the parent post got modded down but shouldn't have. Some moderators don't know the difference between having an opinion and trolling. The post should've gotten modded up as funny anyway! Here is a repost (orriginally by user poptix@work):
You were pretty clear about 'DHCP Client' and 'DHCP Server', FYI a DHCP server is quite different, and uses different protocols than a PPP+Radius+Ascend connection.. You don't see me calling you a dog or cat simply because you're a carbon based lifeform that eats vegetables and meat.
As a side note, if you don't know what the word means either look it up (http://www.dictionary.com) or just don't use it.
DHCP is a specific protocol. There are certainly others. The protocol used is certainly an important fact! It's not like saying "that got photoshopped out" and meaning it could have been done with any graphics program; saying it was configured with DHCP means it was specifically done with a certain protocol a certain way. Its not a general term!
If I had mod points, I mod the above post "Funny". Did someone say Computer Crimes Division and local police department in the same sentance?
Kind of reminds me of in Big Lebowski when The Dude asks the cop of they have any 'leads' about who stole his car. The cop custs up laughing and says "leads? not yet. the chief has us working in shifts to solve this one though!"
seriously, how many local police depts have a computer crimes division?
DHCP? I've had several ISPs, and I don't think I've ever used DHCP over a ppp connection (all the dsl users with pppoe might use dhcp though, i dont know...)
I could imageine them implementing some sort of system so that tourists are given a "net id card" tha grants them temporary unlimited access at net cafes. Maybe even have the net cafe verify passports before allowing people "full access"?
I own an old "power computing" 603e mac clone, and I'd love to see more mac clones. The mac market during the clone era was everything people wanted it to be, direverse and competitive.
Still, while I suppose another company could try and resell briQ's with a macos-loading linux booter, i think it would suck for them that their entire success hinged on apple AND YDL delivering them product - and it would certainly not benefit either of those companies much.
seeing as how these boxes are made by a linux company who is trying to make linux a more dominant OS by providing cool hardware, I doubt they want to enourage running the macos exclusively. Mac-on-linux is fine; users are still running linux. But I doubt we'll see YellowDog shipping a mac-os-only installation anytime soon.
I had to check it myself to be sure, but Ximian really does sell a stuffed monkey. They hide it at the bottom of the merchandise page, because they are ashamed.
I think they did. This wouldn't have happened if it wern't for the bug in their software. Sure, some celver hacker wrote the worm to exploit it, but it's microsoft's bug. If I run over your dog, and it was due to my negligence, you still get to say "hey that guy ran over my dog". By the same logic, "hey microsoft's fuckup allowed govt servers to fall victim to one of the biggest dd0s attacks ever!".
And I think it is one of the biggest, because previous dd0s worms/viruses have targeted cable modem and home users while this targets webservers, which are likely to be more high powered machines on fast connections.
christ! The breaking-and-entering bullshit is bad enough, you don't need to bring timber-harvest into this as well. The fact that ebooks could potentially be saving trees (hey, they aren't on paper!) just makes this WAY too complicated.
No silly analogies are needed: Writing a peice of software that decrypts books simply should not be a crime!
I'm inclined to wonder if this program will become another DeCSS-like item... ie songs and haiku's that secretly contain the source might start popping up.;-)
to the 50 or so people that have explained what "31337 h4x0r" means....
That message is encoded using "h 4 x 0 r - 5 p 3 4 |<" technology, which is a trademark (tm) of RSA Labs, Inc. Decoding the message is a violation of the DMCA and you will be prosecuted accordingly. Explaining the encoding scheme is another crime in and of itself, and charges will be filed regarding that act as well.
Incedentally, this message is encoded in ROT-26 and any attempt to decrypt it will also be investigated.
No, you are missing the point. No matter what, these "breaking into my house" stories will never be relavent to an IP discussion because stealing my stero and stealing a copy of an electronic book are two entirely different acts.
If there is a giant print of a painting, and I take a photo of it while traveling, I just made a duplication. A poor one, sure. But its still a duplication. So is pushing the shutter button on a camera remotely simmilar to breaking into your house?
If you say it is, I'm going to break into your house and take pictures of what I do to you and your family. (j/k guys... calm down!)
I've tried bearshare too but I like limewire better. The file-grouping is cool. The fact that its the same program on every machine I use it on (mac/windows/linux) is cool. And when I tried it bearshare wasn't too stable.
And users discriminating based on client software? Well, if I'm connected to a few thousand hosts anyway and getting hits back on every search I don't really mind.
Thanks for clarifying that. People toss around 'xDSL' like its another variant aside from aDSL and sDSL..
Personally, I have aDSL and my downstream is great (I can download from most fast sites at 200k/sec). My upstream, however, is capped right around 13k/sec (i mean kbytes) which I find annoying. Still, I'm happy because its cheap and it very rarely goes down.
(i have a pacbell line and service from sonic.net)
I'm sure that while his upsteam is sending more packets, the flood of http GET requests pouring through his downstream connection slows things down a bit.;-)
I think that they got this far because they don't enforce the liscense as much as they could. Sure, if you run Linux and burn MP3's, its likely you are breaking the law. But is anyone going to stop you? No. Hence, from joe linux user's point of view, it makes no difference what the law is. It was probably ilegal to download the file in the first place; burning it is just one more silly law to break.
And ogg vorbis? With a name that rolls off the tounge like that, I'm sure it'll be a household name in no time. "Hey mommy I want an ogg vorbis player for xmas?" Riight.
LimeWire might seem a little like the old napster, but its actually much better/different. Its gnutella, and its cooler than napster. Which isn't saying much, because with shit like ".nap" napster isn't too cool.
Under normal circumstances the authorities cannot detain citizens without arresting them, since doing so is paramount to an arrest.
I wish! You can be held for "questioning" for a reasonably long time on no charges at all. In fact, they don't even have to tell you why. At least thats what happened to me, and from checking around a little I got standard treatment.

Why should programmers risk their own money on the success of a product? Thats what the venture capatalists are for!

Since that information is every email sent, why bother writing a program to gather it? Glancing at the email headers should do the trick. ;-)

He didn't say the emporer has no clothes. He said he has some really flimsy cheap clothes, and here is a program that will remove them.
Now it sounds like this guy molests important people and removes their colthing!
These "emporer's clothes" and "breaking & entering" analogies are getting out of hand.
