  1. so this is a problem? on What's the Problem With US High Schools? · · Score: 1

I don't see what the problem is here. People are sorting themselves. The GOOD thing is that some of those that do not want the education are leaving school rather than staying and causeing problems.

"No person left behind" is a flawed system. As we see from the dropout rate, many people want to be left behind. At least these people are making the decision. Unfortunately, many people don't make the choice to leave school and their class turns into a babysitting session and even the kids who want to learn, can't lean.

The biggest problem is that we spend more per child in the inner cities where there are more classes with babysitters, and they are the most expensive babysitter

  3. But what really caused it is... on NASA Announces Record Ozone Hole · · Score: 1

I have seen the articles about the ozone hole. As usual there is an explanation.

In most articles I have read, you need to read down to the last paragraph to see that the size of the ozone hole varies with themperature and that the temp in August at the South Pole was 9 degrees cooler than average, and that cool weather increases the size of the ozone hole. So much for global warming, Al! Perhaps what we call global warming is a change in tilt of the earth?

But before we even think about what causes it, we need to put this in historical perspecive. We have been measuring the size of the ozone hole for about 10 years. This is not enough time to judge any trend, and they do find that the size varies from year to year...it is NOT increasing every year. We don't have a baseline on how big the hole was 100 years ago before we had a fridge in every house, so for now, these measurments are simply a curiosity and filler for the papers.

What causes the ozone? Sunlight hits the atmosphere and ionizes it. When you are at a pole in the winter there is almost a 24 hour night. No sun, no ionization.

They say that the reason we need a layer of ozone is to protect us from the ultra-violet light that causes skin cancer. Of course at the South Pole in August since there is no sun, we need no protection! Good engineering design if you ask me.

Can anyone tell me who was burning fossel fuels between the year 850 and 1300 when the earth last experienced "global warming" or why from 1300 to sometime around 1800 we experienced global cooling in what scientists called a "mini ice-age"?

Companies don't want to do development here, so why should I be a developer?

I do not mean to sound bitter. There is no law saying that there has to be a tech job for me or anyone. If those positions pay too little or are done in other countries, you are not going to get tech grads in MA.

I vote no on a mail account that gets all email sent to the domain. I host a bunch of domains. When I started in '96, this was not a problem. Unfortunately, times have changed!

About a month ago three of the domains I host started getting LOTS of email. examination of the email showed that I was getting over 50K messages addressed to random names.

50K messages is a lot for me. A year ago I received 25K/week, and 60% were marked as spam by spamassassin.

Back to this year...Since no more than 25 of the current spam comes from the same host, they are impossible to block. That means somthing like more than 2000 comprimised machines sending spam!

I use Qmail...great software, but unfortunately it accepts the email before verifying that it can be delivered...then generates a bounce message. 25K bounce messages in the queue ties up a machine! At the moment, for those domains, I put all the email to bad accounts into the bit bucket. I will fix this next week.

Spam is expensive. I offer email free because it did not used to cost anything, but times have changed. We are talking somthing like 500MB/day...thats 15 gigs a month! Bandwidth cost money.

Filtering for virii and spam cost resources. 18 months ago 80 domains ran fine on a 200MHZ machine with 128MB ram. This month I replace that machine for the second time with a 2.5Ghz machine and 1 Gig of ram.

Unfortunately what is needed is for the ISP at one or more of these spam hosts to snif the traffic to the machine so we can find the source...this is not likely to happen!

These three domains have only 2 or 3 valid users each!

    Any suggestions?
