  1. Moral Issue on On Call and Underpaid in IT/IS? · · Score: 2

In the spirit of the GNU open source work for no pay ideals, you should really not ask for any pay at all. Instead, collect "donations" from individuals who benefit from the network you maintain!

  2. Re:For their own on Apple Threatens Open Source Theme Project · · Score: 3

Apple has had a modular 'theme' system built into the macos since around system 8.1 (maybe 8.5?) and has never released or even mentioned a theme editor or any themes. In fact, there is only one legit theme file (platinum), so the 'theme' menu in the appearance control panel has only one item in it. All of the themes you can download are unofficial and unsupported, and now I guess they are trying to put a stop to them. You have to wonder why apple wrote in their theme system at all... it has been there for a long time and they have never made any use of it.

Though I enjoyed TNG very much, I'll respect your opinion of it. But saying TOS was better? You're not serious, are you?

Watching old TOS episodes on scifi chanel is quite entertaining, the same way watching mystery science theatre on scifi is entertaining. In fact, the two should really be combined.

  6. Re:Depends on how good you are on Fair Compensation For Non-Compete Clauses? · · Score: 1

Also, it should only if you are trying to work in the same industry. Microsoft is trying to blanket theirs i guess, because they work in so many parts of the hitech industry, but most companies don't compete with all or even most your potential future employers.

  7. Re:Fuck 'em. on Fair Compensation For Non-Compete Clauses? · · Score: 1

i believe some startup got sued because a large portion of their staff used to work at microsoft and had signed non-compete agreements. They had to lay off a third of their staff, or fight M$ in court. It was on slashdot a while back. So, yes. People are forced out of jobs

  8. God's Will on More Evidence For An Extinction Comet · · Score: 2

The important thing to remember is that, like all disasters, extinction level events are the will of god. Ditto for that bit earlier today about evolution. Sure, it doesnt make sense, but I've been assured that everything is gods will. Really! I swear!

the best part here is some people are going to take me seriously!

  9. Pay WHO? on Napster Offers $1B For Music-Swapping Rights · · Score: 2

It would be entirely impossible to pay all the right parties. This is a half assed attempt to make something kosher. That would be like me paying microsoft and adobe for the right to pirate commercial software. They say they'll pay 'independent labels', but how do they know EVERY ONE? If I burn cds of my [hypothetical] band and sell them at [equally hypotheical] shows, and then someone pirates my music on napster, will they pay ME? I don't think so. And in fact, the membership fees that people would be paying while pirating MY MUSIC would be going to the big record companies. So, this brilliant bussiness model we've waited so long for napster to tell us about gives the big record companies the better bargin. Fuck that.

  11. sonic.net on The Extinction Of The Mom & Pop ISP Service? · · Score: 1

Since nobody else has yet, I feel obligated to plug sonic.net, my favorite local ISP. They've grown to provide service to much of northern california now, but still have the charm of a local. They've got great support, cool website member tools, and a well-stocked shell. They're also crazy fast. I'm quite pleased.

  16. Re:Nut on Macs In Space II · · Score: 1

People have been saying apple was going to die since 1980, and it hasn't happened yet. And everytime something bad happens at apple, and all the 'apples gonna die' people say THIS IS IT apple turns around and surprises everyone. So I'm not too worried about apple dying right away. If I were the investor in that project, however, I'd be a bit worried about macos stability. Linux-ppc would really probably be a better choice.

  19. BeOS is superior on What Would Happen To Linux If BeOS Were GPL'd? · · Score: 1

I have used the BeOS a great deal, even as my primary OS for a few weeks, and I can say without a doubt that most anyone who has used it saw the potential. If the BeOS had a few more 'killer apps' for it, it could really catch on. People's complaints about its interface being to mac-os are valid, but imagine a gpl'd beos: There would be as many options as X! I would be thirlled to see be get gpl'd. However, it wont happen.

In the 'BeOS Bible' (inclued with BeOS 5 Proffiession Edition) there are interviews with the Be programmers. They are very clear about how their code is rarely documented properly, and that it would be nearly impossible to ever go open source.

  20. Re:Good, but do we want this? [YES!] on NymIP: Anonymity At The IP Layer · · Score: 1

This issue seems to me like it is more a privacy/4th ammendment type issue than a free speech/1st ammendment one. This isn't just about saying things anonymously. This is about being able to retreive information anonymously too. When I'm looking at certain websites at work, I really wish my external IP address didn't resolve to the-name-of-my-company.com. Fortunetly for me, our network uses NAT so I have the same external IP as everyone else in the building. Still, on principal, I wish I didn't have to go through anonymizer to be anonymous.

  21. I dont have a spam problem on UUnet's Case Study, or The Trouble With Spam · · Score: 1

I havn't really minded spam since I setup mail filters to delete all messages that dont have my email address or one of my forwarding accounts in the TO or CC fields, or are sent from a sender on a predefined list of OK mass mailings (ie listservs). Even hotmail has basic mail filtering ability; if everyone setup filters spam would not be profitable. I realize not everyone will setup filters, but as long as I have them for me it isn't a problem anymore!
