  1. Time for Freedom of Speech act on Australian Labor Party Proposes ISP Level Filter · · Score: 1

It is time Australia passed a law allowing freedom of speech! That is something worth campaigning for, and something the Labor government could be doing to get real political support.

At the moment the Labor and Liberal party just seem to be squabbling over who is more conservative.

It is time the went back to their roots. it is time they got the support of the socialists again - who currently have no true choice - unless they want to go green....but that also has social consequences not in line with socialism.

If Gogh Whitlam were still in charge, Australia would be much more progressive, and mindless dribble like this would not make australia look like a backwards militant regime.

I personally would like to see this kind of development become part of FreeBSD, and keep everything together and fully integrated. That I believe is one of FreeBSD's greatest strengths.

  5. its and it's on Hackers, Spelling, and Grammar? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've almost gotten to the point where I consider a phrase like "makes its own gravy" to be written wrong because of the missing apostrophe, because it's so common -- even in advertising copy, for pete's sake.

    its is correct.

    reference: http://dictionary.reference.com/help/faq/language/ i/its.html

    Q. What is the difference between its and it's?

    A. Its is the possessive form of it.
It's is a contraction of it is or it has.

    Examples:

    It's a common mistake.
The boat has a hole in its hull.

The confusion arises from the dual function of the 's ending, which can indicate either possession or contraction, as in: Joe's hamburgers are the best (="The hamburgers which are Joe's -- that is, in that he makes them -- are the best"); Joe's going to have to buy some more patties soon (="Joe is going to have to buy some more patties soon"). However, 's is never used to indicate possession in pronouns. We do not write hi's (instead of his), for example.

Here is a test we can perform to determine whether to use it's or its: Replace it with his and see if the sentence still makes (grammatical) sense. His a common mistake does not make sense. The boat has a hole in his hull does make sense -- at least grammatically; of course boats are not boys, but we can pretend that they are for the sake of improving our spelling. The rule we shall apply, then, is this: If the sentence makes sense with his, which does not have an apostrophe, it is safe to replace it with its, which also does not have an apostrophe.

Likewise there is also no 1st amendment. Most people think it a right (which it should be), but there is no actual legal protection in Australia.

It's also possible that perhaps Linux isn't really ready for the mainstream desktop. I personally have a hard time picturing my mom installing and maintaining Linux on her home computer.

That statement is all well and good, but how often does your mom maintain windows? Has she ever had to install windows or anything like that? Most of the people in this category find someone else to do that kind of thing when something goes wrong. They don't even care what OS they are running just as long as they know what buttons to click to get to internet, email, word, and solitaire, and as long as there is someone around to fix things when there is a problem, or to set up a new ISP connection. Most Windows boxes have everything preinstalled, and they never get updated, ever. We could do the same thing with Linux, BSD or whatever platform we choose. Find a stable version where everything works nicely, and install it on our parents computers. Put the buttons in plain view, and they will be happy to keep on computing like they always have. It never needs to be updated (of course it would be nice...) and will probably still be running fine 5 years down the track without so much as even crashing once :)

  21. the poor artists on Legal US Music Downloads Beat CD Single Sales · · Score: 3, Insightful

It is good that people are now paying for the music they download, but a lot of people don't understand that the artists get very little of this money. Generally a band will only get 10% - $1 for the entire album downloaded, whereas the record company gets $9 for each album downloaded.

In the CD world, 10% ($2) was a good deal for the band because the record companies had to pay for manufacturing, cases, booklets, shipping and publicity, which is quite costly. But now they don't have to do anything - it is pure profit for the record companies, so they should be passing on a higher percentage of the profit to the bands.

Until They change how much the bands get payed for digital downloads I will stick to buying CDs. Plus I like getting booklets :)

In what way is it infringing?

the .doc format is now an open xml format (with optional digital signing if you want the security), so any wordprocessor can have the ability to import a .doc file (the xml kind).

Microsofts reasoning behind this move: If .doc becomes the standard format for all documents (on all wordprocessors, despite their OS), then Microsoft Word by default becomes the defacto standard for all documents.

The question then becomes, who will be able to outdo Microsoft in working with the .doc format given they have a 10 year head start?
