Actually there is far more skill involved in putting a nail in the wall than you give it credit. The nail gun does nothing else than push the nail in the wall. It cannot asses if the nail actually did its job or if it was punched in the correct location. That would require a machine that does not yet exist.

Machines do not do well at evaluating conditions. Just a small example is how computers are still unable to translate one language to another successfully. Companies still spend hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to translate documentation from one language to another via translation companies that actually use humans, ASSISTED by translation software.

Machine/computers can only evaluate yes/no conditions that it was programmed to handle. I'm not saying we won't get there but I strongly believe we are very far from it and many social and political changes will occur between now and then.

I've been building dynamic content heavy web applications that scale to any resolution for over 10 years and while I can admit that IE 6 and 7 were GARBAGE I see only minor issues with later versions and have yet to encounter issues with version 10 and 11. In my experience those who have lots of cross browser issues write poor html and css. In my first 2-3 years of making web applications I made many mistakes and learned how to properly use markup and css.

If you have to support old browsers of any making I very much feel for you. Because I am in control of what technology is used it's easier for me to tell customers what the minimum requirements are. I use the following link to determine what I consider reasonable to support. As you can see IE6 and 7 aren't on the list (Thank god). http://gs.statcounter.com/#bro...

Do we really practice the rights we have being part of a democracy? In my opinion the answer is no. We just go about our days and most of us don't really care about politics. Proof of this is the declining election attendance. You'll say it's not that important but what people forget is that it's a right that was acquired through hard work. This is especially true for women and African Americans.

Just like voting, getting involved in political circles is how you make change happen. If you aren't happy with something then you can get involved in local politics or at the least in your local community where you enjoy a better chance of being heard. To act as if one has no power is not exactly how you make change happen.

The common excuse for not participating is the lack of time yet the same people who will throw that argument at me are usually the ones talking about all the current reality shows...

There was no viable options for home users, so home users started buying PCs to do simple things like accounting and word processing. It was just a matter of time before home users would be given another option and Apple was the first one to deliver. Home users don't need the complexity of an operating system, they just want to click and use. In a business we still tailor our software and hardware for specific requirements which is why PCs are still required whether they run Linux, Apple or MS.

I don't see why MS would want to be part of a market with small margins in the first place. Everything they built is for a higher purpose than watching videos and spending hours on facebook.

Those reports also show a large number of friendly fire events. War looks good when we play COD and we see names in red and green but in real life everybody looks like a target when the adrenaline is pumping.

Understandably the big providers are trying to protect their large revenue numbers and charge for the fairly expensive infrastructure they have put in place. I don't believe providers should be allowed to ask the content providers to pay for their infrastructure. Instead I believe usage of the infrastructure by users should pay for the ongoing requirement to upgrade and innovate. This would also provide incentives for ISPs to better their infrastructures by implementing peering as it would be money in the bank. Currently the ISPs are acting like a government and just taxing everybody which doesn't promote advances in the infrastructure.

Obviously everybody on /. is against bandwidth metering with BS arguments such as bandwidth abuse and lost of incentive to grow the systems in place. At the end of the day the users will end up paying for the extra cost whether it's through bandwidth metering or fix cost you can't understand. At least with metering you can control the cost just like you do with water and electricity.

Those aren't answers. You're just throwing back the hot potato to the authorities without an actual solution. You aren't solving anything by saying they aren't screening well enough. That's not a solution, it's a hypothesis which hasn't been validated by yourself or any other outsider. A problem is present and that's obvious. What is the solution aside what they already do? At the end of the day these calls are of critical nature and cannot be ignored to allow for a long investigation. A bomb can kill thousands and a bad swat call "MAY" kill someone 1 in 10000 cases. This number was pulled from factual information posted online about the US swat situation. 5 deaths resulting from a total of 50 000 swat raids. The issue here isn't the emergency services themselves but rather that police services have decided that even low level crimes require swat raids. That issue is completely aside the original comment of screening calls.

At the end of the day a serious threat called in will be handled as a serious threat. You don't send a local police dispatch to go verify if the threat is real as that would pose a danger to them and they don't necessarily have the competence. The course of action is for the police to evacuate all citizens from the premise so that the experts can validate the threat.

On the flip side, the glasses DO NOT solve the enormous amount of data coming to us daily through our smart phone. Instead I believe those who manage to pay attention to the device based on priorities will be more efficient. I use a Windows phone and at a glance I know if I have facebook notifications, emails in 3 different accounts, twitter and items due today. I only get sound notifications for inbound calls, missed calls and meeting notifications. I have developed the habit of looking at my phone every 30 - 60 minutes. While I'm at work I'll only look at critical items which include todo list and emails. After hours I may have a minute to kill so I'll look at facebook or other lesser important notifications I have.

When you do intellectual work having a notifications popup randomly takes you out of "the zone". I'd rather be disciplined into check regularly when I'm not "in the zone".

I think the glasses are very nice for taking pictures, providing directions while driving and providing the WHO IS CALLING notification. My arguments above don't contradict the usefulness of glasses but instead shows the need to decide what information gets to invade your eyes. Currently none of the eye wear devices offer in depth configuration either due to lagging software or lack of integration with smart phones.

    My 2 cents.
