I agree, and here's some more good names: Konqueror - those krazy KDE folKs. Blender - about as descriptive as moonlight. Mozilla - I don't understand this one at all.
And some closed-source weird names: Excel - Maybe a spreadsheet has X number of cells? Visio - almost as weird as Mozilla Visual Studio...sounds like a paint program.
I think its all about what sounds good. For instance, my name is John, which is not as descriptive as "Overweight geek" but definitely sounds better.
Its been a great way for me to learn the ins and outs of Linux. I still don't know everything but I'm much more comfortable setting everything up. And the #LFS channel on irc.linuxfromscratch.org is very helpful.
As an aside, try using Slackware 8.1 for your base distro. Its got a pretty small footprint but it still has everything you need.
> BOINC, in essence, is "a new layer of software" that separates the different components of the SETI@home program. It will allow changes to be installed without interrupting the screensaver or asking the user to download upgrades.
Hopefully this will be an option, and not a requirement.
Windows: Google for SETI Driver. It lets you download many work units at once, and keeps your SETI client (command-line) running. And its just a click away in the systray. You can also change SETI's priority (low, normal, high).
Linux: I've been using KSetiWatch, which has been working great, and it integrates into KDE's panel with a progress meter.
I've tried out VNC before, but I thought it was slower than Windows Terminal Services client/RDP. Now that I've been using Linux I like using X11 over SSH while I'm at work/school. Has the new version made VNC faster? I have one last Windows box that would be nice to administer remotely.
I'd like a Linux-only CD with the option of downloading a Windows client too. That way I can to go Electronics Boutique and buy Linux software. Wouldn't it be better for it to count as a Linux sale?
I'd like to alert Epic of my support for Linux UT 2003, but I can't find any email addresses except support on their page. Who do we talk to? On the other hand, maybe they don't want to be bombarded by those crazy Linux weirdos.
"The buddyscript suite of tools is the best that's available. We're confident they are the best choice (for users) who are building interactive agents. The subject of enforcing the patent shouldn't even come up. Anyone wanting to build a very good interactive agent will find that our tools are the very best," Kay added.
Sounds like he knows he'll be taking a lot of flak for this patent. And "[you'll] find that our tools are the very best."... geez, how about throwing that patent away so that other people can try to make a competing product and let the *users* decide instead of Mr. Kay

(The fastest, to me, was RDP)
