviator, rated at 13/18 hasn't stepped over 13.4 mpg over any distance or terrain. It's still one of the best purchases we've ever made.
Quite frankly, nobody else, especially a complete stranger, is capable of determining my requirements when purchasing a vehicle. I don't attempt to justify or explain my decision, because that would indicate some sort of responsibility to that person. I tell them it was my decision to make and I leave it at that.
My sincere apologies for any perceived insult. At no point was I attempting to belittle you or your projects. Frankly, my reaction was to the implication that because you do not see the value in their project, others won't either. You could have made constructive suggestions or simply chose not to use it, but instead you belittled their project by dismissing it as trivial and unimportant.
As far as I'm concerned, this discussion has very little to do with "GUI tweaks" and more to do with simple respect for people who make their work freely available.
Now, I'd like you to explain to me why it matters what my contributions are? How does what I've contributed change the validity of the question I've posed?
I asked because assigning value to a project is relative. You don't believe that the UI developments in the article are useful. As a GUI developer, I wholeheartedly disagree. Most of the demo work that they are showing off is not just eye candy, but proof-of-concept of new tools that are needed for future GUI development.
I'm certain many people don't list Adventure and D&D character generation as high on the list of priorities. If you believe that there are projects that are more important than this one, go work on them, but don't bitch at someone else just for having a differing value set.
What a waste. A window manager? There are a ton of valuable things they could be spending time on.
A waste? More valuable things? Perhaps, you could enlighten everyone by presenting your project for the open source community?
Lead by example. Otherwise, just be thankful that someone else is using their time and expertise to create something that you're going to download and take for granted.
I just don't see the point of having mono without.net. Its going to drive developers to window
Let's assume that 10% of Windows/.NET developers decide to switch to Linux/Mono and 10% of Linux/Mono developers switch to Windows/.NET. Who do you think comes out ahead?
In the end, if means that developers will be able to port their Windows apps to Linux easier, it can only be a good thing.
YES! I say ban all the commercial PVRs! And use MythTV, or any of the other OS PVR software
Many typical people, some talented geeks included, would rather spend the extra couple bucks for a commercial device than spend their time dealing with one that nobody else is responsible for maintaining.
That aside, straight-out banning of commercial items for open source alternatives is just asinine.
You pay "higher" prices for software and music because the companies know they can get away with charging those prices.
God forbid someone spends their time and efforts creating a product and attaches a price that they feel it's worth. If you don't think it's worth it, don't buy it, but don't imply that it makes the creator evil or somehow becomes justification for stealing it.
I love everything about it, except that the overall shape is nearly symmetrical, top-to-bottom, not just left-to-right. It has a nice look and feels right, but in the dark, I've picked it up so many times and rewound when I meant to fast-forward (or vice-versa). After the split-second of confusion, I have to fubmle around to get it oriented.
For example, an efficient car that runs entirely on fossil fuels versus an innefficient car that runs entirely on solar power. Of course, at that point, one's interpretation of efficiency would be relative.
Perhaps, you should picture the person on the landline sitting on a plastic chair, in an air-conditioned house, with the lights on. I, on the other hand, prefer to use my mobile phone only while sitting in a bird-sanctuary, on a weathered rock, warmed by the sun's rays.
Besides, energy consumption shouldn't be nearly as great a concern as the process by which that energy has been generated.
My carpenter switched from a 15" hammer to a 16" hammer. It's just a tool fer Chrissakes.... Agreed. Besides, the acrylic handle and brushed aluminum head won't look nearly as cool after he hits that first nail.

I, for one, will believe that statement well after he's:
released the E1-E3 DVD Box Set
released the E1-E3 Collector DVD Box Set
released the E1-E6 Super Collector DVD Box Set
released the Remastered E1-E6 Super Collector DVD Box Set
released the E1-E6 Ultimate-Jedi DVD Box Set with Extra Wookie
dead and buried
Even then, I would hesitate to purchase a box set on account of him screwing me over so many previous times.
one of the most insightful posts I've read on this site in a long time.
Increasing the number of options does not mean you increase the number of consumers or profit.
for a couple reasons.

It's quite apparent that geeks can do the Electric Slide in large groups without any new technology.

What other alternatives are there for remote logins?
A car to drive you to the remote location. The car key would be the 'something you have' and the your parking spot would be 'something you know'.
Simple. If it isn't illegal or mired in some sort of media-should-be-free controversy, it's not nearly as cool.
Soon, they will be all referred to as "those lame new Dr. Who episodes when the producer and marketing team were just abusing the real fans"

it will be when your 14 year old boy searches for something for his research paper and gets redirected to pr0n instead.
Is that what he told you? "No, Dad, I was just trying to do a research paper. I had nothing to do with it!"
And these two things are different how?
For example, an efficient car that runs entirely on fossil fuels versus an innefficient car that runs entirely on solar power. Of course, at that point, one's interpretation of efficiency would be relative.

I was going to chide you for being the party pooper who lacks a sense of humor.
stay at home moms have both time and disposable income.
I was wrong. Apparently, you do have a sense of humor.
Women gamers were more likely than men... to have children
In other news, male gamers are more likely to pee standing up.
