first, i'm really not trying to slight you or your research in any manner. my questions are because i am curious. i will also state that it is not too hard for me to believe that macintosh can beat the windows/intel combination in many applications.

what OS / version were the systems running? especially to slashdotters, people are interested to see how linux stacks up against other operating systems. to mac enthusiasts, it seems more important to match up against windows as if it is the only platform. (given, it has the larger install base by far, and thus it is probably more practical to make that comparison)

also, if this was run anytime recently (used the june 2000 software for benchmarks, page last updated april 2001), why is the intel hardware noticeably older than the mac?

the g4 450 was not introduced until late 1999 and was the second fastest mac in 2000, second only to the g4 500. the pentium iii was running at 733 by the end of 1999 and was up to 1000 (and 866/850) by the end of Q1 2000.

i understand that the benchmarks were probably run on the equipment available, but i don't think it is completely fair to run new epuipment against old(er) equipment.

i don't want to argue with what the article claims, but the whole thing reads like a paid advertisement for apple. (not an apple slam - an observation about the article.) but i suppose news includes editorials.

The article contains 5 instances of the phrase "dauger said" and doesn't seem to have any other sources. dauger is a guy looking "to commercialize his expertise in Macintosh cluster computing." should we be surprised about his bias? does the existence of a 1 page .pdf explaining osX clustering preclude anyone from writing a 230 page book entitled, "how to build a better mac osX cluster"? i think not.

i guess when stories are low, advertising gets cheaper. it would be nice to see some bench marks instead of just claimed superiority of a specific machine/configuration over a generals class of machines/configurations.

now imagine a beowulf cluster of complaints like this. sorry, couldn't resist

at the time of my attempted installation, i had limited access to the internet (internet access not available on the system i was installing). so i was limited to what i could find in the manual. maybe i was too lazy to read the whole thing, but i did make an attempt to find a 'what to do if x does not work' section. i hadn't had trouble with x before, so this was a new area of exploration to me. if you can tell me what chapter it's in, that would help me. right now i have a retail copy of mandrake 8.1 that is sitting idle in my closet. making it useful would make me happy.

another problem i had was tring to get mandrake to recognize my gainward gf3 vid card. i could add a new piece of hardware with harddrake, but it still listed an unknown device geforce3 that i couldn't figure out how to make it configure.

my deepest apologies. what i wrote i percieved to be true through my experience.

and my favorite part is that all of their manuals assume that x will run with the default install settings. all of the trouble shooting tips involve clicking a button on the desktop. so that's all pretty useless when all you have is a command prompt. i was lucky that when i tried to install 8.1, i was not afraid to do a lot of tweaking to the xf86config and hardware settings. then mandrake would attempt to "fix" my changes. so now there is no more mandrake for me. whether it works that way is yet to be determined, but it is like the opposite of intel's plan. the yamhill going to make 32 bit processors that can be switched to 64. the hammer starts out 64, but can also run 32 side by side.

it seems that even if the yamhill does release it's 64-bit fury, intel is still stuck playing catch up to amd. intel says they won't release yamhill unless the hammer forces them to. by that time amd will already have aquired market share.

as long as the os supports 32 as well as 64-bit apps like the processor does, people should be able to run whatever they want. if there is an advantage to 64-bits, vendors will have incentive to switch. if not, vendors will still have the flexibility to migrate at their own pace.

take Be. they made BeOS, which people still use even though it is dead. microsoft crushed it as it was just getting off the ground. they didn't just out-design Be, they told their vendors that they were not allowed to sell computers that did not also contain windows. microsoft also required them to diable BeOS by default. i fail to see how that makes windows a superior product. maybe it didn't have all of the features of windows, but operating systems to take time to develop. if they are stamped out in their infancy all of the innovation they might have had is lost. things like this also serve as a warning to others who would enter microsoft's turf. apple and the smorgasbord of *nixes survive because they are in different markets.

ants make sense if you consider the file you are searching for to be the food. the food can be in many different places with many paths to each one. in a large file (think feature-length movie), packets would be sent all sorts of different directions over a period of time. ants could concievably be used to make the transfer more efficient the longer it is. for instant messaging, paths are found between the same 2 points for the duration of the conversation. if you have a 'buddy list' those buddies usually exist at the same ip address. more efficient routes could be found even after the conversation ended.

Comments about America inflicting itself can only be taken seriously to a point. Yes, many American companies are "invading" other countries. But the people there buy it. No one is forced to buy food at McDonalds or drink Coca-Cola. The same thing happens in the US. Businesses I previously patroned are dissappearing and being replaced by things like Starbucks and Blockbuster. I say the same thing applies here as anywhere else. If you don't like a business, don't give it your money. If you don't like Hollywood being "imposed" on your country, don't see any Hollywood films. Encourage others to do the same. In the end, the people get what they want. If they want Americanization, it will certainly find them. It is easier to blame America than it is to blame the people who let our evil nation "invade" yours.

I would also like to point out that every world power has been viewed negatively by the less powerfull. Before America it was the European Powers. It is always easy to tell America what to do when you only have to consider the consequences outside of America. If you are not American, you will not understand how the consequences will affect us.
