Considering Macintosh OS 9.X doesn't even support Java 1.2 yet (they are working on it), I think FreeBSD are doing okay.
The sources have been there a long time - it's just a rubber stamp approving a precompiled version. Besides which, what BSD user out there really cares about having to compile source files themselves? It's as easy as typing in "make":)
Slide 15 shows purports to show "Obfuscated Copying" from Unix System V into Linux. SCO further obfuscated the code on this slide by switching it to a Greek font, but that was easily undone. It's entertaining that the SCO folks had no clue that the font-change could be so easily reversed. I'm glad they don't work on my computer security:-)
When will people learn!!! If you truly want to obfuscate code you need to put it into an elvish font with a small print underneath asking viewers to please not change the font:)
Lovsan is a proprietry product of SCO. All users who are running Lovsan on their computers without a lisense will face charges of $5,000. Lisensing fees start at $699 for home users.
This idea isn't really well thought out (and not a flame), but just take a second glance for a moment. What if IBM put SCO up to this? This is a lose lose situation for SCO. Is anyone really stupid enough to go against IBM with such stupid claims? Maybe this is being choreographed by IBM to reinforce the GPL and their own place in the market. What then are the kickbacks to SCO? It will certainly even out the playing field between MS Windows an Linux a little more, and IBM would love to do that, the money will be in the hardware again, rather than the software. I just think there has to be more to it than can be seen at the superficial level. Really can anyone be so stupid? Maybe they are........
And please tell me what is helpful about a chart written for a product I do not own? This is the internet people! What is so hard about creating a simple table using um....tables? You can view them for free!
I would like to know if there will be a BSD presence at linux.conf.au in Adelaide, Australia in January.
I am attending to hopefully give a talk, non-OS related, and it would be good if there is a larger group of BSDers there to hang out with, perhaps run a BOF or three in the afternoons, or during long breaks.....just to give us a chance to relax a bit more and discuss more important matters - you know all those great bikeshed ideas:p
I used LyX to write out my masters dissertation a year ago. I did have to learn a couple of Latex codes for a few little changes I wanted to make, using ERT. I couldn't imagine using anything else these days.
Audio is always put down near the bottom of the list in most applications, usually just a few pegs above MIDI which is always one of the lowest ranking features to improve or add to a program (unless you are talking about Cubase/Logic Audio etc). One reason for this is that our ears are not as sensitive as our eyes. Most people cannot discern between a high quality sound and a really high quality sound, our ears just don't need to be that precise. There are some of us though who train our ears to hear such discrepencies. We are the ones for whom the high end sound cards are made for, because for some it does make a difference. Especially when your PhD involves studying discrete particles of sound.....So you take your mb sound cards and play your games, I have some serious high quality audio to analyse:)
These drivers are a major improvement, no more do I have to hit ctrl-alt-backspace when they misload (or whatever it is they did before). No fiddling, just went through the basic install procedure and well - I am much happier:)
My playlist and add file screens on XINE are still messed up though (very hard to read) I don't even know if it gfx card related - any thoughts?
About every second time I reboot my computer the xdm login screen is all messed up. I have to hit ctlr-alt-backspace to reinit x, so that the drivers kick in properly. If I don't it locks up the computer during the login sequence. It is the same for both my 4.8 and 5.0 machine.
All people involved in the overtime without pay should strike. All other people who agree with them from the company should also strike. If you are in a union you should already have talked to your union rep, they would organise everyone in the union to rally behind you. They would also negotiate an overtime pay rate for you with the employers.
These problems were all solved decades ago, but everyone has forgotten about how important these changes were and what it took to get them changed. It took many people who banded together through thick and thin, life and death, becoming unionised to help everyone together instead of everyone being picked on individually.
If we forget the past as we move towards the future we will have to learn the same lesson again and again, and it is not an easy lesson to teach those in power.
no matter how dumb it is for you to own the stock, someone dumber will buy it off you for more.
:)
That is well and good until you realize you were the dumbass who shouldn't have bought stock which now no one wants to buy
You go Lorraine!!!!!
:)
Round those other girls up, Paula, Fat Agnus, you know the whole gang and lets show the computer world who the best girl in town is
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, DragonflyBSD and Darwin are all open source. They are so open that anyone can use their sourcecode for absolutely anything.
:)
BSD/OS is (was) the closed source BSD.
Hopefully it will mean a few more people to help with the opensource projects
Isn't that how life was started on earth? :)
Dru Lavigne writes so many really useful articles. Has she got a book on the way?

One of my friends is a developer for jMusic. Whilst I have never used it personally, I have seen some fantastic musical tools he has produced with it.
Dave Phillips' Linux Sound was an excellent read. I am glad to see him keeping everything up to date.

If you are starting over then get it right from the beginning.
:)
It is GNU/Linux

They are only $20 each? I have $60, I will buy all three!!!!!!

The site www.msbetas.net is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000.
And you all though it was running on the advertised super slim win95.....Leave giants like Contiki to host web sites!
Should we send them an award for the fastest slashdot time on record?
An elf maid unable to read elvish? Oh dear!
:)
You could always use babel fish
Being able to write love poems using the Elvish script will really give me the edge in attracting a female companion!
:)
Thanks slashdot
They've even created a helpful chart
And please tell me what is helpful about a chart written for a product I do not own? This is the internet people! What is so hard about creating a simple table using um....tables? You can view them for free!
e.g. "basisrecheneinheit" for "butterfly"
:)
I always use the word Schmetterling for Butterfly - it is still longer, but not as long.
And regarding the term E-mail - my german girlfriend sends me Bambi's not emails
I can't remember where she got the term from - she explained it once......

Like all other intelligent life forms, it was just trying to attain freedom!

I asked my girlfriend what she thought and all I got was a blank stare. I offered to decipher it, but she declined on technical grounds.
